It is the same unit, with the same model numbers, the same manufacturer spec sheet, the same warranty and the same factories. What changed is the company’s name: Fujitsu General Limited became GENERAL Inc. on January 1, 2026.

This one-ton size answers a common situation: a bungalow or a condo that already has a duct system, with an electric furnace that has done its time in the basement or a mechanical closet. It still heats, only with its elements, and it does not cool. In summer, people fall back on window air conditioners.

Our approach comes down to a few steps. If the ducts are in good shape, we keep them. We remove the furnace, install a compact multi-position air handler in its place, set the outdoor unit, and the house switches to a central heat pump that heats and cools through the same registers. The electric backup heat stays, but it now lives inside the air handler, which controls it on its own.

GENERAL or Fujitsu AIRSTAGE: the same machine

The name change follows an acquisition: Paloma Rheem Holdings, the group behind Rheem since 1988, bought Fujitsu General in August 2025, and the company has been called GENERAL Inc. since January 1, 2026. Head office and R&D centre still in Kawasaki, Japan, same factories: the AIRSTAGE range keeps its model numbers and its warranty program. On the distribution side, nothing changes for you: Rheem Canada has managed Canadian sales since February 2026, and our orders still go through Groupe Master. The Fujitsu brand is being phased out gradually; until the transition is over, the same unit carries one name or the other.

So we publish both product pages, and the table Inside, the AMUH12KUAS air handler pushes air through the duct system to the registers, then draws it back through the return air. Its cabinet measures 17.5 × 21 × 43 in. (width, depth, height); in many basements it fits in the space the furnace leaves behind and connects to the existing plenum or to a rebuilt one, which we confirm during the visit. It mounts upflow, downflow (UTD-DFMSB1 kit required) or horizontal, left or right: in a condo ceiling, a horizontal installation often gives the cleanest connection.

Let’s be straight about heating. The outdoor unit heats down to −21 °C according to the manufacturer’s operating range, and the brochure states that it does not shut off at low temperatures. The spec sheet gives 10,600 BTU with a COP of 1.36 at the −8 °C test point, and 16,100 BTU with a COP of 2.06 at the −15 °C test point. These figures do not come from the same test conditions: read them as they are. At the 8.3 °C rating point, heating capacity is 16,000 BTU, over a range of 3,400 to 17,800 BTU. For the series, the manufacturer claims up to 33% higher rated heating capacity than nominal capacity.

One ton is still a small system. On the coldest January nights, a house can call for more than the outdoor unit delivers. That is where this system differs from a heat pump added next to a furnace: the air handler offers several backup heat logics and controls the manufacturer’s compatible electric kit itself. The kit is sold separately and needs its own power supply; during the visit, we check what your electrical panel allows. The built-in input/output terminals also accept a fire alarm, a door switch, a humidifier or an HRV/ERV.

On efficiency, the system posts a SEER2 of 19.9, an HSPF2 of 10.3 and an EER2 of 13.0, under AHRI certificate 217290592, and it is ENERGY STAR certified in the cold climate category (ID 4428945). In cooling, the nominal 12,000 BTU sits within a range of 3,100 to 13,600 BTU: on mild days, the compressor slows down instead of starting and stopping over and over. Dehumidification reaches 1.29 pints per hour, a real asset in a damp basement in July.

Now, noise. The air handler goes down to 30 dB(A) at its lowest and up to 42 dB(A) at its highest; when the mechanical closet opens onto the bedroom hallway, those numbers matter. The outdoor unit is rated at 49.0 dB(A). In a condo, its location (balcony, terrace or roof) is settled with the condo board before the order.

Maximum airflow is 500 CFM, and the air handler accepts an external static pressure of 0.08 to 0.80 in. In a condo, a KAGAMI UTY-RVRU or UTY-RNRUZ5 wired controller on the hallway wall does the job; others prefer Wi-Fi through the AIRSTAGE Mobile app. The IR receiver kit with remote, the UTY-TTRXZ1 interface for a third-party 24 V thermostat, and BACnet and Modbus round out the options.

Maintenance stays simple: the filter is checked and changed through the access panel, and a 16 × 20 in. filter base is available as an option. The built-in leak detection system watches over the refrigerant circuit, and compatible controllers give access to service monitoring.

The Hydro-Québec LogisVert grant for this system is $1,272 according to the October 27, 2026 list. Fujitsu General passed in August 2025 into the hands of Paloma Rheem Holdings, the group that has held Rheem since 1988; on January 1, 2026, the name GENERAL Inc. replaced the old one. Kawasaki, Japan, remains the head office and the home of the R&D centre, the factories keep producing, and the AIRSTAGE products keep their model numbers as well as their warranty program. The GENERAL brand itself is nothing new: it has been used since 1946 by a company founded in 1936, which in 2026 marks the 90th anniversary of its founding.

While the Fujitsu brand fades out gradually, the same machine is sold under both names. The outdoor unit picks up or rejects heat, the air handler distributes it through the duct system, and a refrigerant line connects the two. In a townhouse, treated air leaves the service void toward the registers in each room, then comes back through the return air to the air handler’s plenum. Lying down, the 17.5 × 21 × 43 in. cabinet (width, depth, height) takes its 43 in. height horizontally; the clearance it needs depends on which side it rests on, and we measure it on site, counting room to work and to reach the filter.

If the crawl space turns out to be too low or too damp, the unit is not ruled out. It also mounts upflow in a closet, or downflow with the UTD-DFMSB1 kit. Better to change positions than force an installation that will complicate every service call.

In the horizontal position, a few points need special attention, and we settle them before installation:

the condensate drain, which must flow freely from the unit lying on its side;

an access panel that truly gives access to the filter and the service panels;

the duct layout around joists and party walls;

the path of the refrigerant line, cable and drain to the outdoor unit.

Maximum airflow reaches 600 CFM, and the air handler accepts an external static pressure of 0.08 to 0.80 in. WC. That range shows how hard the blower can push through ducts that work around the structure; we measure existing ducts before reusing them, and the number of registers is decided during the visit.

On efficiency, the manufacturer’s spec sheet shows a SEER2 of 19.2, an HSPF2 of 10.5 and an EER2 of 12.2, under AHRI certificate 217290593. The system is ENERGY STAR certified, cold climate category (ID 4428946). Nominal cooling capacity is 18,000 BTU, modulated from 3,100 to 20,100 BTU by the Inverter compressor; in heating, the rated value is 21,600 BTU at 8.3 °C, over a range of 3,100 to 24,000 BTU. Dehumidification is 2.37 pints per hour.

For winter, the manufacturer publishes two measurements from test conditions that cannot be compared: at −8 °C, 16,100 BTU and a COP of 2.91; at −15 °C, 17,300 BTU and a COP of 2.4. The R-32 outdoor unit keeps heating down to −21 °C according to the manufacturer’s range, with no low-temperature shutdown according to the brochure. Beyond what the heat pump delivers, the air handler calls on backup heat through one of its built-in logics, with the manufacturer’s compatible electric kit, sold separately and fed by its own circuit.

Noise is mostly managed outside. Under the floor, the air handler runs at 33 dB(A) at its lowest and 44 dB(A) at its highest. The outdoor unit is rated at 55.0 dB(A), and in a row of houses the neighbour is never far: we choose the location of the pad or bracket with their patio and windows in mind as much as yours.

Between the two units, the allowed refrigerant line runs from 16 ft (5 m) to 98 ft (30 m), the precharge covers the first 66 ft (20 m), and the height difference must not exceed 49 ft (15 m). The AOUH24KUAS1 outdoor unit, with its Inverter compressor and its low global-warming-potential R-32 refrigerant, extracts heat from the outdoor air; the refrigerant line carries it to the AMUH24KUAS air handler, which distributes it through your existing ducts. The air coming out of the registers is less hot than a furnace’s, but it circulates longer and more evenly.

The manufacturer’s heating values, as they appear on the spec sheet:

rated capacity of 27,000 BTU at 8.3 °C, over a range of 5,400 to 32,000 BTU;

18,200 BTU and a COP of 2.93 at the −8 °C test point;

24,600 BTU and a COP of 2.14 at the −15 °C test point;

heating operation down to −21 °C, with no low-temperature shutdown according to the brochure.

The two test points do not rest on the same conditions; we present them as they are, without drawing a comparison. What matters for a cottage: the heat pump carries most of the winter, and electric backup heat takes over when demand exceeds what it delivers. To manage that backup, the air handler has several logics and directly drives the manufacturer’s compatible electric kit; the kit is sold separately and needs a dedicated power supply.

Two tons suit many cottages, not all of them. Floor area, insulation, windows and orientation change the picture, and the series goes beyond 24,000 BTU. We confirm the capacity during the visit rather than from floor area alone.

In summer, the same machine cools: 24,000 BTU nominal, modulated from 5,400 to 28,000 BTU, with dehumidification of 3.08 pints per hour. The upstairs bedrooms, often the warmest in the house, finally get cool air through their own registers. On paper, AHRI certificate 217290594 gives the system a SEER2 of 17.7, an HSPF2 of 10.1 and an EER2 of 11.8; ENERGY STAR places it in the cold climate category under ID 4428948.

A duct system designed for a furnace deserves a check before it takes a heat pump. The air handler delivers a maximum airflow of 750 CFM and accepts an external static pressure of 0.08 to 0.80 in. WC. That margin often lets us place the outdoor unit on the side of the yard where it bothers the least, away from the bedrooms.

For quiet, the air handler goes down to 28 dB(A) at its lowest and up to 42 dB(A) at its highest. The outdoor unit is rated at 54.0 dB(A).

If your furnace fed a humidifier, or if the house has an HRV or ERV, those devices are not left behind: the built-in input/output terminals connect them to the air handler, just like a fire alarm or a door switch. For control, nothing is included; options range from Wi-Fi through the AIRSTAGE Mobile app to the KAGAMI UTY-RVRU and UTY-RNRUZ5 wired controllers, by way of the UTY-TTRXZ1 interface for a third-party 24 V thermostat and the IR receiver kit with remote. BACnet and Modbus also exist, mostly for a managed building.

Routine maintenance happens through the access panel: check and change the filter, with a 16 × 20 in. filter base available as an option. When possible, we keep it away from the bedrooms: the air handler runs at 32 dB(A) at its lowest and 43 dB(A) at its highest, which stays discreet, but a closet right against a bed is never the best choice.

A new duct system has a huge advantage: it is sized for the air handler. The unit delivers up to 1,000 CFM and accepts an external static pressure of 0.2 to 0.8 in. WC. In new construction, that margin leaves you free to put the outdoor unit where it bothers the least, away from bedroom windows and the patio; the outdoor unit is rated at 55.0 dB(A).

The manufacturer’s performance for this system: SEER2 of 19.0, HSPF2 of 10.0 and EER2 of 11.7, under AHRI certificate 217290595, with ENERGY STAR certification in the cold climate category (ID 4428947). In cooling, 30,000 BTU nominal over a range of 9,600 to 35,000 BTU; in heating, 32,000 BTU nominal at 8.3 °C over a range of 9,200 to 38,000 BTU. Dehumidification reaches 3.47 pints per hour, useful in a tightly sealed new house.

In winter, the manufacturer sets the heating operating limit at −21 °C, and its brochure speaks of operation with no low-temperature shutdown. At the test points, you read 22,200 BTU (COP of 2.96) at −8 °C and 29,400 BTU (COP of 2.18) at −15 °C; those two values come from different conditions and are read separately. For cold peaks, backup heat goes through the manufacturer’s compatible electric kit, bought separately, which the air handler manages with the backup mode chosen from those it offers.

A new house often has an HRV or an ERV. Thanks to the built-in input/output terminals, that ventilation unit works in step with the heat pump; that same terminal block also serves a humidifier, a fire alarm, a door switch or backup heat. No control is included: KAGAMI UTY-RVRU or UTY-RNRUZ5 wired controllers, Wi-Fi through the AIRSTAGE Mobile app, a third-party 24 V thermostat through the UTY-TTRXZ1 interface, or the IR receiver kit with wireless remote. The AMUH36KUAS, at 21 × 21 × 48 in. Because it is multi-position, it can also be mounted downflow (UTD-DFMMB1 kit required) or laid horizontal, left or right, when the basement height or a mechanical closet calls for it.

Here, the upper floor is what tests the system: heat rises there in summer, and in winter, warm air has to make it all the way to the bedrooms. The unit delivers up to 1,207 CFM and holds external static pressure anywhere from 0.2 to 0.8 in. WC, which gives a duct system that climbs some headroom. That said, no blower makes up for missing return air upstairs. If your bedrooms have no return grille, we point it out at the visit, where the duct route and the number of grilles are also set.

Then there is the air exchanger. In many homes, the HRV is tied into the furnace ducts and relies on its blower to spread fresh air. When the two devices aren't coordinated, fresh air circulates poorly. The input/output terminals on the AMUH36KUAS are designed to connect third-party equipment:

HRV or ERV: the exchanger and the air handler run in a coordinated way rather than each at its own pace;

backup heat: several backup logics are available, and the manufacturer's electric kits designed for the unit are sold separately and require their own power supply;

humidifier: handy when dry January air sets in;

fire alarm and door switch: two inputs to tie the unit into the home's safety devices.

The exact sequence, which device starts what and in what order, is set at commissioning. The manufacturer's brochure gives 36,000 BTU in cooling, modulated between 9,600 and 39,000 BTU, and 38,000 BTU of rated heating at 8.3 °C, modulated between 9,200 and 43,000 BTU: the Inverter compressor adjusts its output instead of constantly starting and stopping. The manufacturer also puts forward, for the whole series, rated heating that can reach up to 33% above nominal capacity.

In winter, the AOUH36KUAS1 runs down to −21 °C, in heating as in cooling, and according to the brochure, without lockout even in the cold. The certification file gives two separate test points, to be read as they are: at −8 °C, 27,400 BTU and a COP of 2.85; at −15 °C, 32,000 BTU and a COP of 2.18. Below −21 °C, backup heat takes over.

On noise, the air handler goes down to 31 dB(A) at its lowest level and up to 46 dB(A) at maximum; in the basement, it works far from the upstairs bedrooms. Outside, the unit is rated at 56 dB(A) and measures 31 × 12.63 × 37 in.; we avoid placing it under a bedroom window, yours or your neighbour's. The spec sheet also puts dehumidification at 3.82 pints/h, welcome when the upper floor gets sticky in July.

Once the ducts are checked, we install the unit with an access panel for the filter and maintenance. The 3/8 and 5/8 in. refrigerant line, the cable and the drain run to the outdoor unit, set on a base or a bracket. The line can reach 50 m (164 ft), the precharge covers 20 m (66 ft), and you need a minimum of 5 m (16 ft) and a height difference of no more than 30 m (98 ft), which leaves room to choose where the outdoor unit goes. The system needs a dedicated 208/230 V circuit (MCA 25 A, MOP 25 A). Commissioning is entrusted to a refrigeration technician; AirGreen, an HVAC contractor, is an AIRSTAGE Elite Plus installer.

No control comes with the unit, so plan for one. The system comes without a control; here are the options available:

a third-party 24 V thermostat, through the UTY-TTRXZ1 interface;

a KAGAMI UTY-RVRU or UTY-RNRUZ5 wired controller;

the AIRSTAGE Mobile app, over Wi-Fi;

a wireless remote, with the IR receiver kit;

BACnet or Modbus, if the property is tied to a building management system.

A compatible controller also opens the door to service monitoring, handy when a single machine carries the whole house.

Heating the whole house with one system also means planning the backup carefully. The unit can follow several backup logics, and the manufacturer offers compatible electric kits that are bought separately and require a dedicated circuit. The heat pump, for its part, needs its own 208/230 V circuit (MCA 30 A, MOP 30 A). These two loads add up: we look at your electrical panel's capacity before proposing anything.

Down to −21 °C, the AOUH48KUAS1 heats and cools, and the brochure speaks of "no lockout" when it is cold. Below that, the backup kit takes over. For the whole series, the manufacturer claims up to 33% of rated heating above nominal capacity. The certification file provides two different test points, shown as they are: 37,200 BTU (COP 2.99) at −8 °C and 41,000 BTU (COP 2.24) at −15 °C. Its ratings: SEER2 17.0, HSPF2 9.6 and EER2 9.5 (AHRI certificate 217290597), with an Inverter compressor and R-32 refrigerant, whose global warming potential is low.

The air handler stays at 34 dB(A) at low speed and reaches 51 dB(A) at full airflow. The AOUH48KUAS1 unit, at 31 × 12.63 × 37 in., is rated at 59 dB(A): we pick a side of the house where it won't bother the patio or the neighbours. In a large house, it sometimes ends up far from the mechanical room, and that is where the refrigerant line (3/8 and 5/8 in.) matters. It accepts up to 75 m (246 ft) of length, the precharge covers 30 m (98 ft) of it, it needs at least 5 m (16 ft) and the height gap between the two units tops out at 30 m (98 ft). Beyond the precharge, the refrigeration technician adds the required refrigerant at commissioning.

In humid weather, the spec sheet lists 4.7 pints/h of dehumidification. For maintenance, a 20 × 20 in. filter base is among the options; with that much airflow, a clogged filter shows up fast, so keep a spare on hand. The leak detection system is built into the unit.

On the grant side, this is the most generous size in the CENTAURI series: Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list, in its October 27, 2026 version, gives it $4,464; if the list changes before you apply, the new version is the one that applies. It also holds ENERGY STAR cold climate certification (ID 4428950). Warranty: compressor and parts 12 years, labour 6 years.

The ideal profile: a large house where every room already gets its air from the duct system. If a whole wing is poorly served by the current network, a single system may not be the right answer, and the duct layout shows it quickly. AirGreen, an HVAC contractor that holds AIRSTAGE Elite Plus installer status, makes that call at the visit.

A free quote in Îles-Laval and everywhere in Laval

We install this 4-ton system in Îles-Laval and the other neighbourhoods of Laval, as well as in Longueuil, Montreal, on the South Shore and on the North Shore. For your free quote, the number is 514 316-2973: we will come to see the mechanical room, the duct system, the electrical panel and the spot for the outdoor unit.

Before you call, take a photo of your current thermostat and of the label on your heating unit. Those two pictures already give us a good idea of compatibility with the 24 V interface.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0715/1694/6724/files/00_THERMOPOMPE_CENTRALE_GENERAL_AIRSTAGE_CENTAURI_48000_BTU_CARTE_PRINCIPALE_MONTREAL_LAVAL_LONGUEUIL_RIVE_SUD_RIVE_NORD_ce7469c7-6aad-4387-b7de-4646f8f476e8.png?v=1793183246
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0715/1694/6724/collections/00_THERMOPOMPE_CENTRALE_GENERAL_AIRSTAGE_CENTAURI_48000_BTU_CARTE_PRINCIPALE_MONTREAL_LAVAL_LONGUEUIL_RIVE_SUD_RIVE_NORD_ce7469c7-6aad-4387-b7de-4646f8f476e8.png?v=1793184726
https://airgreen.ca/en/collections/thermopompe-centrale-general-airstage-centauri-r32-montreal-laval-longueuil-rive-sud-nord.oembed
