Its sheet gives a net airflow of 259 cfm at 0.4 in of static pressure and 299 cfm at 0.2 in. Fantech also announces an average airflow of 267 cfm at 0.4 in: that is the gross airflow, measured before subtracting the air that passes from one airstream to the other inside the unit. We use the net airflow, the one that actually reaches the rooms.

This size is aimed at very large homes, multi-storey homes with a finished basement, and residences where several bathrooms and a large kitchen must be ventilated at the same time.

The right size first

A unit too large for the home runs at low speed almost all the time and costs more to buy; too small, it is not enough for the bedrooms and bathrooms. For a requirement close to 250 cfm, we also present the HERO 250H-EC, with EC motors, so you can compare consumption over the years. Beyond the capacity of the SHR 260RD, we look at a two-unit solution or a light commercial unit.

67% recovery at −25 °C

According to Fantech's sheet, sensible recovery efficiency is 67% at −25 °C and 123 cfm. At 0 °C, it is 66% at 118 cfm as well as at 162 cfm, and 64% at 248 cfm. The result in deep cold is therefore on par with the one published at 0 °C.

That 67% exceeds the 60% that section 9.32 of the Quebec Construction Code requires for a new home in the coldest regions, and therefore also the 54% threshold for Greater Montreal. The published apparent sensible effectiveness is 77% at 0 °C and 118 cfm; Fantech states that this value is not HVI certified.

Recirculation defrost

Below −5 °C, the unit defrosts by internal recirculation: the house air passes through the cores to clear the frost. Fantech states that this defrost does not depressurize the home. In a large, well-insulated home, the balance between incoming and outgoing air is maintained throughout the winter.

Two cores, four filters, access from two sides

The SHR 260RD houses two aluminum cores, 12 × 12 in and 11.5 in deep, protected by four washable electrostatic filters of 11.5 × 11.4 in. Its access panels are on both sides of the unit, which leaves more choice when placing it in the mechanical room. Fantech recommends 14 in of clearance in front of the unit to remove the cores.

We recommend checking and washing the four filters every three months. During the annual maintenance visit, we clean both cores, check the drain pan and drain hose, and check the balancing.

Airflow that holds under pressure

The published curve gives 299 cfm net at 0.2 in, 259 at 0.4 in, 213 at 0.6 in, 162 at 0.8 in and 105 at 1.0 in. In a very large home, ducts are long and branched; we check the system pressure before confirming that the unit will deliver the calculated airflow, and we correct the duct layout if needed.

Power consumption

At 118 cfm, the unit draws 136 W, or about 0.9 cfm per watt; at 162 cfm, 182 W; at 248 cfm, 272 W. At −25 °C and 123 cfm, the sheet lists 168 W. Rated power is 300 W at 2.5 A on 120 V. Running continuously at the first test point, that comes to about 1,191 kWh per year, the figure shown in this page's spec sheet. It is a real consumption to plan for: we set the speed to the calculated airflow, not to the maximum. In the quote, we show this consumption next to that of the other units that fit, so you can compare the cost over the years and not only at purchase.

Installation and connections

Dimensions: 27 7/8 × 25 1/4 × 20 1/2 in (L × D × H).

Weight: 90 lb.

8 in side connections; the fresh air collar has a built-in adjustable balancing damper.

Drain required: drain hose kit included.

Power supply: 120 V.

The unit hangs with the supplied chain kit, from the bolts at the four top corners. At 90 lb, we check the structure that will carry it, and we keep access to both sides of the unit when the mechanical room allows it. It must be installed in a heated space where maintenance stays easy, and its condensate must flow to a drain or a condensate pump.

Controls

A three-position rocker switch on the unit (reduced speed, standby, normal speed) provides continuous ventilation. As options: the programmable touch-screen ECO-Touch IAQ control, the ECO-Feel automatic air quality control, the EDF7, EDF1R and MDEH1 dehumidistats, and the RTS-W, RTS2 and RTS5 timers.

Warranty

Fantech warrants the aluminum cores for life (limited warranty), the motors for 7 years and parts for 5 years.

Installation by AirGreen in Greater Montreal

At this size, the room-by-room calculation of the CSA F326 standard is essential. Fantech's manual gives the order of magnitude: 10 L/s (20 cfm) for the master bedroom, 5 L/s (10 cfm) for each other bedroom and for the living room. We add up the needs room by room, then compare the total with the SHR 260RD curve and with the pressure of your duct system.

After installation, we balance fresh air and exhaust air to the calculated airflow with the collar damper, then give you the measured values.
