For optimal, long-lasting performance of your Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV), consistent and thorough maintenance is essential. At AirGreen, we know that the longevity of these ventilation systems depends on a few technical tasks—far too often overlooked. That’s why we’ve created an exclusive 8-step checklist, based on our field expertise across Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, as well as the North Shore and South Shore, to help you keep your ventilation system in top condition and avoid costly breakdowns.
Why HRV Maintenance Is Essential
An HRV system (Heat Recovery Ventilator) plays a crucial role in indoor air quality. It renews the air, reduces humidity, and filters out pollutants while maintaining energy efficiency in your building. Without proper HVAC maintenance, dust, mold, and debris can build up, restrict airflow, overwork the motors, and eventually shorten the unit’s lifespan.
From our experience during service calls across Greater Montréal, we often find that performance issues come down to simple, avoidable lack of maintenance.
Step 1: Shut Off the Power Before Doing Anything
Before opening the HRV unit, make sure to cut off electrical power. This is a critical safety step. It prevents the fan from accidentally turning on during your inspection or cleaning.
Step 2: Clean or Replace the Filters
Filters should be cleaned every 2 to 3 months and replaced as needed. They’re your first line of defense against airborne particles.
-
Foam or synthetic filters: rinse them in warm water and let them dry completely before putting them back.
-
Disposable pleated filters: replace them according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.
A clogged filter blocks airflow, reduces system efficiency, and can even damage the fans.
Step 3: Check Intake and Exhaust Vents
In Montréal and Laval alike, exterior intake and exhaust vents can easily become obstructed by leaves, snow, or debris. Check them regularly and clear any blockages to ensure smooth airflow.
Step 4: Clean the Heat Recovery Core
The heat recovery core (usually made of plastic or aluminum) should be carefully removed and cleaned with warm soapy water.
-
Never use harsh chemicals.
-
Rinse thoroughly, then let it air dry fully before reinstalling.
This component is key to your system’s energy efficiency.
Step 5: Inspect the Ventilation Ducts
Over time, dust, mold, or even small pests can get into the ductwork. A professional duct cleaning every 3 to 5 years is highly recommended, especially in urban zones like Longueuil or humid environments on the South Shore.
At AirGreen, we offer a complete duct cleaning service, including video camera inspections.
Step 6: Check the Fans
The HRV’s fans can collect dirt, leading to imbalance, vibrations, or overheating. A gentle cleaning using a soft brush or vacuum keeps them running smoothly. It’s also important to check alignment and blade condition.
We recently handled a call in Boisbriand (North Shore) where a client’s fan motor had overheated simply due to accumulated dust.
Step 7: Inspect Dampers and Louvers
Some HRV models feature motorized or manual dampers to balance airflow. These should be free of blockages, well-lubricated, and functioning properly.
A recurring issue we’ve seen in several Brossard installations is a stuck intake damper, leading to critical under-ventilation.
Step 8: Reset and Test the System
After completing maintenance, plug the system back in, reinstall the filters, and make sure the HRV runs as expected.
-
Check airflow levels in each room.
-
Listen for any unusual sounds.
-
Monitor the electronic controls on the display or remote.
We also recommend using a humidex monitor to assess whether indoor humidity is properly controlled after restarting.
When Should You Call an AirGreen Professional?
While parts of this HVAC maintenance can be done yourself, some elements require technical expertise, especially when it comes to:
-
Electrical or control board issues
-
Improper air pressure balancing
-
Incorrect system configuration for the building
-
Deep cleaning of the core or ductwork
-
Ongoing abnormal noise despite cleaning
Our technicians operate throughout Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and South Shore, offering certified expertise in maintaining all HRV brands (Venmar, Lifebreath, Aldes, Fantech, etc.).
Practical Tips to Extend Your HRV’s Lifespan
-
Schedule a full inspection once a year, preferably in the fall.
-
Use quality filters and replace them often.
-
Keep an eye on changes in indoor humidity.
-
Get your system’s airflow balancing checked every 3 years.
We’ve found that a consistent annual maintenance routine can double an HRV’s lifespan, while dramatically improving indoor air quality.
