When installing a wall-mounted heat pump in an urban environment, performance is only part of the equation. The other, equally important part is integration: how to run the refrigerant lines through a brick facade, how to protect everything from the elements, how to avoid vibrations, and how to maintain a clean (even elegant) appearance, even on a multi-story building.
This week, our AirGreen team intervened in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie for the installation of a Gree Charmo wall-mounted heat pump , in a typical Montreal brick residential building: simple volumes, aligned windows, exposed side wall, and height constraints that require a methodical approach.
The context: four-season comfort in a brick building
Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie is a vibrant neighbourhood with a diverse housing stock: plexes, small apartment buildings, condominiums, partial renovations, sometimes heterogeneous insulation… In short, a place where the choice and installation of an HVAC system must be considered for real comfort , not just to “tick a box”.
In this project, the client was primarily looking for:
-
reliable cooling in summer (even during humid heat waves);
-
an efficient auxiliary heating system in mid-season and winter (depending on the type of accommodation);
-
a silent and stable solution;
-
and a visually clean installation, despite a long descent/ascent of pipes on the exterior wall.
The Gree Charmo fits very well into this type of need: a wall-mounted heat pump designed to offer a good balance between efficiency, comfort and regulation, in a mini-split format suitable for Montreal homes.
Machine type: wall-mounted heat pump (mini-split)
From the visible elements, it is clearly a wall-mounted heat pump (mini-split system): a compact outdoor compressor installed on a wall bracket, with refrigerant lines protected by an external duct (pipe cover) which leads up to the indoor unit (not visible in the photo, but consistent with the layout).
This type of configuration is precisely what is suitable when:
-
we want to avoid heavy ductwork (as in a central system);
-
we want comfortable control room by room (or zone by zone);
-
We are looking for a quick, clean, and efficient solution for an existing dwelling.
Brand and model: Gree Charmo
The brand supplied manually is our reference: Gree Charmo .
In the article (and for the customer), it was indeed a Gree Charmo that was installed, with a residential wall configuration.
When the exact model (full series, precise capacity, sub-reference) is not 100% legible in a photo, our approach at AirGreen is simple: we remain consistent and accurate on the range (here, Charmo), and we describe the benefits and the logic of installation without inventing risky specifications.
The installation details that matter (and that you can actually see)
On this construction site, several details are particularly telling — and they make all the difference in terms of durability, aesthetics, and peace of mind.
1) Robust wall mounting, clearances, and vibration management
The outdoor unit is mounted on a sturdy, properly sized metal wall bracket . In a neighborhood like Rosemont, this is often the best choice.
-
This avoids problems related to snow, ice, and accumulation on the ground;
-
a functional clearance is maintained;
-
We protect the device and simplify maintenance.
We also pay particular attention to reducing vibrations (silent blocks, proper tightening, leveling). A properly installed heat pump is one you forget about: no humming transmitted through the wall, no resonance in the rooms.
2) Long-range, but clean, external conduit (pipe cover)
What immediately stands out: the dark-finished cable channel (line cover), installed with a clean line, including an "L" bend to follow the building's geometry. On brick facades, this is exactly what we want.
-
mechanical protection of pipes and cables;
-
protection against UV, rain, freeze/thaw cycles;
-
aesthetically pleasing finish consistent with the facade (more discreet than an exposed beam).
In multi-story buildings, a well-installed gutter is also a guarantee of durability : less risk of being torn off, less infiltration, less visible “DIY” over the years.
3) Electrical disconnect box nearby
A disconnect switch is located near the outdoor unit. This is a point often overlooked in quick installations; at AirGreen, it's non-negotiable: accessibility, safety, compliance, and easy maintenance.
4) Management of the descent (drain) and external pathways
We see a downward-sloping line — typically associated with condensate drainage and/or the routing of certain components. In practice, a good installation is:
-
a structured and clearly defined path;
-
a management system that prevents water from flowing back into the ground;
-
and care must be taken to ensure that nothing becomes fragile due to wind, frost, or snow removal.
Why this configuration is ideal in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie
This neighborhood blends urban density with buildings of varying styles. A properly installed Gree Charmo wall-mounted heat pump offers tangible benefits:
-
Rapid comfort : efficient temperature rise/fall.
-
Precise control : ideal for bedrooms, living room, open area.
-
Energy efficiency : reducing reliance on less efficient solutions for supplemental heating or air conditioning.
-
Suitable installation : without having to redo all the building's mechanics.
And above all: when the piping has to run along a facade for several meters, the difference between a “correct” installation and an AirGreen installation is immediately visible.
The points we systematically check before, during and after
Even though each building is unique, our method remains rigorous.
Before installation
-
validation of the location (air circulation, neighborhood, noise, access);
-
route plan for the connections (as short and clean as possible);
-
verification of facade constraints (brick, joints, anchors);
-
aesthetic integration strategy.
During installation
-
fixing the wall bracket to appropriate anchors;
-
upgrading and checking clearances;
-
complete protection of the connections in the cable tray;
-
clean and safe electrical connections.
After installation
-
functional tests (air conditioning mode, heating mode);
-
validation of noises and vibrations;
-
final check of the visual rendering (because yes, it matters);
-
Explanation to the client: maintenance, best practices, adjustments.
Maintenance tips for a Gree Charmo in an urban environment
To maintain performance and avoid surprises:
-
clean the filters of the indoor unit regularly (simple, but crucial);
-
keep the outdoor unit clear (leaves, dust, snow);
-
visually inspect the gutter and fixings once a season;
-
perform periodic professional preventative maintenance (especially before winter).
A heat pump is an investment: if well maintained, it remains stable, quiet and efficient for longer.
Key takeaways from this AirGreen installation
This project in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie perfectly illustrates what we like to do: install a Gree Charmo wall-mounted heat pump in a solid , clean , and logical way, even when the building requires a long exterior route.
When the result is aesthetic, safe, durable… comfort becomes a given, not a source of worry.
