In a modern condo in Montreal's Southwest neighbourhood, a co-owner finally wanted to enjoy true four-season comfort. The apartment was well insulated, but the summer heat trapped through the large, sun-drenched windows, and the electric heating drove up the bill in winter.
We recommended the installation of a Gree wall-mounted heat pump , with a compact outdoor unit installed on the private balcony.
A condo with a balcony: a highly regulated context
In a condominium, every HVAC project must comply with:
-
the rules of the union (noise, appearance of the facilities, positioning of the equipment);
-
the space constraints of the balcony, which must remain usable;
-
safety (clearing exits, avoiding obstructions).
The balcony in the photograph perfectly illustrates this reality: a concrete slab, a dark brick wall, a patio door on the left, and a glass balustrade on the right. The space is limited, but sufficient to accommodate a properly installed Gree outdoor unit.
Our objectives:
-
integrate the system without compromising the aesthetics of the facade;
-
respect the necessary clearances for air circulation;
-
limit the transmission of noise and vibrations to neighbors as much as possible;
-
simplify maintenance and any necessary servicing.
The solution: a compact and efficient Gree wall-mounted heat pump
We installed a Gree mini-split wall-mounted heat pump , approximately 9,000 to 12,000 BTU, sized for the area of the condo unit.
This configuration offers several advantages:
-
Heating and air conditioning with a single unit, perfectly suited to Montreal's climate.
-
Gree inverter technology : the machine continuously modulates its power, which improves comfort and reduces electricity consumption.
-
Compact size : ideal for condo balconies, where every centimeter counts.
-
Quiet operation : an essential criterion in a stacked apartment building.
Inside, the Gree wall head is installed in the main living area, so as to distribute the conditioned or heated air to the living room and dining area.
A Gree outdoor unit perfectly positioned on the balcony
The photo shows the Gree outdoor unit placed on a raised aluminum stand :
-
Elevated support fixed in the slab
The metal frame is securely anchored in the concrete of the balcony. This height allows for:-
to protect the unit in case of water or snow accumulation;
-
to improve air circulation under the device;
-
to facilitate balcony cleaning and machine maintenance.
-
-
Clearance from the brick wall
The unit is not attached to the wall: the rear space is sufficient to ensure good air return and comply with the manufacturer's recommendations. -
Noise and vibration management
The support is designed to limit the transmission of vibrations to the concrete, thus reducing potential noise felt in the condo or by neighbors. -
Positioned near the patio door… but without being obstructed
The device is placed at a calculated distance from the patio door, so that:-
leave a comfortable passage for moving around on the balcony;
-
avoid direct airflow onto occupants when they go outside;
-
to maintain easy access for our service team.
-
-
Compliant power supply
On the left, a weatherproof outdoor box is visible. The power supply was installed according to the Quebec Electrical Code , with a dedicated circuit breaker and a nearby disconnect switch, as required by safety standards.
Performance and comfort in Montreal's climate
Even though the outdoor unit appears compact, the Gree wall-mounted heat pump installed here is capable of:
-
efficiently heat the condo for a large part of the winter, taking over from the electric baseboard heaters;
-
cooling and dehumidifying in summer, which greatly improves perceived comfort;
-
to offer stable operation without large temperature variations, thanks to compressor modulation.
For the customer in the Southwest, the expected benefits are clear:
-
decrease in electricity bill over the year;
-
increased comfort in the main living area;
-
disappearance of the noise and bulk of a portable or window air conditioner.
