Central heat pump cleaning in Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce

An aging but still efficient outdoor unit

At AirGreen , we believe that regular cleaning of HVAC systems can significantly extend the lifespan of a unit, even after many years of use. Our team recently travelled to Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce to perform a complete cleaning of a central heat pump whose outdoor unit showed obvious signs of corrosion and fouling.

Initial diagnosis: dirt, rust, and loss of efficiency

Upon our arrival, we observed several problems typical of a device exposed to the elements:

  • Accumulation of dust, pollen and plant debris on the condenser fins;

  • Rusty top grille , reducing fan airflow;

  • Metal fins clogged all around the device;

  • Dense vegetation is present around the module, limiting air circulation.

These combined factors caused overconsumption of energy and noisier operation of the compressor, a sign of disrupted heat exchange.

Site preparation and safety measures

Before any intervention, our team has:

  1. Cut off the power supply at the external circuit breaker;

  2. Clear the work area, including surrounding plants and foliage;

  3. Checked the stability of the unit's base — an often overlooked but essential element to prevent excessive vibration.

Complete cleaning process

1. Cleaning the condenser fins

We began with gentle brushing to remove the most stubborn debris, followed by compressed air blowing to eliminate accumulated dust between the slats. This process restores free airflow, essential for the system's performance.

2. Application of a biodegradable cleaner

We then sprayed a specialized, eco-friendly HVAC detergent designed to dissolve grease, pollen, and microorganisms without damaging metal surfaces. This product, based on natural surfactants, promotes quick and safe rinsing.

3. Low-pressure rinsing

A thorough rinse with clean water removed all residue without risking bending the fins. This step is crucial to prevent stagnant areas where corrosion could worsen.

4. Anti-corrosion treatment of the grid

The fan grille, which was partially rusted, was mechanically cleaned and protected with a rust-preventative coating . This treatment extends its lifespan and prevents deterioration caused by humidity and road salt.

5. Internal cleaning and connection check

A quick inspection of the unit's interior revealed greasy residue on the fan blades. After cleaning with an antistatic cloth and a mild detergent, the electrical connections were tightened and the seals checked.

Results observed after cleaning

Upon restarting, the results were immediate:

  • Significant reduction in operating noise ;

  • Improved blowing pressure and heat transfer;

  • Lower discharge temperature , evidence of optimized air exchange;

  • Energy consumption reduced by approximately 10 to 15% according to customer readings.

The impressed owner also noted that his system regained constant thermal stability throughout the house, without the variations observed previously.

AirGreen recommendations for sustainable maintenance

At AirGreen, we advise all owners of central heat pumps :

  • To maintain a minimum clearance of 60 cm around the outdoor unit;

  • To carry out a professional cleaning in the spring and a visual inspection before winter;

  • Apply a protective coating to parts exposed to rust every two years;

  • Have the fins and compressor inspected to prevent any long-term loss of performance.

Regular preventative maintenance not only preserves the energy performance of the system, but also extends its useful life by several years , while maintaining optimal indoor air quality.
