Unique Case Study: How a Floor-Ceiling Unit Made an Office in Longueuil More Productive

Thermal comfort under control for optimized productivity in Longueuil

In the professional world, employee comfort is a key factor for productivity and workplace well-being. At AirGreen, we are often called upon to intervene in environments where thermal management is a daily challenge for the teams. That was the case with this recent HVAC installation carried out in an office located in Longueuil, where the objective was clear: to create a pleasant, quiet, and energy-efficient work environment, regardless of the outdoor weather conditions.

We proposed a tailor-made solution: a high-end floor-ceiling heat pump, perfectly suited to the unique layout of this commercial space.

Installation Context: A Space That’s Hard to Heat and Cool

This 120 m² office, located on the ground floor of a commercial building in Longueuil, presented several technical challenges:

  • High ceilings (over 3 meters),

  • No drop ceilings (ruling out ducted or recessed cassette installations),

  • Large southeast-facing windows, exposing the space to strong sunlight during summer,

  • An outdated electric heating system, inefficient and energy-draining.

Given these constraints, the choice of a floor-ceiling unit became the best option to ensure even thermal comfort without compromising the aesthetics of the workspace.

Equipment Selection: A Fujitsu R-32 Floor-Ceiling Heat Pump

To meet the exact needs of this project, we selected a Fujitsu floor-ceiling heat pump, model ABYG18LVTB / AOYG18LVC, with a capacity of 18,000 BTU. This model stands out for its:

  • Discreet design, perfect for professional environments;

  • Dual airflow (top and bottom), ideal for rooms with thermal stratification;

  • Ultra-quiet operation, essential in a work setting;

  • Compatibility with R-32 refrigerant, more eco-friendly and efficient;

  • SEER rating of 20.5 and SCOP of 4.6, delivering significant energy savings.

This system is also eligible for Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert grant, with an estimated rebate of $1,704, which reinforced the client’s decision.

Installation Details in Longueuil

Our team carried out the work over two days, with a clear goal: to minimize any disruption to the office’s daily activities while delivering a flawless installation. Key steps included:

  • Airflow analysis to strategically position the unit on a side wall clear of obstructions, about 20 cm from the ceiling,

  • Mounting the outdoor unit on a wall bracket with anti-vibration insulation to maintain indoor peace and quiet,

  • Careful wall drilling to route the refrigerant lines and electrical wiring,

  • Connection to the electrical panel with a dedicated 20A breaker, in full compliance with CSA standards,

  • Complete system testing in both heating and cooling modes, with full checks on airflow, pressure, and automatic regulation.

Thanks to precise planning, there was no dust, no excessive noise, and zero disruption to business operations during the installation.

Real Results: More Comfort, Less Stress

Just days after the installation, the staff noticed:

  • A stable, evenly distributed temperature, even during extreme cold spells;

  • A noticeable reduction in ambient noise compared to the old baseboard heaters;

  • Improved indoor air quality thanks to the integrated filtration system;

  • An estimated 30% reduction in monthly energy consumption, based on previous billing comparisons.

The office manager told us that the overall atmosphere had improved, with employees being “more focused, less tired, and generally more satisfied” with their work environment.

Why Choose a Floor-Ceiling Heat Pump for Offices?

Floor-ceiling units are still relatively unknown, but they offer significant benefits in certain commercial settings:

  • Flexible installation where drop ceilings are not available,

  • Vertical and horizontal airflow to cover large volumes,

  • Clean and discreet appearance, fitting all types of interior design,

  • Easy access for maintenance, reducing long-term upkeep costs,

  • Eligibility for grants like those available on the South Shore.

They’re an ideal HVAC solution for retail spaces, offices, conference rooms, or classrooms with architectural constraints.

Tips for Building Managers and Office Owners

Before investing in an HVAC system, it’s important to:

  • Anticipate annual energy costs based on equipment performance,

  • Verify eligibility for provincial and local grants,

  • Work with a certified, experienced installer, like AirGreen.

A system that’s well-chosen, properly installed, and regularly maintained not only helps you cut energy costs but also boosts employee comfort and motivation.
