A custom wall integration to preserve space, the parquet flooring, and access to the French door
This Friedrich ZoneAire® Premier PTAC installation in Sainte-Christine presents a particularly interesting configuration: the appliance was integrated into the bottom of a wall, very close to a large French door, in a room with parquet flooring and long, lightweight curtains.
The result looks simple at first glance. However, several details had to be coordinated precisely: the opening through the wall, the metal sleeve, the PTAC's depth, the interior finish, the perimeter sealing, condensate drainage, and unrestricted airflow.
At AirGreen, we also paid particular attention to the existing layout. The Friedrich ZoneAire® Premier had to avoid obstructing access to the French door, damaging the parquet flooring, or altering the room with disproportionate finishing work. The appliance had to integrate as a permanent part of the building, rather than appear as a last-minute addition.
What the photo reveals about this installation in Sainte-Christine
Several installation features are immediately visible:
- the PTAC is installed at a low height, directly in an exterior wall;
- a white finish neatly frames the appliance;
- a raised base supports the front and protects the transition with the floor;
- the large front return-air grille remains fully accessible;
- the upper grille directs air toward the center of the room;
- the appliance is located near a French door and full-length curtains;
- no exposed refrigerant line runs through the room;
- no separate outdoor unit occupies the balcony or the façade visible from indoors;
- The parquet flooring was preserved around the installation.
The cabinet extends slightly beyond the wall, which is normal for a PTAC. Part of the appliance must remain indoors to provide access to the controls, filters, and service components, while the rear section passes through the wall to exchange heat with the outdoors.
An appliance well suited to existing wall openings
The PTAC, or packaged terminal air conditioner, combines the main components required for air conditioning in a single chassis. Depending on the selected version, the Friedrich ZoneAire® Premier can also include electric heating or a heat pump with auxiliary electric heating.
This design can be a very practical solution in buildings that already have through-wall openings. In particular, it avoids:
- the installation of a separate outdoor unit;
- the routing of refrigerant lines along the walls;
- the addition of a drain visible over a long distance;
- the occupation of a balcony by a condenser;
- certain finishing work associated with a ductless wall-mounted air conditioner.
The current Friedrich ZoneAire® Premier lineup includes electric-heating and heat-pump versions, with rated capacities covering approximately the 7,000 to 15,000 BTU/h categories. However, the full model number of the installed unit must be read from its nameplate to confirm its exact capacity and heating type.
A finish built around the PTAC rather than a bare installation
One of the most interesting elements of this job is the interior finish. The PTAC does not simply appear to have been placed in a rough opening. A white structure was built around the unit to create a clean transition with the wall.
The lower section forms a continuous base. On the right side, a vertical trim piece meets the existing baseboard. At the back, a horizontal strip protects and conceals the joint between the sleeve and the wall.
This method offers several advantages:
- it conceals irregularities around the opening;
- it reduces spaces where dust could accumulate;
- it facilitates integration into a residential room;
- it protects the wall edges;
- it helps keep the unit level and visually aligned;
- it allows for a finish that matches the existing baseboards.
However, the finish must never prevent removal of the front panel. The filters, controls, and service components must remain accessible without dismantling part of the wall.
The wall sleeve: the determining component behind the front panel
The sleeve is a metal enclosure installed through the wall. It houses the PTAC chassis, supports its positioning, and partially separates the indoor and outdoor sections.
For current models in the ZoneAire® Premier series, Friedrich specifies a standard sleeve measuring approximately 16 inches high, 42 inches wide, and 13 3/4 inches deep. The complete unit with its front panel extends farther into the room, with an overall depth of approximately 21 to 21 1/2 inches, depending on the configuration. The recommended rough opening is slightly larger than the sleeve dimensions to allow for proper installation and leveling.
On a real job site, we never limit ourselves to measuring the old unit. We also inspect:
- the interior width of the sleeve;
- its height;
- its depth;
- the slope toward the exterior;
- the condition of the metal surfaces;
- the presence of corrosion;
- the strength of the lower support;
- the condition of the seals;
- the compatibility of the exterior grille;
- the spaces between the sleeve and the wall structure.
A new unit installed in a deformed or improperly sloped sleeve can produce noise, vibrate, allow outside air to enter, or direct water toward the floor.
Particular attention to protecting the flooring
The flooring visible in this room is in good condition and covers the entire area in front of the PTAC. During the work, this type of surface must be protected from tools, debris, chassis movement, and condensate.
A PTAC can weigh more than 100 pounds depending on its capacity and version. The technical data for the current series indicates approximate net weights ranging from about 110 to 120 pounds. The unit must therefore be moved in a controlled manner to avoid scratching or denting the floor.
Once installation is complete, condensate management becomes just as important. In air conditioning, moisture extracted from the air turns into water on the indoor coil. This water must be directed to the section specified by the manufacturer without returning to the room.
An improper slope or accumulation of dirt can cause:
- a leak beneath the unit;
- swelling of the flooring;
- discoloration of the wood;
- deterioration of the baseboard;
- damp odors;
- hidden damage at the bottom of the wall.
The ZoneAire® Premier series notably uses a condensate management system with a projection ring, designed to help drain water at the exterior section. A drainage assembly may also be required depending on the building and installation method.
Sealing around the opening: work that is not visible in the photo
The PTAC extends completely through the building envelope. When not properly prepared, this opening can become a significant point of infiltration.
We must create a continuous barrier around the sleeve to limit:
- cold drafts;
- moisture intrusion;
- rain penetration;
- insect infiltration;
- noise from outside;
- heating losses;
- condensation inside the wall.
The interior trim visible in the photo provides a clean finish, but it does not by itself constitute a technical weatherproof seal. The necessary seals and insulating materials must be installed behind this finish.
We also inspect the exterior junction, because water must be directed away from the wall and opening. The exterior seal must withstand temperature variations, sunlight, rain, and normal material movement.
Air circulation suited to the room’s layout
The Friedrich’s front panel comprises two distinct areas. The large lower grille draws in room air, while the upper grille distributes conditioned or heated air.
In this installation in Sainte-Christine, the area in front of the unit is unobstructed. This arrangement allows room air to enter without being blocked by a sofa, dresser, or decorative panel.
The upper outlet is directed upward and forward. This allows the air to mix with the room air before returning to the return-air grille.
Poor air circulation can cause:
- uneven temperature;
- operating cycles that are too long;
- increased noise level;
- higher electricity consumption;
- freezing of the indoor coil;
- reduced dehumidification;
- premature fan wear.
The owner must therefore keep the area in front of the front panel clear, even after rearranging the room.
The particular challenge of long curtains
The patio door has lightweight curtains that hang almost to the floor. They contribute to the room’s aesthetics, but their proximity to the PTAC should be monitored.
When the curtains are moved by the airflow, they can:
- partially cover the return-air grille;
- be pulled against the front panel;
- change the direction of the airflow;
- trap dust near the filter;
- create a rubbing noise;
- interfere with the unit’s temperature reading.
In this configuration, it is preferable to keep the curtains to the side when the PTAC is operating. A discreet curtain stop or tieback can prevent the fabric from moving in front of the unit.
This precaution is particularly important for air conditioning, since airflow must remain stable to maintain good dehumidification.
Technical specifications, commissioning, and advice based on this installation
Available capacities and energy efficiency
The exact capacity of the pictured unit is not visible. It would therefore be unwise to claim that it is a 9,000, 12,000, or 15,000 BTU model without consulting its nameplate.
For the 2026 lineup, Friedrich offers air-conditioning models and heat pump models corresponding to the following main categories:
- approximately 7,000 BTU/h;
- approximately 9,000 to 10,000 BTU/h;
- approximately 12,000 BTU/h;
- approximately 15,000 BTU/h.
Depending on capacity, voltage, and version, published data indicate approximate EER ratings ranging from 10.4 to 13.3. For heat pump versions, the stated nominal COP varies approximately from 3.1 to 3.65. Current models use R-32 refrigerant.
These values should not be applied automatically to the PTAC shown in the photo. The complete model number remains essential for determining:
- the actual capacity;
- the exact EER;
- the exact COP;
- the heating capacity;
- the refrigerant type;
- the voltage;
- circuit amperage;
- compatible accessories.
How to choose the right capacity for a room
PTAC sizing should not be based solely on the dimensions of the opening. Several capacities may use the same sleeve size.
We assess, among other factors:
- the room’s area;
- the ceiling height;
- the amount of glazing;
- the orientation of the patio door;
- solar exposure;
- the building’s airtightness;
- the quality of the insulation;
- the number of occupants;
- the presence of heat-generating appliances;
- heating needs during winter.
In this room, the large glazed area may increase heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter. A calculation based solely on the number of square feet could therefore underestimate or overestimate the actual requirements.
An undersized unit may run almost continuously. Conversely, an oversized unit may quickly reach the desired temperature and then shut off before removing enough humidity.
Electric heat or integrated heat pump
The Friedrich ZoneAire® Premier series is available as an air-conditioning model with electric heat and as a heat pump model with auxiliary heat. Heat pump models can transfer outdoor heat into the room when conditions permit, while the electric elements may operate depending on the operating mode and demand.
Some features available in the current series include:
- continuous temperature monitoring;
- an accelerated initial heating mode on heat pump versions;
- electronic defrost control;
- freeze protection for an unoccupied room;
- separate limits for heating and cooling temperatures;
- an error-code memory;
- washable filters;
- two motors designed to reduce operating noise.
The exact presence of these features must be confirmed based on the year and model number of the installed unit.
The electrical supply can never be improvised
A Friedrich PTAC may be available in different voltages. The current documentation includes 208/230 V models as well as 265 V versions intended for certain applications. 15-, 20-, or 30-amp cords and circuits may be required depending on the heating capacity and selected configuration.
Before startup, we must confirm:
- the available voltage;
- the plug shape;
- circuit amperage;
- conductor gauge;
- circuit breaker capacity;
- grounding;
- the heating element’s power;
- the condition of the cord and plug.
Do not replace a plug, use an extension cord, or use an adapter to operate a unit on an unsuitable circuit. The outlet configuration helps prevent equipment from being connected when its load does not match the circuit.
On this installation, no bulky cable is visible in front of the PTAC. The connection was kept out of the traffic area and does not interfere with the finish.
Checks Performed During Commissioning
Once the chassis is installed, we perform a series of checks. A unit that starts is not necessarily a unit that has been properly commissioned.
We check:
- the stability of the PTAC in the sleeve;
- front panel positioning;
- the absence of contact between the fan and the housing;
- control response;
- airflow at the different speeds;
- discharge-air temperature;
- compressor startup;
- heating operation, when present;
- fan noise;
- vibrations transmitted to the wall;
- condensate drainage;
- the seal around the opening;
- access to the filters;
- the compatibility of the electrical connection.
We also observe the unit’s operation for several minutes. Some vibrations or drainage issues do not become apparent until the compressor has stabilized.
Mistakes to Avoid After Installation
Placing furniture in front of the grille
The PTAC needs to breathe. A coffee table, sofa, or storage box placed in front of the unit can significantly reduce airflow.
Allowing curtains to cover the unit
Long curtains visible near the patio door should be secured so they are not drawn toward the grille.
Placing objects on top
The top of the PTAC helps distribute air. Objects can block the grille, vibrate, or fall behind the unit.
Cleaning the front with excessive water
Water must not enter the controls or electrical components. A slightly damp cloth is generally preferable for exterior cleaning.
Neglecting a small leak
A water mark on the floor must be checked promptly. Waiting can turn a minor drainage issue into a floor repair.
Changing the finish without providing service access
A new molding or enclosure must not prevent removal of the panel or chassis.
Recommended Friedrich PTAC Maintenance
The filters must be inspected regularly, particularly during periods of heavy use. Current models in this series include washable filters accessible from the front.
Routine maintenance includes:
- removing dust from the grilles;
- washing or replacing filters according to their condition;
- checking for the presence of water;
- listening for unusual noises;
- clearing curtains and furniture;
- visual inspection of the outdoor section.
A professional HVAC maintenance service may include:
- cleaning the indoor coil;
- cleaning the fan wheel;
- sanitizing the condensate pan;
- clearing water passages;
- cleaning the outdoor coil;
- inspecting electrical connections;
- checking operating temperatures;
- checking the sleeve and its seals.
A dirty coil can reduce airflow even when the filter appears clean. In a room occupied daily, periodic cleaning also helps limit odors at startup.
Rebate eligibility: the complete model must be validated
The fact that a PTAC can operate as a heat pump does not automatically confirm its eligibility for the LogisVert program. Hydro-Québec requires the equipment to be checked in its search tool based on the model, the applicant's situation, and the installation date. The lists and amounts may change over time.
Before presenting financial assistance as guaranteed, we must obtain:
- the exact model number;
- the AHRI number, when applicable;
- the installation date;
- energy certification;
- the category recognized by the program;
- the address and type of building;
- the documents required by Hydro-Québec.
A PTAC should not be confused with a cold-climate ductless wall-mounted heat pump. These two types of equipment do not necessarily belong to the same rebate categories.
Why this project reflects our work method so well
This Friedrich ZoneAire® Premier PTAC installation in Sainte-Christine is not based solely on selecting a unit. It takes the entire room into account: the wall, patio door, curtains, hardwood floor, traffic flow, outdoor opening, and future maintenance.
The white finish allows the system to blend in without a major visual disruption. The front remains accessible, the floor in front of the unit stays clear, and the airflow is not enclosed beneath a shelf.
