Installation of a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE R32 multi-zone system on a flat roof in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie

In this project in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, we installed a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE R32 multi-zone heat pump on the flat roof of a residential building. The client's objective was clear: to provide year-round comfort to several apartments, while preserving the aesthetics of the facades and maximizing energy efficiency.

The setting: a typical Rosemont building with a flat roof

Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie is a neighbourhood full of plexes and small flat-roofed buildings, just like our client's. The balconies are already well occupied, the facades are visible from the street, and the ground space is limited.

Installing multiple outdoor units on the wall or floor would:

  • cluttered the balconies;

  • increased the noise perceived near the windows;

  • roof maintenance is complicated.

We therefore recommended a centralized rooftop solution : a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE R32 multi-zone system, capable of powering several indoor units while remaining discreet for occupants and neighbors.

Why choose a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE R32 multi-zone heat pump?

Comfort for multiple zones, with a single compressor

The AIRSTAGE R32 system allows multiple indoor units (wall-mounted, ducted, cassette, etc.) to be connected to a single outdoor compressor. Each zone can be controlled independently.

  • temperature adapted to each dwelling or room;

  • possibility of heating certain areas and cooling others according to seasonal needs;

  • better comfort management in a building with varied occupancy.

For our client in Rosemont, this means customized comfort for each occupant, without multiplying external equipment.

Energy efficiency and R32 refrigerant

R32 is a more efficient and environmentally friendly refrigerant than the older R-410A:

  • better energy efficiency;

  • reduced global warming potential;

  • optimized electricity consumption, particularly important with rising energy costs.

Combined with inverter technology and variable refrigerant flow (VRF) operation, the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE R32 heat pump continuously modulates its power to precisely adapt to the actual needs of the building, rather than always running at full power.

Designed for the Quebec climate

Fujitsu multi-zone systems are designed to maintain good heating capacity even in cold weather , which is essential in Montreal. The customer therefore benefits from:

  • reliable heating in the fall and spring, reducing the use of supplementary heating;

  • efficient and quiet air conditioning in summer;

  • of stable comfort despite frequent temperature variations in an urban climate like Rosemont.

Technical details of the rooftop installation

Strategic positioning of the outdoor unit

We installed the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE R32 unit on the flat roof of the building , near a parapet wall but with clearances respected all around to ensure optimal air circulation.

This positioning offers several advantages:

  • reduced noise for lower floors;

  • no visual impact on the facade;

  • secure access for our maintenance technicians;

while respecting Fujitsu's recommendations and HVAC best practices.

Elevated support for snow and drainage

The unit is mounted on a raised aluminum support , itself resting on supports that distribute the load across the roof membrane. Visually, one can distinguish:

  • a rigid metal structure;

  • support blocks placed on the roof;

  • pieces of wood used to distribute the weight and stabilize the whole structure.

This configuration allows you to:

  • keep the unit at a good height relative to the snow accumulated in winter;

  • promote good roof drainage;

  • avoid any pressure points that could damage the membrane.

Roof protection and vibration control

To protect the roof and the comfort of the occupants:

  • the supports are installed on bases adapted to the roof, with separating materials to avoid direct friction;

  • the structure is solidly leveled so that the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE R32 compressor operates without mechanical stress;

  • Anti-vibration elements limit the transmission of vibrations to the building, reducing the noise perceived inside.

Result: a stable, quiet and durable installation.

Refrigeration and electrical connections

From the roof, insulated refrigeration pipes descend to the indoor units, following discreet routes to maintain the building's aesthetics. The work includes:

  • the pulling of R32 refrigerant lines with the diameters recommended by Fujitsu;

  • adequate pipe insulation to limit energy loss;

  • communication and power cabling that complies with the electrical standards in force in Quebec;

  • managing condensation drainage to prevent any water accumulation on the roof.

The benefits for the customer

With this Fujitsu AIRSTAGE R32 multi-zone heat pump installation on a flat roof in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie , the client now benefits from:

  • Four-season comfort throughout the building;

  • Significant reduction in electricity bills , thanks to the high efficiency of the system and the R32;

  • Low noise level , since the machine is away from windows and balconies;

  • Unobstructed facades , without an accumulation of wall-mounted outdoor units;

  • Increasing the property's value is an important argument for renting or reselling housing.
