Installation of a Fujitsu Altair R-32 wall-mounted heat pump in Plateau-Mont-Royal

Discreet and elegant four-season comfort in a typical Montreal room

In Plateau-Mont-Royal , we modernized the comfort of a bedroom on the upper floor of a brick plex by installing a Fujitsu wall-mounted heat pump – Altair R-32 range . The compact, white indoor unit blends soberly under the room's dark ceiling, freeing up space while ensuring gentle heating in winter and quiet air conditioning in summer. The goal: to offer constant comfort , measurable energy savings and aesthetic integration adapted to the Plateau's architecture.

Customer context: optimizing a room exposed to the sun

The owner wanted to stabilize the temperature of a southwest-facing bedroom, which receives a lot of light in the late afternoon. The room has a wood floor , an electric convector at the bottom of the window , high ceilings, and dark walls—a configuration that absorbs heat in the summer and cools quickly in the winter. We recommended a 12,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump (precise sizing after load calculations), sufficient for a typical surface area of 18 to 28 m² with moderate heat losses.

Why the Fujitsu Altair R-32 series

Fujitsu 's Altair R-32 range is one of the new generations of low-climate impact systems. Its advantages:

  • R-32 refrigerant , with reduced global warming potential compared to R-410A.

  • Inverter compressor : fine modulation, stable comfort, reduced noise and consumption.

  • Extreme cold operation (down to -26°C on XLTH versions), ideal for Montreal.

  • Low interior noise level , suitable for rest rooms .

  • Multi-level filtration and dehumidification mode for heat waves.

  • Wi-Fi control available for remote management.

At equal power, the Altair R-32 offers an excellent performance/reliability compromise for urban housing in Greater Montreal (Montreal, Laval , Longueuil , North Shore , South Shore ).

Interior head location: optimal diffusion without glare

We positioned the unit under the ceiling , at the corner of the wall, above the light furniture, at a distance from the curtain. This placement:

  • Promotes airflow along the ceiling and then a uniform return to the sleeping area.

  • Avoids direct air currents on occupants.

  • Preserves window clarity and rod height .

  • Respect the recommended clearances (top, sides, front) to maintain performance.

Short and discreet refrigeration path

The room overlooks an exterior wall : we made a single through-hole behind the unit, limiting the length of the refrigeration lines to approximately 2–3 m . Benefits:

  • Minimized pressure losses, coefficient of performance preserved.

  • Fewer anchor points, neat visual finish inside and out.

  • Gravity condensate drain , more reliable in the long term than a pump.

Externally, the condenser is installed out of sight, on a protected rear platform , with silent blocks to reduce vibration and sufficient snow clearance for winter use. Communication and power wiring are routed neatly in UV trunking .

Key technical steps in HVAC installation

Our certified teams follow a rigorous protocol for each HVAC installation :

  1. Protection of work areas and laser tracing of center distances.

  2. Wall bracket anchored in the supporting structure; level control to avoid trickle noise.

  3. Flares calibrated to the prescribed torque; lubrication and capping against oxidation.

  4. Nitrogen test and leak test (micromanometer), then deep vacuum ≤ 500 microns .

  5. Opening of valves , control of superheating/subcooling and intensities.

  6. Settings (thermostat, modes, ventilation levels) for silent night-time operation.

  7. Customer training : maintenance, filter cleaning, optimization of Auto/Heat/Cool/Dry modes .

Integration with existing heating

The room had an electric baseboard heater . We programmed the heat pump as the main source and kept the baseboard heater as an emergency backup . Adjustment tips:

  • Heat pump set temperature 2°C above the baseboard to avoid conflicts.

  • Continuous “Heat” mode during very cold weather; fan on low for sleeping.

  • Use “Dry” mode in spring to speed up the return to comfort without overcooling.

Result: perceived comfort and silence

Upon commissioning, the occupant receives:

  • Enveloping warmth in winter, without excessive drying.

  • In summer, uniform air conditioning that avoids hot areas near the window.

  • A discreet sound level , compatible with reading and sleeping.

Grants and Eligibility

The Altair R-32 range of high-efficiency wall-mounted heat pumps are eligible for current programs (e.g., Efficient Heat Pumps ). Depending on the configuration and certified performance, our customers in Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , the North Shore and the South Shore can benefit from attractive discounts . We assist with the verification of criteria , documentation and deposit .

Best practices for longevity

To maintain performance and avoid premature failures:

  • Clean filters every 4 to 6 weeks during periods of heavy use.

  • Keep the condenser clear (leaves, snow, dust).

  • Schedule annual HVAC maintenance : pressure check, heat exchange , drainage , electrical measurement and controller update .

  • In the event of a prolonged absence in summer, choose a moderate setting rather than a complete shutdown in order to limit humidity.

What this installation teaches us about Plateau housing

  • The load-bearing walls of plexes often require careful drilling and reinforced anchors.

  • High ceilings promote stratification : a shutter direction oriented mid-height avoids direct cooling.

  • The proximity of a window requires managing sunlight (thermal curtains) to reduce short cycles.

  • A short refrigeration path is one of the keys to maintaining high efficiency and very low exterior noise .

Why entrust your project to AirGreen?

We are intimately familiar with the housing types in Greater Montreal : duplexes , triplexes , recent condos or houses on the North Shore and South Shore . Our promise:

  • Accurate sizing and clear recommendations (BTU, options, accessories).

  • Clean installation , respect for finishes and furniture.

  • Grant assistance from A to Z.

  • Local after-sales service and HVAC maintenance plan tailored to the use.

Extend comfort to other rooms

If the bedroom and living room need to be treated, there are two ways:

  • Multi-zone Fujitsu ( Aquila R-32 ), sharing one condenser for 2 to 5 heads.

  • Two independent wall systems if the use differs significantly (for example, office + bedroom), for more precise energy management .
