A neat installation in an attic bedroom: 4-season comfort and a clean finish on the North Shore
At AirGreen , we have just completed the HVAC installation of a Gree Clivia R32 wall-mounted heat pump in a renovated house in Sainte-Thérèse . The main room involved is an attic bedroom on the top floor, with a sloped roof and low windows—a context typical of North Shore homes where air circulation and humidity control require a methodical approach. The unit, installed high on the gable wall, provides year-round heating and cooling , with a discreet aesthetic integration despite the angle and height constraints.
Construction site context and client objectives
The owner was carrying out renovations : refinished floors, fresh paint, and furniture protected with film. His priorities:
-
Stable comfort for an attic room subject to overheating in summer and heat loss in winter;
-
Silence in the evening;
-
Compact and visually sober device;
-
Reduced operating costs and simple HVAC maintenance .
After measuring the surfaces, orientation and infiltration rate, we recommended a capacity of 12,000 BTU , perfectly sized for the floor, with a reserve for the adjoining area when the door remains open.
Why the Gree Clivia R32
The Clivia R32 is part of the recent generation of Gree wall-mounted heat pumps using R-32 refrigerant :
-
High energy efficiency and lower fluid charge than R-410A;
-
Inverter technology for fine modulation, long cycles and uniform temperature ;
-
Low temperature performance adapted to the climate of Greater Montreal;
-
Low interior noise level , ideal for a bedroom ;
-
Precise control and useful functions (soft start, dehumidification, sweeping).
This combination meets comfort expectations while controlling electricity consumption .
Interior layout: managing a room under a slope
The geometry of the room required a high placement on the right wall, under the flat part of the ceiling, away from the roof overhang. Our technical choices:
-
Perfectly level mounting template to avoid vibrations and noise;
-
Upper and side clearances respected to free the suction and facilitate maintenance;
-
Blowing orientation adjusted to sweep the volume under the slope without directly hitting the bed;
-
Optimized height above the woodwork so as not to interfere with the curtains.
The result: regular air diffusion in a complex volume, without unpleasant drafts.
Cooling and drainage path: short, clean, quiet
We favor a back-to-back route to reduce the length of connections (≈ 3–4 m) and maximize the COP :
-
Single hole through the exterior partition, protected by bulkhead and air-barrier foam ;
-
Discreet white capping along the exterior wall to the rear balcony;
-
Gravity drainage with continuous slope towards the outside: no condensate pump , therefore zero additional noise and simplified maintenance;
-
Careful interior/exterior sealing to prevent infiltration and air bridges .
Outdoor unit: durability and Quebec compliance
On the back wall, the condenser is installed:
-
On galvanized wall brackets with anti-vibration silent blocks ;
-
At clear height for winter defrosting and water drainage;
-
With compliant disconnector and power supply dedicated to the panel (rating according to nameplate), labeled by us;
-
Clearances are maintained around the grilles to ensure optimal airflow in both summer and winter.
In snowy areas, this configuration limits the risk of burial and facilitates maintenance .
Commissioning: our protocol
Our certified technicians apply a rigorous protocol :
-
Controlled flares and tightening torques respected;
-
Deep vacuum , vacuum resistance verified;
-
Opening the fluid and leak testing (listening, foaming, pressure measurement);
-
Electrical measurements (intensities, voltage) and delta T in cold/heat;
-
Settings : auto speed then fine adjustment to limit the stratification of a room under a slope;
-
User discount : filters, modes, seasonal best practices.
Specific challenges and solutions
1) Attic room
Air returns can be disrupted by the slope. We adjusted the blowing angle to bring the air to the center and then let it fall back to the resting areas, which stabilizes the temperature without drafts.
2) Renovation site
Protected furniture and fresh surfaces: anchoring was done with dowels adapted to the masonry and continuous vacuuming to avoid dust. The capping was adjusted to the millimeter for a clean finish once the work was completed.
3) Summer humidity management
The Dry function with low speed was explained to the customer to lower the humidity without overcooling, very useful in a room occupying the top floor.
Results obtained
-
Stable temperature at the set point (22–23°C) with minimal variations ;
-
Very low perceived noise , suitable for sleeping;
-
Sensitive responsiveness : 1–2°C drop in less than 15 minutes when tested in cold mode;
-
Efficient supplementary heating on cool mornings, reducing the need for electric baseboard heaters.
Good usage and maintenance practices
To get the most out of this wall-mounted heat pump :
Use
-
In summer: Cool or Auto mode at 23–24°C, shutters in sweep mode ;
-
In winter: Heat mode , low speed in the evening for silence, shutter directed slightly downwards to limit stratification under slope;
-
Keep the doors open if you want to cool the adjoining corridor.
Interview
-
Cleaning the pre-filters every 4 to 6 weeks during periods of use;
-
Clear leaves/dust from the condenser, check frost clearance in winter;
-
Annual AirGreen inspection : pressures, intensities, probes, mechanical tightening, condition of insulation and capping .
Regular maintenance protects the compressor and preserves efficiency .
Grants and Eligibility
High-efficiency R-32 wall-mounted heat pumps often meet the criteria required by grant programs in Quebec, particularly when low-temperature performance and Energy Star certification are present. We verify eligibility , prepare supporting documents and support our customers in Sainte-Thérèse , Montreal , Laval and Longueuil , as well as on the North Shore and the South Shore .
