A multi-zone system designed for Montreal plexes: consistent comfort, high performance and clean installation on a wall console
Client context and objectives
In a typical Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie plex , the owners wanted to air condition and heat several rooms spread over two levels without duct work. The challenge: ensure stable comfort in the living room, bedrooms and an office facing the courtyard, while keeping the side facade clear and quiet for the neighborhood. We offer a Gree FreeMatch R32 MultiZone heat pump , a flexible platform capable of powering 2 to 5 indoor heads of different formats (wall-mounted, low consoles, cassettes), ideal for the fabric of Montreal homes.
Why the Gree FreeMatch R32 for this project
-
R-32 refrigerant : reduced charge and better seasonal efficiency than R-410A, therefore lower bill for equal use.
-
Multi-zone capacity : each room receives the appropriate power; we handle the variable solar gains of the front/rear facades.
-
Extreme cold operating range depending on the range configurations, allowing effective additional heating in mid-season and during moderate cold.
-
Compatibility with multiple head sizes : we generally combine wall-mounted heat pumps in living areas and low consoles in bedrooms for gentle blowing .
Choice of exterior installation: side wall on brackets
The photo shows the Gree outdoor unit mounted on galvanized wall brackets to the side brick wall, above a draining paving stone. This solution meets several site requirements:
-
Snow clearance : sufficient elevation to remain operational in winter and avoid clogging by blowing snow.
-
Vibration limitation : anti-vibration pads under the supports + tightening to controlled torque = silent operation from the neighborhood to the yard.
-
Protecting traffic : by clearing the ground, the driveway remains usable and easy to clear of snow.
-
Easy HVAC maintenance : easy access for condenser washing and refrigeration measurements.
We maintain proper suction and discharge clearances around the front grille and sidewalls. Near a wire mesh fence, we add spacers if necessary to maintain the recommended airflow and prevent hot recirculation.
Refrigeration, electricity and condensate path
The sidewall allows for a short run of refrigerant lines to the indoor heads, reducing pressure drops and optimizing the system's practical SEER/HSPF . Our installation practices:
-
Controlled slope drilling , protective sheath and interior/exterior waterproofing .
-
Continuous insulation of the lines with UV tape and capping to match the masonry.
-
Code- compliant exterior disconnect box and dedicated circuit; neat routing for unobtrusiveness.
-
Condensate management : gravity evacuation of heads when geometry allows; silent condensate pump in areas where the slope is insufficient, with odor trap and anti-siphoning.
Interior configuration: distribution of zones
For this plex, we often recommend a 3-zone distribution:
-
Living area (living room/dining room): 12k to 15k BTU wall-mounted head oriented directly in the room for even diffusion .
-
Master bedroom : 9k BTU low console for gentle breeze under the window and minimal noise at night.
-
Office : 9k BTU wall head with dehumidification mode useful during humid periods.
Each indoor unit has its own thermostat/control and independent speed modulation, which allows consumption to be adapted to the actual occupancy of the rooms.
Commissioning and quality controls
After deep vacuum drawing, leak test , and checking for overheating/undercooling , we proceed to:
-
calibration of instructions by zone,
-
fan synchronization to avoid direct air currents,
-
acoustic validation: no parasitic noise (vibration, grid resonance, line whistling).
The expected result: soft start, long and stable cycles , reduction of indoor humidity in summer, and comfortable maintenance during mid-season temperature differences.
Good practices for daily use
-
Summer setting : 23–24°C to limit short cycles and maximize comfort.
-
In winter : let the heat pump work continuously at low speed; it is more efficient than on/off.
-
Open doors in the living area to promote natural stratification and the rise of treated air.
-
Filters : clean every 4 to 6 weeks during periods of intensive use.
-
Exterior clearance : Keep 60–90 cm free in front of the grill; clear leaves and snow for optimal heat exchange.
HVAC Maintenance and Longevity
AirGreen offers an annual maintenance program : cleaning the coils (evaporator/condenser), electrical inspection, refrigeration parameter checks, condensate pump tests, and seasonal programming updates. This maintenance maintains the efficiency of the FreeMatch R32 and extends its lifespan.
Specific challenges of the site and solutions chosen
-
Basement window proximity : the bracketed elevation keeps the frame area clear and prevents any hot air from flowing back into the opening.
-
Narrow driveway typical of lot separations in Rosemont: we compacted the path of the lines, chose discreet capping and planned the location to preserve the passage and access to the garden.
-
Adjacent neighborhood : setting the EU's nighttime silent mode and anti-vibration pads sized for the device's mass.
Energy efficiency and eligibility
The R-32 platform and inverter modulation allow for reduced consumption at partial load. Depending on the combination of units and the nominal performances selected (in particular the heating capacities at −25 °C on certain heads in the range), the installation may be eligible for local energy efficiency assistance programs . We always check these criteria when making the proposal and support our customers in the grant application .
What the customer gains
-
Room-by-room comfort , without overtreating unoccupied areas.
-
Quiet inside and out thanks to the silent block mounting and fine modulation.
-
Preserved aesthetics : discreet lines, compact outdoor unit and out of traffic areas.
-
Cost control : better kWh/BTU delivered ratio, especially in mid-season.
AirGreen, Greater Montreal's HVAC partner
Our team works daily in Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , on the North Shore and the South Shore . We understand the realities of alleys, narrow yards, brick walls and long winters. Our method: precise diagnosis , selection of the most consistent range (Gree, Fujitsu, Midea, Sharp, etc.), careful installation and rigorous after-sales service . For a plex in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, a house in Laval or a condo in Longueuil, we size and install your HVAC system for performance and durability.
Conclusion
Installed on brackets on the side wall, the Gree FreeMatch R32 fits perfectly into the brick architecture of Rosemont. The multi-zone distribution provides the targeted comfort sought, with contained consumption and controlled noise levels. An eco-efficient , scalable choice adapted to Montreal's buildings.
