Installation of a Gree (R-32 series) wall-mounted heat pump in Laval – Chomedey

4-season comfort in a Laval apartment building: careful installation on brackets above the balcony, complete cladding of the connections and compliant electrical connection for quiet and efficient operation.

Context: a typical Chomedey building and a need for stable comfort

In this brick plex in Chomedey (Laval) , the owner wanted to stabilize the temperature of the apartments while reducing operating costs. The constraints were clear: small footprint, narrow balconies, close neighborhoods and the need to limit vibrations transmitted to the masonry. Our recommendation was a new generation Gree R -32 wall-mounted heat pump, a recent residential range ( Livo/Clivia R-32 family depending on availability), recognized for its excellent performance/noise compromise and possible eligibility for efficiency programs when configured in a cold climate version.

Equipment selection: R-32 performance and realistic sizing

We always size the heat pump based on the surface area to be served, the insulation, and the orientation. In this home, the sensible load led us to a 9,000 to 12,000 BTU indoor unit, with an R-32 compatible outdoor unit offering:

  • high seasonal efficiency (SEER/HSPF/SCOP competitive in its category);

  • efficient heating mode down to −20°C to −25°C depending on the series configuration;

  • stable control electronics and quiet operation in continuous operation.

This sizing avoids over-equipment, reduces on/off cycles, and protects compressor longevity. We systematically select refrigerant line lengths that are compatible with the manufacturer's recommendations to maintain efficiency.

Installation details: clean, safe and designed to last

Support and positioning

  • Install the condenser on sturdy galvanized wall brackets , above the balcony railing : this frees up space, keeps the unit away from snow projections and promotes air circulation.

  • Anti-vibration pads under the base to dampen micro-vibrations and prevent transmission to the brick.

  • Respect rear and side clearances for optimal air intake, with direction of the airflow away from the balcony rest areas.

Refrigeration and finishing process

  • Insulated copper connections (refrigerants + communication) protected by a vertical beige cover matching the facade: UV protection and neat aesthetics.

  • Estimated total length of 3–4 m between indoor head and condenser, with large bend radius to protect return oil and limit pressure losses.

  • Sealed through-hole, vapor barrier restored and penetrations sealed to prevent any infiltration.

Power supply and safety

  • Exterior disconnect box within sight, labeled, allowing rapid isolation of the unit for maintenance.

  • Conductors sized according to the nominal intensity of the device, ground connection and circuit breaker dedicated to the panel.

  • Discreet cable routing in the cowling for a compliant and aesthetic installation.

Condensate management

  • Gravity drainage with a continuous slope towards the outside, outside passage areas, to avoid stagnation and the formation of ice at the edge of the balcony.

  • Discharge tip positioned to prevent droplets on lower levels.

Challenges encountered and AirGreen solutions

Limited space on the balcony
The guardrail restricted frontal access. We pre-assembled the brackets, used drilling templates, and installed the unit on safety straps to ensure precise anchoring without damaging the brick.

Neighborhood noise management
Perfect leveling and tightening of the fasteners to the correct torque reduced the risk of resonance. The nighttime "low speed" mode was set to preserve the peace and quiet of the neighbors.

Aesthetics and durability
The choice of a full cover and the color coordinated with the facade allow for discreet integration. All entry points have been silicone-coated (exterior grade) for durability.

Result: immediate comfort and controlled consumption

From the moment it was put into operation, the main room reached the set temperature continuously, without any jolts. In air conditioning mode, the variable speed improves the perceived humidity level . In auxiliary heating mode, the blowing curve remains stable below zero, ensuring consistent comfort during rapid temperature variations on the North Shore .

Good practices for use and maintenance

  • Keep the inner head clean: Wash the filters every 4–6 weeks during periods of heavy use.

  • Keep the condenser clear of any obstacles (vegetation, objects), especially in summer.

  • In winter, check the release of the condensate discharge to avoid stalactites on the lower balcony.

  • Schedule annual HVAC maintenance : pressure check, leak test, electrical inspection and deep cleaning of the evaporator/condenser.

  • Avoid lowering the setpoint too low in summer; aim for 23–24°C for an excellent comfort/energy ratio .

Grants and Compliance (Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, North Shore, South Shore)

Recent R-32 wall-mounted heat pumps , when certified for cold climates with high efficiency, may be eligible for energy efficiency incentives . Eligibility depends on the exact model, performance ratings , and current criteria. Our team systematically validates:

  • the list of accepted models ;

  • the required documents (proof of purchase, commissioning);

  • RBQ compliance and CSA electrical requirements.

AirGreen tips for installations on balconies and brick facades

  1. Height : Place the condenser above the snow line and out of the splash zone.

  2. Clearances : respect the minimum spaces around the fan and avoid any air discharge towards the neighbor's balcony.

  3. Vibrations : prefer rigid brackets with spacers and buffers.

  4. Capping : Complete capping protects the insulation, extends its lifespan and improves aesthetics.

  5. Condensates : favor gravity ; if not possible, integrate a pump with a power cut-off and maintenance access.
