Installation of a Gree (R32 series) wall-mounted heat pump in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie

A high, clean and quiet installation: the comfort advantage of a Montreal apartment

At AirGreen , we design each HVAC installation to fit our clients' homes down to the last detail. In this Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie apartment, we installed a Gree wall-mounted heat pump (new generation R-32 ) above a hallway. The result: optimal air distribution to adjacent rooms, zero footprint, and a sleek aesthetic that perfectly aligns with the existing moldings.

Client context and objectives

The client wishes to:

  • cool efficiently in summer and heat in the off-season without increasing the energy bill;

  • preserve circulation in a narrow corridor;

  • limit the visual impact of refrigeration connections and drainage.

We offer a compact Gree R-32 indoor head, very discreet and silent, combined with the shortest possible connection route to preserve efficiency and aesthetics.

Why the Gree R-32 meets the specifications

  • Energy efficiency : R-32 fluid provides better performance coefficients than an equivalent R-410A generation, therefore savings in heating and air conditioning.

  • Small footprint : The slim-profile indoor unit fits easily above a door, without obstructing opening or traffic flow.

  • Acoustic comfort : progressive ventilation and night mode for quiet operation – ideal for a Montreal apartment.

  • Simplified maintenance : filters accessible from the front; easy cleaning during annual HVAC maintenance .

  • Potential eligibility for support programs (depending on exact configuration and current criteria) thanks to the performance of a recent mural.

The location choices that make the difference

Positioning
We fix the plate at the junction of the wall and the ceiling, above the door frame. This height promotes positive stratification: the treated air flows along the ceiling then descends naturally, serving the living room and the adjoining bedroom.

Route of the connections
The drilling is located directly behind the inner head in order to:

  • reduce the length of refrigeration connections (better efficiency, less pressure losses);

  • hide almost all of the wiring inside the wall;

  • limit visible hoods inside.
    Outside, the lines follow a short, straight path to the condenser, placed on wall brackets (a standard solution in Montreal plexes/condos to free up the ground and facilitate snow removal).

Condensate management
The drainage point allows for a constant gravity slope : no lifting pump, therefore less maintenance and no additional noise. We provide an anti-odor siphon and a frost-protected outlet.

Power supply
The device is powered from the existing panel via a dedicated circuit breaker and a standard HVAC cable; the presence of an old thermostat in the hallway guided us to maintain a clean integration of the wiring passages.

Technical challenges encountered and AirGreen solutions

  1. Moldings and ceiling recess
    The area has a small formwork and moldings. We adjust the plate to respect the necessary suction clearances, use dowels adapted to the existing support and check the horizontality with a laser level.

  2. Narrow corridor and opposite doors
    To avoid any recirculation of hot/cold air in the lintel, we orient the motorized shutters in a wide sweep with a blowing stop towards the main volume. The vertical oscillation is set to cover the corridor without disturbing air currents.

  3. Invisible finish
    Inside, a white hood flush with the headboard and the upper plinth unifies the finish. Outside, we install a resistant UV line cover, ready to be painted if the client wants a tone-on-tone finish with the facade.

Sizing and recommended use

In this type of apartment in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie , the 9,000–12,000 BTU range covers the majority of the needs of a living space + adjoining bedroom (depending on insulation, orientation and windows). We configure:

  • an Auto mode to let the algorithm maintain the setpoint;

  • a Dry mode useful during humid periods to stabilize humidity;

  • hourly programming to optimize operating costs (slowing down during absences, gentle increase before returning).

Good HVAC maintenance practices to maintain performance

  • Filter cleaning : every 4 to 8 weeks during periods of intensive use; more frequently if there are animals or dust.

  • Annual visit : inspection of connections, leak test, pressure reading and washing of the indoor/outdoor coil .

  • Condenser Clearance : Maintain 30–60 cm of free clearance (snow removal in winter) to ensure heat exchange and compressor longevity.

  • Drainage check : especially in spring and late summer to avoid any build-up.

What the customer gains, from day one

  • Uniform comfort in adjacent rooms thanks to the central position of the head above the passage.

  • Low noise : the Gree R-32 operates quietly, even at night.

  • Controlled bills : high seasonal efficiency and fine regulation reduce consumption.

  • Housing valuation : a recent R-32 wall-mounted air conditioner/heat pump is a sought-after asset in Montreal.

Common mistakes… that we avoid

  • Lines too long : losses, noise and overconsumption. We favor rear drilling and short connections.

  • Lack of gravity slope : risk of overflow. Here, the drainage follows a continuous slope.

  • Undersizing or oversizing : unstable comfort and short cycles. We size according to the thermal reality of the housing, not just the surface area.

  • Unsuitable fixings : with old Montreal walls, the choice of anchors is crucial; we use certified anchors and a controlled tightening torque.

Timeframe and schedule for a typical AirGreen installation day

  1. Preparation : floor protection, location of technical passages, electrical lockout.

  2. Drilling & fixing : installation of the plate, checking clearances, waterproof sealing.

  3. Connections : calibrated flaring, controlled crimping, vacuum drawing up to the required threshold.

  4. Power up and tests : supply/return temperature measurement, drainage test, remote control setting.

  5. Provision of usage advice and HVAC maintenance plan.
