Custom-made comfort in a Rosemont plex: an interior headboard placed high, discreet, and ready for Montreal winters
Project context and objectives
In Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, we are modernizing a typical Montreal plex with a recent Gree wall-mounted heat pump using R-32 refrigerant . The goal: to achieve precise cooling in the summer and efficient low-temperature heating in the winter, while respecting the interior aesthetics and constraints of an existing building. The client was looking for a quiet , energy-efficient solution that was eligible for grant programs applicable in Greater Montreal.
Interior layout: high ceiling, close to a corner... and perfectly compliant
The interior head is installed at the top , a few centimeters from the ceiling, which optimizes the air flow and frees up wall space. The room required installation close to a corner : we therefore took care of the lateral clearances for maintenance (clearance for opening the hood and extracting the filter) and checked the air intake to prevent any hot recirculation on the ceiling.
-
Installation height : sufficient for efficient sweeping and defrosting in heating mode.
-
Side clearance : retained for periodic maintenance.
-
Vibrations : pads and fixings calibrated to protect the gypsum and avoid parasitic noise.
Condensate management: gravity priority, maximum reliability
We favor gravity condensate drainage whenever the configuration allows. Here, the crossing is at the rear of the unit, with a continuous slope and pipe insulation to prevent condensation on the walls. In the event of a future redevelopment, a compatible lifting pump can be added without redoing the head: this is provided for in our HVAC maintenance schedule.
Refrigeration path: short, clean, invisible from the room
The wall configuration allowed for a direct route to the exterior, limiting the length of the refrigeration lines . Outside, we capped the connections with discreet white capping , resistant to UV and frost. This choice reduces pressure losses, makes seasonal performance more reliable and simplifies any service intervention.
Power supply and protections
The dedicated power supply (circuit breaker calibrated according to the unit's current) complies with the Quebec Electrical Code . We systematically install:
-
Dedicated circuit breaker and panel identification,
-
Properly shielded and routed communications cable ,
-
Clearance at the condenser for the proximity switch (external), practical in case of winter maintenance.
Why Gree R-32 for this project in Montreal
The Gree R-32 wall-mounted range combines high efficiency and operating ranges adapted to our climate:
-
Low temperature heating : extreme cold versions announced down to -25°C or even -30°C depending on the model in the range.
-
Seasonal efficiency : High SEER/HSPSF/SCOP, excellent for controlling operating costs.
-
Quiet operation : multiple fan speeds and motorized shutters for consistent comfort.
-
Grant compatibility : when the configuration meets the efficiency thresholds, regional aid can apply to Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, North Shore and South Shore .
Important note: When warranted by the nameplate and room size, we size residential wall-mounted heaters between 9,000 and 24,000 BTUs depending on the envelope, orientation, glazing, and use. Here, the load calculation confirmed a capacity suitable for the daytime area without oversizing.
Immediate result: stable comfort and preserved aesthetics
Upon commissioning, the automatic sweep distributes the air without direct drafts onto the occupants. The heating mode provides a rapid temperature increase, and humidity in summer remains under control thanks to dehumidification cycles. The high installation and careful integration make the equipment almost invisible in everyday life.
Key steps in our HVAC installation on this site
1) Technical visit and load calculation
We analyze the insulation, glass surfaces, infiltrations, orientation, and uses of the room. This step ensures an adjusted BTU capacity and an acceptable noise level for actual use (office, living room, bedroom).
2) Choosing the location of the wall head
The location must allow:
-
an air sweep covering the entire room,
-
a setback from the partitions for maintenance,
-
a brief passage of the connections to limit losses,
-
gravity evacuation of condensate.
3) Drilling and fixing
We use a Gree fixing template and anchors adapted to the support (wood, brick, concrete, gypsum + reinforcement). The drilling is carefully disbursed to avoid any crushing of the insulation when passing the connections.
4) Refrigeration connection and flares
The flares are made to the prescribed torque with burr control and suitable lubrication. We carry out a deep vacuum (micron gauge) to guarantee the absence of humidity and air, then a nitrogen leak test .
5) Power on, setup and testing
After electrical checks, we configure the remote control (set temperature, speeds, shutter orientation) and validate:
-
Operating pressures and temperatures ,
-
Condensate flow in cold mode,
-
Noise and vibrations ,
-
Uniformity of ambient temperature.
HVAC Use and Maintenance Tips
-
Filters : Vacuum or wash every 4 to 8 weeks during periods of heavy use.
-
Instructions : Avoid extreme deviations; a stable instruction saves energy.
-
Winter : Clear the outdoor condenser area of snow and ice to maintain airflow.
-
Spring : schedule annual HVAC maintenance (pressure check, exchanger cleaning, condensate test, tighten connections).
-
Air quality : depending on the configuration, an air exchanger can complete the system for controlled ventilation.
Grants and eligibility in Greater Montreal
Recent R-32 wall-mounted heat pumps with high efficiency may be eligible for financial assistance in Quebec. Eligibility depends on efficiency coefficients and operating ranges . We support our clients in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore to compile files, provide proof of installation, and the required technical data sheets.

Express FAQ
Is head close to the ceiling a problem?
No, if the minimum clearance is respected. High installation promotes controlled stratification in heating and better diffusion in air conditioning.
Was a condensate pump necessary?
Not here: gravity flow is preferred for reliability and silence . However, we plan a scalable solution if the customer redesigns the room.
What BTU size should I choose?
Load calculation guides the choice. Oversizing increases short cycles and reduces comfort . Undersizing penalizes temperature rise in winter. We aim for an optimal balance .
