Sophisticated comfort in a Montreal living room: a perfectly integrated LG wall unit, quiet and ready for our winters
Project background
In Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, we are modernizing a bright living space on the ground floor of a typical Montreal duplex. The client's goal: to efficiently air-condition the living area in the summer, maintain stable heat during the off-season, and reduce the use of electric baseboard heaters. We are proposing a single-zone LG wall-mounted heat pump , sized for an open living room including a reading nook and adjoining dining room.
Equipment selection and sizing
Choosing a wall-mounted heat pump meets three requirements: efficiency, discretion, and speed of HVAC installation. Our team calibrates the capacity based on:
-
the surface area of the main area and the connecting spaces;
-
of the envelope (windows, orientation, air infiltration);
-
noise constraints (living room, TV, teleworking);
-
Montreal design temperatures.
The result: a variable-speed LG indoor head connected to an outdoor inverter compressor, with a nominal capacity corresponding to residential mains use (range of 9,000 to 15,000 BTU/h depending on the configuration chosen). This sizing guarantees high-efficiency operation at partial load and fine modulation in heating and cooling.
Interior layout: precision and integration
We position the head above the living room's visual lintel , a few centimeters from the ceiling grout and molding to promote optimal air intake and even diffusion. The unit is centered on the display wall, between two windows with light curtains; this placement:
-
avoid direct drafts on the sofa;
-
allows the flow to reach the hallway and dining room;
-
respects the manufacturer's recommended clearances (top, sides and front).
We check the alignment of the wall bracket with a laser level, then fix the plate to dowels suitable for the material. Vibrations are neutralized by buffers and tightened to the recommended torque, to ensure minimal noise .
Refrigeration path and condensate management
The selected wall faces outside, which allows for direct wall penetration behind the unit. Advantages:
-
Reduced line length (usually < 3 m), which improves efficiency;
-
Gravity drain assured: no need for a condensate pump, therefore zero additional noise and less maintenance;
-
Neat aesthetics: only a discreet exterior finishing cover protects the connection outlet.
We drill at a controlled slope (≈ 5–7°) to naturally evacuate condensates to the outside. A vapor barrier sheath and continuous insulation surround the deoxidized copper tubes flared to the correct gauge, to avoid any thermal bridges and parasitic condensation in summer.
Outdoor unit: stability, silence and durability
On the outside (backyard), the inverter compressor is installed on galvanized brackets at a safe height for winter. This configuration:
-
limits the accumulation of snow around the chassis;
-
facilitates defrost drainage;
-
reduces the transmission of vibrations to the structure.
We add anti-vibration pads , snow cutters if the exposure requires it, and adequate clearance for the air intake. The communication wiring and 240 V power supply are certified and connected to a dedicated circuit breaker, in accordance with the Quebec electrical code.
Air quality and acoustic comfort
The chosen series incorporates high-surface washable filters and a lamellar profile fan. Results:
-
maintaining cleaner air on a daily basis;
-
ultra-quiet operation at low speed, ideal for reading or teleworking in the living room;
-
night mode for automatic decrease in sound level.
We recommend light but regular HVAC maintenance : cleaning the filters every 4 to 6 weeks during the season, annual check of the condensate drain and inspection of the coil.
Control and automation
The controller was configured with:
-
differentiated day/evening instruction levels ;
-
automatic sweep to circulate the air without discomfort;
-
locking of some advanced modes (dehumidification, turbo) so that the family does not activate contradictory functions simultaneously.
Optionally, adding a Wi-Fi module allows you to schedule the restart before returning home and to view the estimated consumption.
Construction site challenges and solutions provided
1) Upper clearance. The presence of a ceiling molding required a precise offset of the plate. We adapted the vertical dimension to maintain the minimum upper clearance while maintaining a sober aesthetic above the decorative frame.
2) Through-hole near a window. To avoid any structural weakness and ensure a watertight seal, we chose an exit point between the studs with polyurethane sealant and a sleeve. The result provides a durable air barrier .
Results measured after commissioning
-
Rapid drop in indoor temperature on a sunny afternoon;
-
Stabilized humidity thanks to dry mode, beneficial for the conservation of wooden frames;
-
In the off-season, the heat pump covers the majority of heating needs, reducing the use of baseboards.
The customer notes uniform comfort in the living area and appreciates the sound discretion of the installation.
Recommended preventive maintenance
To maintain performance and warranty:
-
Cleaning the filters : once a month during the high season;
-
Annual inspection : coil, fan, condensate tray, electrical tightening;
-
Clearance of at least 60 cm around the condenser, periodic snow removal in winter;
-
Avoid any obstacles in front of the interior head (bookcase, large light fixture).
We offer HVAC maintenance plans tailored to residential needs in Montreal, Laval , Longueuil , North Shore and South Shore .
Subsidies and energy efficiency
Many certified high-efficiency wall-mounted heat pumps are eligible for assistance programs based on their cold-weather heating performance and Quebec standards. We verify the following when signing the contract:
-
the eligibility of the selected model;
-
the required documentation (serial number, proof of installation);
-
support for the application in order to maximize the financial return.

Express FAQ
Can the wall head stay above a painting?
Yes, as long as you respect the clearances and orient the shutter to avoid direct airflow onto the work. We always validate the flow path.
Do you need a condensate pump?
In most cases, no: a well-designed gravity drain is quieter, more reliable, and easier to maintain.
And winter?
Inverter technology maintains good performance down to low temperatures; for very cold weather, keep a stable setting and let the device modulate.
