A rooftop terrace installation designed to last, efficient in extreme cold and perfectly integrated into condo life
At AirGreen , we have just installed a Midea28 wall-mounted heat pump (new generation R-454B refrigerant) in a residential building in Verdun (Montreal) . The construction site presented all the typical constraints of urban condominiums: flat roof , glass walls , limited passages and strict acoustic requirements . Our team designed a neat, quiet and robust solution, while optimizing maintenance access and equipment longevity.
Why the Midea28 ticks all the boxes for a Montreal condo
The Midea28 range is known for its reliable heating down to −30°C , its ultra-fine inverter modulation and its low noise level. It is available from 9,000 to 33,000 BTU , covering the majority of condo and open-plan unit configurations. Its low GWP R-454B fluid reduces the environmental footprint compared to older generations of R-410A , while offering excellent seasonal efficiencies. For a customer, this means stable comfort all year round , energy savings and potential eligibility for grant programs when efficiency criteria are met.
Layout design: safety, airflow and silence
Support and clearances. The outdoor unit was installed on galvanized brackets at a reasonable height to clear the battery from the roof plane, improve airflow, and limit snow accumulation. Anti-vibration pads dampen micro-vibrations and contribute to silence inside the home and on the roof.
Connection routing. The refrigeration lines (liquid/gas) and the power supply were sheathed and insulated along their entire length, with UV-stable tape and evenly spaced clamps. We maintained generous bend radii at the start of the unit to protect the copper and ensure proper fluid expansion . A discreet service ring allows for maintenance without unnecessary pulling.
Flat roof protection. The connections rest on wooden joists and rigid insulation to avoid continuous contact with the roof membrane and prevent abrasion . This raised surface increases durability while maintaining free rainwater flow .
Secure power supply. In the immediate vicinity of the condenser, we installed a RBQ/CEC-compliant disconnect box (service switch type), with a waterproof flexible conduit to absorb thermal movements. The assembly is sealed to the wall, and the interior passage is caulked to maintain the thermal envelope.
Execution details that make the difference
Sealing and finishing. The openings are sealed and the exterior capping follows a clean line up to the entry point, ensuring exemplary visual integration . Inside, the wall-mounted head is positioned to circulate the air without direct drafts onto the living area.
Condensate management. The route is gravity-fed with a controlled slope, which eliminates the need for a pump and reduces maintenance. In air conditioning, the drainage is quiet and reliable.
Acoustics. On a rooftop terrace, sound reflections can amplify the disturbance. We therefore have:
-
used anti-vibration mounts,
-
directed the air discharge away from the bay windows,
-
validated the clearances to avoid the recirculation of hot air (source of noise and reduction in efficiency).
Maintenance access. The layout provides front access to the valve, electrical panel, and filters/exchangers in the indoor head. The covers can be removed without removing the piping.
Expected performance and everyday comfort
-
Reliable heating down to -30°C : ideal for Montreal winters.
-
Continuous modulation : the machine adapts its power to demand, which reduces cycles , noise and the electricity bill.
-
Effective dehumidification : in summer, drier and more comfortable air.
-
Air quality : washable filters and advanced humidity control functions contribute to indoor well-being .
For a condo in Verdun, this combination translates into consistent comfort , silence and uncompromising savings .
What we validate before commissioning
-
Nitrogen pressurization and leak test of the connections.
-
Deep vacuum (lens ≤ 500 microns) and stabilization.
-
Inverter configuration and verification of load currents .
-
Superheat/Subcool within manufacturer's range.
-
In situ acoustic testing (night/day) for sensitive co-ownerships.
-
Usage tips : set temperatures, filter maintenance, seasonal inspection plan.
Typical constraints of a flat roof… and our solutions
-
Tight spaces : compact design of the Midea28 + optimized clearances .
-
Exposure to the elements : elevation, discharge orientation, UV protected cables and copper.
-
Co-ownership regulations : technical documentation provided, noise levels checked, discreet routing.
-
Harsh winter : optimized defrost configuration, clearance under the device to avoid ice.
AirGreen Recommended HVAC Maintenance
To maintain performance and warranty:
-
Cleaning of the internal filters every 4 to 8 weeks during periods of use.
-
Annual inspection : exchanger, fans, electrical tightening, refrigerant test, probe calibration .
-
Clearances : Keep the outdoor unit free of snow/leaves (at least 30 cm around).
-
Finishing : check the capping and integrity of the UV insulation every spring.
Our AirGreen maintenance plan includes a pre-winter inspection and a weather reminder in case of extreme cold to ensure maximum uptime.
Potential Grants and Eligibility
When the Midea28 's configuration and declared performance meet the required thresholds, the project can benefit from assistance programs in Quebec. We support our clients in:
-
check eligibility (model, power, efficiency),
-
provide quotes and certificates ,
-
build the file and avoid administrative pitfalls.
Load study and power selection: our method
Our technical advisors size the machine based on:
-
the surface area and envelope of the accommodation (insulation, glazing),
-
orientation and solar gains ,
-
the occupation profile ,
-
the desired set temperatures .
This approach avoids oversizing (noise, short cycles) and undersizing (discomfort in extreme cold). The right choice of BTUs guarantees compressor longevity and expected savings .
