Installation of a Panasonic Inverter wall-mounted heat pump on a flat roof in the Southwest (Montreal)

A white membrane installation designed for silence, durability and maintenance access

At AirGreen , we are experts in HVAC installation in dense and contemporary environments. In a residential building in Southwest Montreal , our team installed a Panasonic wall-mounted heat pump – Inverter range (R-32) whose outdoor condenser is positioned on the flat roof . The objective: to offer four-season comfort to the occupants, while respecting the constraints of a modern condo complex (cohabitation, aesthetics, security, technical access).

Building context and choice of positioning

The complex features white membrane roofs (TPO/EPDM) , low parapets and an urban environment with multiple dwellings. To limit noise transmission to adjacent units and free up floor space, we chose a rooftop layout :

  • Self-supporting galvanized steel support on distribution slab : stability, load distribution and respect for the membrane.

  • Clearance under the unit : unobstructed air circulation, reduced risk of snow accumulation and easy access for maintenance.

  • Orientation of air discharges : distance from vertical obstacles and neighboring air intakes to preserve the efficiency of the heat pump .

This positioning meets both the requirements of the co-ownership syndicate and good HVAC maintenance practices in urban areas.

Technical execution details

Structure and anti-vibrations

  • Galvanized bolted frame with anti-vibration pads , limiting transmission to the slabs and parapet.

  • Fasteners adjusted to the torque recommended by the manufacturer, in order to avoid buckling of the chassis and parasitic noise in strong winds.

Refrigeration and electrical routing

  • Waterproof metal technical box (screwed cover) for junction of refrigerant lines and communication cabling .

  • Dedicated power cable with external disconnection (disconnect) compliant with RBQ/CE requirements.

  • Roof penetration via an outlet on a base and flashing compatible with the white membrane; mastication + sealing strip to ensure airtightness and durability.

Clearance management and maintenance

  • Clearances around air inlet/outlet faces according to Panasonic minimum clearances .

  • Service walkway and secure access path for maintenance visits, to ensure rapid after-sales service by our teams.

Equipment: Panasonic Inverter (R-32)

The Panasonic wall-mounted heat pump installed here belongs to the Inverter family operating on R-32 . We favor this range for:

  • High energy efficiency thanks to the inverter compressor (fine power modulation).

  • Cold weather performance adapted to Montreal's climate; maintaining comfort in winter and quiet air conditioning in summer.

  • Manufacturer reliability and availability of replacement parts.

  • R-32 refrigerant , with lower global warming potential than R-410A, in line with our commitments to responsible HVAC installation .

Depending on the thermal load of the dwelling and the insulation, the typical power target for this type of condo is around 9,000 to 18,000 BTU for a main zone. We always size the power based on a load calculation (surface area, orientation, glazing, infiltration, floor, internal gains).

Key stages of the project (AirGreen method)

  1. Technical survey : roof access, condition of the membrane, existing routing, distance to the electrical panel, union constraints.

  2. Sizing : Selection of Panasonic Inverter (R-32) indoor and outdoor unit according to the calculated load and occupancy profile.

  3. Roof preparation : installation of the distribution slab and the galvanized support , marking of clearances.

  4. Refrigeration installation : drawing of insulated lines towards the indoor unit, nitrogen brazing , leak test and high vacuum .

  5. Electricity : dedicated circuit , appropriate circuit breaker , external disconnect and polarity/ground check.

  6. Commissioning : reading of pressures , air temperatures and intensities , calibration of parameters, heating and air conditioning testing.

  7. Customer provided with : operating instructions (defrosting, filtration, auto mode), HVAC maintenance plan and warranties.

Special features of flat roof installation

Installing a heat pump on a flat roof requires specific attention:

  • Membrane protection : no perforation without approved flashing ; use of rubber tiles/feet when required to avoid punching.

  • Water management : winter defrosting → water must drain into the drains; we check the slopes and move the unit away from accumulations .

  • Snow and frost : sufficient chassis height and blower clearance to prevent cold air recirculation and frost alarms .

  • Wind : controlled tightening, orientation and, if necessary, anti-lift devices (depending on the local wind zone and building height).

Result: comfort, silence and visual integration

The Panasonic condenser blends into the roof's technical equipment. Inside, the wall-mounted head serves the main living area: inverter modulation stabilizes the temperature, limits starts/stops and reduces electricity consumption . In summer, dehumidification improves the perceived air quality; in winter, maintaining heating reduces dependence on auxiliary heaters.

Grants and eligibility (depending on configuration)

High-efficiency R-32 wall-mounted heat pumps , when they meet recognized performance thresholds and cold weather operating ranges , may be eligible for certain assistance programs in Quebec. Our team systematically validates eligibility on a case-by-case basis, gathers the documents , and supports you until filing .

Maintenance recommended by AirGreen

Rigorous HVAC maintenance maximizes lifespan and performance:

  • Cleaning and inspection of the indoor unit filters (every 4 to 8 weeks depending on use).

  • Annual check of the outdoor unit on the roof: fixings, level of the frame, condition of the fins , drainage of defrost water , insulation of the lines, tightening of the electrical connections.

  • Clearances : Keep the unit free of debris (leaves, blown snow) and do not obstruct the air faces.

AirGreen offers maintenance plans tailored to condominiums, including group visits to reduce roof access costs.

Pitfalls to avoid (feedback)

  • Undersize the power for a very sunny top floor → risk of lack of capacity during heatwaves.

  • Forgetting the defrost drain on the roof → frozen puddles and cold air intake through the unit.

  • Denying union constraints (work hours, access path, roof traffic) → avoidable delays and rework.

  • Roughly level the chassis → vibrations and premature wear of the fan bearings.

With our methodology, we deliver a sustainable installation that respects the building, the occupants and the announced energy performance .
