Installation of a Sharp (R-32 extreme cold range) wall-mounted heat pump in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie

An outdoor installation on brackets, protected and silent, designed for urban life

In a typical plex in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie , Montreal , our client wanted to replace a seasonal air conditioner with a four-season wall-mounted heat pump , capable of providing reliable heating in the winter and gentle cooling in the summer, without encroaching on the circulation space of the backyard. We propose a recent Sharp solution using R-32 (A2L) refrigerant , chosen for its performance in cold climates, its low noise level and its compactness. The site has a concrete lintel with a roof overhang, adjacent brick masonry and a sliding patio door: all constraints that require a clean, structured and secure installation.

Why Sharp R-32 for this urban project

  • 4-season efficiency : inverter compressor and optimized R-32 exchanger for high COP/SCOP and heating stability at low temperatures, a key element in Montreal.

  • Controlled acoustics : fan with a wide design and rigid casing limiting vibration transmission, ideal for close proximity.

  • Easy maintenance : easy access to service components, waterproof cover and defrosting management designed for Quebec winters.

  • Reduced Footprint : R-32 improves efficiency and lowers GWP compared to R-410A.

  • Co-ownership compatibility : clear electrical nomenclature, easy-to-lock external disconnector , and simple aesthetics.

Model note: The installed unit is from the recent Sharp wall-mounted R-32 (extreme cold) range . The exact model is not mentioned here, as the final selection was made after load calculations and site constraints.

Site Reading and HVAC Installation Strategy

Our technicians prioritize three areas: mechanical safety , silence and durability .

Installation on brackets
The condenser is mounted on galvanized wall brackets , with anti-vibration pads visible under the unit's feet. This choice:

  • frees up the floor (no clutter in the passageway);

  • elevates equipment above water spray and frost;

  • reduces transmission to the terrace floor.

Natural protection and element management
The existing roof overhang provides partial shelter from rain and snow; we nevertheless maintain adequate clearance for blowing and suction so as not to penalize defrosting.

Refrigerated and electrical route
The insulated refrigeration lines run to the right of the unit, under covers (capping) and corner boxes ensuring a clean finish and UV sealing. A disconnect switch is installed nearby, on the wall, to make work safer. The communication/power cable follows the same route as the connections, for clear reading and easy maintenance.

Length and pressure losses
The building configuration allows for a short run , limiting the equivalent length to approximately 5–8 m depending on the position of the interior head. We remain within the range that maximizes efficiency, minimizes vibrations in the walls and facilitates the evacuation of condensates on the interior side.

Key steps in installing AirGreen

  1. Marking and anchors : laser markings, drilling at the correct center distance, certified anchors for solid support (concrete/solid wall). Level check for defrosting condensate management.

  2. Mounting the brackets : tightening to the torque, load control, installation of the navy blue silent blocks .

  3. Installing the condenser : checking clearances (suction/blowing), checking spacings with respect to the patio door.

  4. Refrigeration connections : calibrated flares, torque measurement , nitrogen tests (pressure test).

  5. Vacuum drawing : objective < 500 microns , stability > 10 minutes.

  6. Opening the valves and charging the circuit, reading the pressures/temperatures.

  7. Power supply : dedicated circuit , circuit breaker sized to the panel, installation of the external disconnector .

  8. Functional tests : delta-T measurement, front noise control and nighttime silent mode adjustment.

  9. Finishing touches : watertight and tidy capping , sealed bulkheads, instructions for use given to the customer.

Condensate management and Montreal winter

Even if the photo illustrates the outdoor unit , the internal management of condensates is the subject of specific attention: we favor gravity flow from the wall head thanks to a sufficient height reserve; if the slope is insufficient, we integrate a silent mini-pump with non-return valve.
Outside, the high installation prevents snow from accumulating under the unit and facilitates drainage during defrost cycles. If necessary, we add a deflector to direct the air from narrow passage areas.

Capacity sizing and selection

The building is a brick plex with living rooms opening onto the courtyard. After calculating the load (surface area, orientation, infiltration, insulation level), the usual capacity range chosen for this type of space is between 9,000 and 18,000 BTU per person, depending on the configuration. We take care to avoid oversizing , which causes short cycles and discomfort, and to maintain heating at −20/−25 °C depending on the Sharp range chosen.

Result: comfort, silence and aesthetics

  • Low noise : silent blocks + night mode = low noise impact for the yard and neighbors.

  • Performance : short lines, rigorous vacuum, sealed passages = long-lasting performance.

  • Aesthetics : matching corner boxes and capping , grouped cables, straight installation with a cord.

  • Maintenance access : accessible disconnect switch, clearances respected, internal head filter easy to remove.

Recommended HVAC maintenance

  • Filter cleaning : every 4–8 weeks during intensive periods.

  • Exchanger and condensate tank cleaning : annual HVAC maintenance by our technicians.

  • Winter inspection : Check for free drainage of defrost and clear snow around the unit.

  • Electrical checks : tightening connections, testing disconnector, checking insulation.

Traps observed in dense environments (and how we avoid them)

  • Undersized anchors in old concrete: we use certified anchors and test the traction.

  • Blowing hindered by nearby walls: orientation and clearances are calculated, even if it means adapting the height of the brackets.

  • Poorly managed condensate on the interior side: controlled slope, vapor barrier sleeve at the crossings, pump only if necessary.

  • Disorderly visible wiring : grouped routes, UV ducts and winding radii respected.

Grants and support

Recent R-32 and high-efficiency heat pumps may be eligible for assistance under current programs. Our team guides each client to verify eligibility and prepare the file for the entire Greater Montreal area: Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , North Shore and South Shore .

Time and coordination

  • Technical visit : readings, co-ownership validation if necessary.

  • Installation : a typical day for a single-head wall-mounted heat pump with electricity.

  • Commissioning : same day, with delivery of measurement reports and instructions.
