Precise comfort, silence and careful diffusion under the ceiling: a Sharp wall head perfectly integrated into an apartment in the Plateau
At AirGreen , we have just completed the installation of a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump ( ZU1 range, R-32 refrigerant) in a typical Plateau-Mont-Royal apartment. The client's objective was clear: to optimize the heating and cooling of a large living room located under a close ceiling, without compromising on aesthetics or noise levels . The Sharp indoor head we installed meets these requirements thanks to its Inverter technology , precise air treatment and high-efficiency filters.
Context of the locations and choice of location
The apartment has a common configuration for Montreal plexes: longitudinal room, limited usable height near the ceiling, transverse circulation. We positioned the unit at the top of the wall , as close as possible to the ceiling, to maximize stratification in heating mode and free up wall space. This placement ensures:
-
even diffusion along the room, thanks to the motorized horizontal shutter ;
-
the absence of direct blowing on the seating areas;
-
a clean visual integration on the ochre-colored wall, the white bodywork emphasizing a clean finish.
The through-hole was made with a constant outward slope to allow gravity drainage of condensate—the most reliable and quiet solution when the architecture allows it. The refrigeration connections are run short and straight (estimated at 2 to 2.5 m ), limiting pressure losses. A white UV cover protects the insulation on the outside; inside, the passage is hidden behind the unit for a sleek aesthetic.
Why the Sharp ZU1 range for Plateau-Mont-Royal
-
High efficiency inverter (R-32) : fine modulation of power to maintain the target temperature with controlled consumption .
-
Quiet operation : the indoor unit is distinguished by a low noise level , ideal for teleworking and reading.
-
Advanced air treatment : multi-stage filtration and Sharp's own Plasmacluster technology (reduction of particles and allergens), highly valued in urban housing sensitive to air quality.
-
Performance in extreme cold : reliable heating during Montreal winters, avoiding the need for costly backups.
-
Simple design : straight lines, discreet display, adjustable shutters to prevent drafts on the occupants.
Key steps in our HVAC installation
-
Load study and location
Analysis of the envelope, internal contributions and use of the room. Target capacity ≈ 12,000 BTU/h retained in view of thermal gains/losses and the volume to be treated. -
Installation of the plate and tracing
Rigorous leveling to ensure gravity flow . Check clearances around the device to preserve air intake . -
Controlled drilling and crossing
Clean drilling with sealing sleeve ; outward slope for the drain. Edge protection to prevent micro-cracking of the coating. -
Routing of refrigeration connections
Continuously insulated annealed copper, controlled bend radii and abrasion-resistant collars. Service loop left near the condenser to simplify future work. -
Connection, vacuuming and controls
Deep vacuum , leak test, overheating/subcooling control, blowing temperature and flow measurement. -
Calibration and commissioning
Setting of seasonal modes and sweeping ; initial instructions explained to the customer (winter 20–21°C , summer 22–23°C to optimize comfort and bill).
Execution details visible on the project
-
Compact wall head mounted on the ceiling, side lights and uniform front for clean integration on the colored wall.
-
Wide supply louver , adjusted to fit the ceiling and project air far without direct draft.
-
Secure gravity drain , external outlet protected against frost; no pump required, therefore zero additional noise .
-
Short, protected connections ; careful sealing at the crossings to prevent any entry of parasitic air.
Results obtained
-
Rapid temperature rise in winter and stability without marked on/off cycles.
-
In summer, precise air conditioning with reduced humidity during peaks.
-
Silent operation allows the living room to be used as a workspace.
-
Improved air quality and a softer feeling of freshness thanks to ceiling diffusion.
Recommended HVAC maintenance
-
Filters : cleaning/vacuuming every 4 to 8 weeks (more frequent if there are animals or dust).
-
Outdoor condenser : 45–60 cm clearance all around; clear snow and leaves.
-
Annual AirGreen visit : check of pressures , exchanger efficiency , drain , flaps and update of settings.
-
Best practices : avoid extreme setpoint deviations; use Dry mode in humid mid-season; keep interior doors open for even distribution .
Pitfalls to avoid in similar accommodations
-
Undersizing in long parts: favor precise sizing to avoid constant full load operation.
-
Siphon paths for the drain: risk of stagnation and odors; a continuous slope is essential.
-
External supports too low : exposure to snow and ice; provide raised support or wall brackets .
-
Dark capping on a light facade : prefer a UV-resistant white capping for discretion and durability.
Grants and support
Thanks to its high efficiency and its capacity for heating in extreme cold , the Sharp ZU1 range is generally eligible for grant programs for heat pumps in Quebec. We support our customers in Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , North Shore and South Shore for the preparation of parts and validation of eligibility .
Why team up with AirGreen?
Our approach combines rigorous sizing , careful execution and after-sales service . In the Plateau-Mont-Royal, this installation illustrates our ability to exploit ceiling constraints , to take care of invisible details (slopes, waterproofing, equivalent lengths) and to deliver discreet and lasting four-season comfort .
