An outdoor unit designed for the Montreal climate, installed cleanly and sustainably

At AirGreen , we have just completed the installation of a Sharp ZU1 series wall-mounted heat pump in a duplex in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie (Montreal) . Housing context and performance objectives

The owner wanted to modernize his comfort without increasing his energy bill. He was looking for:

We fixed the condenser on galvanized wall brackets , with integrated silentblocs (the blue pads visible under the feet ensure vibration isolation). This assembly has several advantages:

  • Ground clearance (~35 cm) to drain defrost water in winter and prevent debris accumulation.

  • Protection against snow and projections during snow removal.

  • Reduction of sound transmission to the slab.

Under the unit, we installed a bed of white draining stones : water seeps quickly, limiting the formation of ice and dirt around the unit. The location respects the side and rear clearances required for air circulation. We also trimmed the vegetation in the immediate vicinity and left a seasonal maintenance instruction so that the foliage does not obstruct the exchanger.

Finishing the connections: cleanliness, durability and safety

  • Refrigerant lines : high-density UV insulation, sleeved and black taped up to the wall pass-through . The exposed horizontal section is protected by a front cover/capping for a clean finish and better weather resistance.

  • Power Supply : Service box near unit for maintenance isolation, wiring to prescribed gauge and local code.

  • Condensate management on the interior side**: gravity flow is preferred towards the exterior; on the exterior unit side, the defrost water falls directly onto the bed of stones, avoiding any stagnation against the foundation.

Sizing and recommended use

The chosen configuration targets the main living area of ​​the home (semi-open living room/kitchen). For a 12,000 to 15,000 BTU appliance, the ZU1 series effectively covers:

  • Cooling of rooms from 400 to 700 sq. ft. depending on the thermal envelope.

  • Supplementary heating in mid-season and winter support during moderate periods, with switchover to the main system if necessary in very cold weather.

Our load calculation incorporated orientation, duplex insulation, existing ventilation, and occupancy patterns. The result: sufficient reserve capacity for summer peaks, without oversizing (which would adversely affect the humidification/drying rate and defrost cycle ).

Commissioning: protocols and checks

Our certified technicians systematically carry out:

  1. Nitrogen test and leak test of connections.

  2. High vacuum to microns with recorder, then stabilization .

  3. Opening the fluid and checking the fan pressures/timings .

  4. Acoustic control at different levels.

  5. Calibration of the shutters and verification of the direction of air flow inside.

  6. Basic programming (times/comfort) with the client.

To maintain the performance of the heat pump :

  • Clear vegetation 30–60 cm around and above the unit.

  • Gently rinse the outdoor coil 1–2 times per season (without a pressure washer).

  • Clear snow in winter, keeping a clear air passage ; do not pile snow banks against the unit.

  • Clean the inner head filters every 4 to 8 weeks during periods of heavy use.

  • Schedule annual HVAC maintenance : check pressures, sensors, fans and electrical tightening.

Pitfalls to avoid when installing outdoors

  • Device too low : accumulation of snow and ice on the casing, disrupted defrost cycles.

  • Uncontrolled vegetation : leaves on the grid, loss of air flow, overconsumption.

  • Long and tortuous connections : pressure losses, poorly returned oil.

  • Lack of service box : complicated maintenance and non-compliance.
