Installation of a Sharp ZU1 series wall-mounted heat pump in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie

Controlled comfort in a Rosemont plex with thick walls
In a typical Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie apartment, we are installing a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump (ZU1 series, R-32) to stabilize the temperature in a large, southwest-facing living area. The challenge: a long load- bearing wall where the indoor unit must be located near the ceiling corner, while the exit point to the outside is at the opposite end , near the patio door leading to a balcony. Our goal: a neat, discreet and quiet path , while preserving the aesthetics of the living room and access to the furniture.

What we have achieved, step by step

Inner head positioning

The Sharp wall-mounted head is installed at the top of the wall, above the back of the sofa , away from the occupants to avoid direct airflow while still covering the entire length of the room. This placement exploits the natural stratification under the ceiling: the treated air runs along the wall then sweeps across the open area , before returning by gentle convection.

Route the connections: long, straight and clean

  • Continuous white cladding laid in a horizontal line under the ceiling, with a very slight slope towards the outside for the gravity drain .

  • Estimated total distance ≈ 4 to 5 m to the drilling area near the patio door.

  • Large bending radii in the corners to protect the insulation from refrigeration connections and preserve efficiency .

  • Spaced and regular fixings : the capping remains straight despite the joints in the concrete ceiling, for a minimal and elegant finish.

  • Single hole behind the terminal drop , weatherstripping sleeve and polyurethane sealing on the exterior side.

Why we avoid the mini-pump here
The gravity drain is possible thanks to the slope of the capping; it eliminates the additional noise and maintenance required by a mini-pump. As a result, the noise level in the living room remains extremely low, even in the evening.

Exterior management (brick balcony)

Outside, the condenser is placed out of the way of traffic on the balcony, with proper clearances for intake and exhaust. Anti-vibration pads mechanically decouple the unit, limiting transmission to the metal elements of the railing and the masonry. The brown or white casing (depending on the facade) protects the UV connections and blends in with the typical brickwork of the area.

Why the Sharp ZU1 for this project

  • R-32 refrigerant : reduced charge and better volumetric efficiency compared to older generations.

  • Modular inverter : the machine lasts a long time at low speed ; this maintains a comfortable humidity in summer and a stable temperature in winter.

  • Quiet : The scroll and interior fan design limit turbulence near the ceiling—essential when the unit is directly above the sofa.

  • Air quality : high-performance filtration and wide sweeping that homogenizes the air in a long living room like this one.

Sizing & expected performance

In an open-plan Rosemont plex (concrete ceiling, brick exterior wall, large bay window), the target power range is between 12,000 and 18,000 BTU depending on the sunlight and actual insulation. The Sharp ZU1 family covers these powers with deep modulation , avoiding on/off cycles and ensuring an advantageous COP in mid-season as well as during the cold of January.

AirGreen execution details that make the difference

Waterproofing and cleanliness

  • Waterproof sealing on the inside/outside, air barrier foam and clean collar to prevent drafts and moisture bridges.

  • Planned defrosting management : the flow is directed so as not to obstruct movement on the balcony and prevent ice formation.

Electricity & Compliance

  • Dedicated circuit from the panel, gauge adjusted to the nominal currents of the machine, circuit breaker marked .

  • Disconnect box accessible near the condenser, grounding verified.

  • Compliance with co-ownership requirements (work time slots, location, noise).

Rigorous commissioning

  • Nitrogen pressure test , deep vacuum and stabilization; release of the load according to the installed lengths.

  • Superheat/subcooling checks, reading of blowing deviations , checking of sound levels .

  • Remote control settings (Auto/Cool/Heat/Dry modes), recommended instructions and scanning adjustment to cover the dining area.

Result for the occupants

  • Fast cooling in summer, without direct draft on the sofa.

  • Efficient additional heating that reduces the use of electric baseboards in winter.

  • Silence : The absence of a mini-pump and the modulation of the ZU1 make the device almost imperceptible during quiet evenings.

  • Aesthetics : perfectly aligned capping and a clean exterior outlet; no cables disrupt the wall line.

HVAC Maintenance: Simple and Essential

  • Filters : rinse monthly during periods of heavy use; dry completely before replacing.

  • Batteries (evaporator/condenser): annual gentle cleaning to maintain heat exchange and prevent odors.

  • Inspection visits : verification of the torque of the flare fittings after the first winter-summer cycle , inspection of the condition of the capping and the wall passage.

  • External clearance : keep 30–40 cm around the condenser, especially on the discharge side.

AirGreen usage tips for a long room

  • Direct the sweep so that the air jet follows the upper wall; this pushes the treated air to the end of the room, then it falls back down naturally.

  • In summer, choose 23–24°C and, on hot days, use Dry mode to improve comfort without overcooling.

  • In winter, maintain a stable setting (20–21°C): the heat pump modulates and avoids energy-consuming surges.

  • Keep the capping clear (no shelves hanging at its height) to preserve ceiling ventilation and facilitate interventions.

Grants and Eligibility

New generation R-32 wall-mounted heat pumps , such as the Sharp ZU1 series , are often eligible for incentives based on their SEER2/HSPF2 and extreme cold performance. We verify the most favorable model/power combination during the quote and prepare the documentation for your procedures in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, North Shore and South Shore .

Why entrust your project to AirGreen?
