A clean and quiet upgrade for a Montreal living room, designed for four-season comfort
Context and objectives of the project
In a typical Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie apartment, our client wanted to modernize its comfort without compromising the aesthetics of the living room. The solution chosen: a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump (ZU1 series, R-32 refrigerant) , chosen for its performance in cold climates, its quiet sound and its compact design that fits above the bay window.
Why the Sharp ZU1 series for Montreal
-
High efficiency and stable operation in cold weather – an asset for Montreal winters.
-
R-32 technology , more efficient and lower GWP than R-410A.
-
Quiet operation : ideal for an open living room where people talk and watch television.
-
Filtration and air quality : integrated purification modules from the Sharp range that limit fine dust, useful in urban environments.
Location and integration into the living room
The interior head is installed in the upper part , in line with the textured ceiling, near the main window. This positioning favors:
-
even diffusion along the glass facade, limiting cold areas in winter;
-
optimized airflow thanks to the motorized shutter;
-
preservation of curtains and rod, adjusted to maintain clearance around the air outlet.
Good to know: we always leave a margin around the blowing facade to avoid any obstructions (curtains, lamppost, moldings). Here, a slight reframing of the tiebacks was enough to guarantee the airflow.
Refrigeration connection route and condensate management
-
Through-hole (Ø 65 mm) on the back of the head, with controlled slope angle for gravity drainage of condensate — no additional pump, therefore less maintenance and less noise.
-
Estimated total length of connections: approximately 2.5 to 3 m to the exterior wall, with continuous insulation.
-
Discreet light-colored cladding along the top of the wall to protect the connections and maintain a clean finish.
-
Interior/exterior sealing ensured (closed cell foam + sealant), preventing any passage of parasitic air.
Electrical connection and compliance
-
Dedicated circuit compliant with the Quebec Electrical Code , circuit breaker calibrated according to the Sharp outdoor unit nameplate.
-
Clean routing of communication cable and drain, separated from power conductors for reliability.
-
Grounding checked and insulation tests carried out before commissioning.
External support and protection (exterior of the housing)
Although the photo is of the inner head, the complete installation includes:
-
the outdoor unit placed on anti-vibration supports (or wall brackets depending on the facade), with clearances respected;
-
snow shield and blast clearance to limit winter accumulation;
-
valves drawn to vacuum (< 500 microns) and leak test before opening the fluid.
Commissioning and adjustments
-
Vacuum drawing , vacuum holding control and fluid release.
-
Reading temperatures and pressures in cooling and heating modes.
-
Airflow calibration : orientation of the vanes to cover the living area without direct airflow onto the seating area.
-
Quiet room acoustic measurement : the unit remains at a low level, compatible with TV/reading use.
Result: four-season comfort, better controlled bill
-
In summer , the rapid lowering of the temperature is achieved without draft zones, thanks to the high positioning close to the bay.
-
In mid-season and winter , the heat pump function supports the main heating, reducing cycles and energy used.
-
The customer benefits from cleaner air thanks to filtration and optimized consumption via eco modes and programming.
Recommended Preventive Maintenance (by AirGreen)
-
Clean filters every 4 to 6 weeks during heavy use.
-
Annual maintenance : inspection of connections, washing of evaporator/condenser, drain check, performance check.
-
Minimum clearance of 1 m in front of the unit: avoid lampshades, tall furniture and curtains in contact with the air outlet.
Subsidies and energy efficiency
The high-efficiency wall-mounted heat pump (R-32, cold weather performance) may be eligible for assistance programs in Quebec depending on the power, SCOP/HSPF, and current criteria. We validate each file's compatibility with provincial/local programs and prepare the necessary supporting documents.
