Two zones, one impeccable finish: mastered comfort in a modern riverside condo
At AirGreen , we have just installed two Sharp outdoor units (ZU1 range, R-32 refrigerant) at the foot of a white plaster wall, on the terrace of a modern condo in Nuns' Island . The client's objective: to obtain independent heating and air conditioning for two living rooms, with clean, quiet and durable integration despite a limited outdoor space and the terrace's waterproofing to be preserved.
Client context and needs
The condo benefits from large patio doors facing southwest. In summer, solar gain is significant; in winter, the river wind accentuates the feeling of cold. The need expressed is twofold:
-
maintain a stable 22–23°C in the open-plan living room-kitchen;
-
provide a self-contained area for the master bedroom, so you can sleep cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter without overheating the rest of the home.
We therefore proposed two Sharp ZU1 monosplit systems (one wall head per zone), a solution offering redundancy, regulation precision and flexibility of use.
Why the Sharp ZU1 (R-32) range for a condo in Nuns' Island?
The Sharp ZU1 range is one of the latest wall-mounted heat pumps that runs on R-32 , a fluid with a lower GWP than R-410A. It is distinguished by:
-
cold weather heating performance (down to −25/−30°C depending on capacity) suitable for Greater Montreal;
-
high efficiency thanks to the inverter compressor and Sharp power electronics;
-
quiet operation (reduced noise levels both indoors and outdoors);
-
frequent eligibility for grants when capacity and performance criteria are met;
-
a sober aesthetic that fits in with the contemporary architecture of the condominiums of Île-des-Sœurs.
Site survey and preparation
Before installation, we carried out:
-
electrical survey (panel, locations of dedicated 240 V circuit breakers, cable routes);
-
checking the terrace membrane (slabs/paving stones on protective layer) to avoid any punching;
-
measurement of clearances around future units: optimized rear clearance , lateral withdrawal to facilitate maintenance, sufficient height for snow evacuation and good air intake.
Supports and installation: stability, anti-vibration and respect for surfaces
The two condensers are placed on raised and anchored aluminum bases , equipped with blue anti-vibration pads . This solution:
-
limits the transmission of vibrations to the building and surrounding area;
-
maintains useful ground clearance for condensate and snow drainage;
-
distributes the load in order to preserve the terrace (protection under the plates during drilling and waterproof sealing).
The units are aligned along the exterior wall to maintain straight forward airflow and facilitate seasonal maintenance.
Refrigerant connections and drilling: short routes, clean finishes
Each system has a direct route through the wall (approx. 1.2 to 1.8 m of visible connections on the outside):
-
white UV capping to match the facade, stainless steel screws, waterproof end caps;
-
wall penetration carried out with sleeve , fire-resistant foam and controlled slope to prevent any infiltration ;
-
gravity drain from the interior heads, with dedicated outlet and insulated sheath to the foot of the supports (no condensate pump required here).
Interior: finely tuned comfort
The interior wall heads are installed to best cover the volumes:
-
living room/kitchen : high position, clear airflow onto the open area;
-
bedroom : layout avoiding any direct blowing on the bed, programmed night mode.
The remote control for each zone allows independent control ; the user adapts the setting according to occupancy, which reduces consumption while increasing comfort.
AirGreen Installation and Commissioning Procedure
Our certified methodology ensures sustainability and performance:
-
Bending and crimping of copper tubes; silver soldering if necessary.
-
Nitrogen test at 550 psi (check for no pressure drop).
-
Deep vacuum to ≤ 500 microns with vacuum holding.
-
Factory R-32 charge opening , additional weight if required by overall length.
-
Electrical connection to dedicated circuit breakers and accessible external disconnect boxes .
-
Commissioning : checking currents , overheating/subcooling , interior delta T , fan calibration (Auto/Quiet modes).
-
Instructions for use given to the customer and scheduling of the maintenance visit .
Specific challenges and solutions provided
-
Preserving the waterproofing of the terrace : use of plates with interposition of protective membranes , controlled drilling and polyurethane grouting around the anchors.
-
Structural noise : installation of anti-vibration pads under each foot, tightening to the recommended torque, checking with a sound level meter in heating mode.
-
Rendered facade : through sleeve and flush capping to avoid micro-cracks and maintain a clean finish around the holes.
Result: performance, silence and aesthetics
The customer now enjoys four-season comfort :
-
efficient heating even during cold spells on the riverbank;
-
even cooling without annoying drafts;
-
controlled consumption thanks to the inverter and zone management ;
-
minimal noise pollution on the terrace and for the neighborhood.
HVAC Maintenance: Our Recommendations for Longevity
To maintain high performance, we offer an HVAC maintenance plan :
-
cleaning the internal filters every 4–6 weeks during periods of heavy use;
-
gentle washing of the external fins in spring (without high pressure), visual inspection of the cappings and supports;
-
annual check by AirGreen: pressures, intensities, sealing, parameter updates, defrosting checks;
-
30–45 cm clearance around the units, distance from bins and objects to preserve air intake .
Grants and Compliance
When the required capacity and performance indices are met, the Sharp ZU1 (R-32) range can meet the criteria of grant programs in effect in Quebec. We support our customers in verifying eligibility and preparing the file . All our installations comply with RBQ/CSA standards , and the manufacturer's warranty is validated by professional commissioning .
Expert advice for condominiums in Greater Montreal
-
Favor two monosplits for two rooms with different uses: better comfort and redundancy in the event of maintenance in one area.
-
Raised supports with pads : essential for the peace of mind of neighbors and the durability of the facade and terrace.
-
Short connection routes : fewer losses, optimized efficiency , more careful finishing.
-
Schedule maintenance in spring and fall to anticipate weather peaks.
