Installation of a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump in Le Sud-Ouest (Montreal)

A discreet addition that transforms the comfort of a Montreal condo

At AirGreen , we have just equipped a condo in the Le Sud-Ouest district with a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump . Installed above the living room patio door, the unit blends seamlessly into a bright interior and optimizes four-season comfort without encroaching on the living space.

Why the Sharp ZU1 for an urban condo

The Sharp ZU1 series perfectly meets the needs of Montreal condominiums: high efficiency, low noise level and uniform air diffusion. Coupled with inverter technology , it modulates the power to maintain a stable temperature while reducing electricity consumption. The result: air conditioning in summer and efficient heating in winter , with measurable savings on the bill.

Key assets:

  • High efficiency in low temperature heating mode (Montreal climate);

  • Wide and directional blowing to cover the open living room-kitchen area;

  • Smooth start and quiet operation – valuable in condominiums;

  • Improved filtration for consistent air quality .

Sizing and choice of location

The heart of this project: positioning the interior head to maximize air circulation while preserving aesthetics.

  • Room treated: open living/dining room area adjoining the kitchen;

  • Retained capacity: 12,000 BTU — adapted to the volume and solar gains of the condo;

  • Installation height: approx. 2.3 m to promote the Coanda effect and avoid cold areas near the floor;

  • Flow direction: main shutter oriented towards the living area and the kitchen island to cover the occupied areas.

The wall directly opening onto the balcony makes a short and discreet wall crossing possible — ideal for limiting pressure losses and facilitating maintenance.

Technical details of the HVAC installation

Our HVAC teams have applied best practices for a durable installation that complies with co-ownership rules:

  • Machine type: wall-mounted heat pump (mini-split one zone);

  • Refrigerated route: back-to-back configuration, 2 to 3 m lines;

  • Drilling: Ø 65 mm core with waterproof grommet and vapor barrier;

  • Condensates: gravity drainage to the outside (controlled slope);

  • Exterior finish: white UV capping matching the woodwork, stainless steel screws;

  • Outdoor unit: placed on the balcony , high-density anti-vibration pads to reduce sound transmission;

  • Electricity: dedicated circuit breaker, shielded communication cabling, torque tightening;

  • Commissioning: vacuum < 500 microns, leak test , subcooling/superheat reading and current verification.

Co-ownership context: standards and silence above all

In a condominium building, every detail counts:

  • Compliance with the pensions and sizes required by the union for the external unit;

  • Noise management : selection of location away from bedrooms and neighbors, dampers and oscillation control;

  • Defrost water management : controlled flow onto the balcony to avoid any nuisance.

These precautions ensure discreet operation and a peaceful neighborhood .

Winter/summer performance and expected savings

The heat pump covers the majority of mid-season and mild winter heating needs, reducing the use of the existing electric convector. In summer, the air conditioning maintains a stable temperature without drafts thanks to the multi-position motorized shutter.

Concrete benefits:

  • Reduction in annual electricity consumption ;

  • Regular thermal comfort in the open area;

  • Improved air quality through filtration and renewal by controlled infiltration.

HVAC Maintenance: Ensuring Longevity

Regular HVAC maintenance extends the life of the equipment and maintains its performance:

  • Cleaning the internal filters every 8 to 12 weeks;

  • Annual washing of the exchanger, fan housing and condensate tray;

  • Inspection of flare fittings , electrical and refrigerant measurements;

  • Seasonal check of condensate drainage and capping.

Our AirGreen maintenance plans include these operations and a detailed report after each visit.

Grants and administrative support

Several programs in Quebec encourage the adoption of high-efficiency heat pumps . Depending on the configuration and current criteria, the owner may be eligible for useful financial assistance to reduce the initial investment. We take care of the pre-verification and assembly of supporting documents for Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, North Shore and South Shore .

What we learned from this project in the Southwest

  • Perfect integration into a living room with patio door: discretion, effective diffusion;

  • Short refrigeration path : minimized losses, increased efficiency;

  • Condo-friendly : silence, aesthetics and respect for co-ownership rules.
