Installation of a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump in Le Sud-Ouest (Montreal)

A clean and sustainable terrace integration, carried out by AirGreen

At AirGreen , we understand the constraints of Montreal buildings—terraces, balconies, flat roofs, and limited technical spaces. On this project located in Le Sud-Ouest (Montreal) , our team installed a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump (new generation R-32 ) to provide four-season comfort to an urban condo, without noise or clutter and in strict compliance with RBQ , Hydro-Québec standards and the requirements of the condominium association.

Context: urban condo, paved terrace, limited clearances

The client wanted to modernize his air conditioning system and benefit from energy-efficient heating in winter, with a reliable, quiet and compact unit. The terrace of the accommodation is paved and adjoins a solid concrete wall ; the space is clear but limited , which requires:

  • precise air clearances for the outdoor unit;

  • discreet management of refrigerant connections and power supply;

  • a gravity condensate drain with continuous slope and frost protection.

The Sharp ZU1 won the award for its performance/footprint ratio, its resistance to extreme cold and its R-32 refrigerant, which is more efficient than R-410A.

Choice of device: Sharp ZU1, performance and peace of mind

The Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump offers:

  • reliable heating down to around −25°C , ideal for Montreal winters;

  • a variable speed compressor (inverter) that adjusts power in real time, reducing consumption;

  • low noise operation , appreciated on a shared terrace or adjoining neighbors;

  • the new R-32 charge , more efficient and with reduced GWP ;

  • eligibility for efficiency programs when installation criteria are met (approved model, performance, documented commissioning).

For a condo, the whole thing constitutes a credible energy upgrade , with savings in use and stable comfort .

AirGreen installation method: millimeter precision on the terrace

We have chosen a raised aluminum support , with four legs, for:

  • raise the unit above the terrace plane (rain, snow, snow removal);

  • ensure optimal peripheral air circulation ;

  • facilitate maintenance and annual inspection.

Under each condenser skid, we have integrated anti-vibration pads to separate the equipment from the support and the ground, limiting the transmission of vibrations to the paving slabs. The positioning respects the manufacturer's clearances from the wall and lateral obstacles, an essential condition for maintaining efficiency and avoiding recirculation of hot air in summer.

The refrigerant connections (fluid and return), continuously insulated , pass through the wall with a sealed perforation ; the exterior finish is neat, in order to waterproof and insulate the passage. The communication cabling and the power supply are routed in parallel, separated in accordance with good HVAC practices. The condensate evacuation is gravity-based , with a regular slope and a protected outlet , to avoid any backflow and reduce the risk of freezing.

Commissioning: sealing quality and parameters checked

Once the piping was brazed and insulated, our team carried out:

  • a dry nitrogen leak test , followed by a deep vacuum (controlled microns);

  • checking pressures and temperatures in cooling/heating mode;

  • balancing of lengths, verification of currents and dedicated circuit breaker rating , in accordance with the manufacturer's electrical requirements;

  • drain validation (flow, slope, fixing);

  • configuration of comfort parameters (instructions, speeds, silent night mode when present).

This approach ensures sustainable performance , contained consumption and a fully applicable guarantee .

Results for the customer: 12-month comfort, controlled noise

Right out of the box, the Sharp ZU1 delivers:

  • uniform coolness in summer, without aggressive drafts;

  • continuous heating in mid-season and winter, with an advantageous COP compared to baseboards;

  • a discreet noise level on the terrace as well as inside;

  • rapid responsiveness thanks to the inverter, which avoids energy-consuming ON/OFF cycles.

The customer benefits from space savings (no machinery on the floor inside), an optimized electricity bill , and a long-term solution that complies with the standards in force in Montreal.

Notable technical points of this project

  • Raised aluminum support : stability, corrosion resistance, precise leveling on slabs.

  • Anti-vibration pads : acoustic comfort for the owner and the neighborhood.

  • Gravity drain : simplicity, reliability, less maintenance than a pump (when slopes are possible).

  • Waterproof drilling and clean finishes : protection of the building, aesthetics of the facade/terrace.

  • Short connection routes : minimized load losses, better seasonal efficiency .

  • Clear service access : fast and safe maintenance interventions.

AirGreen best practices to remember for installation on a terrace

  1. Clearances : Always follow the manufacturer's clearances (front, sides, top). A condenser too close to a wall loses efficiency and ages prematurely.

  2. Height : Raising the unit reduces fouling , promotes drainage , protects against puddles and facilitates maintenance.

  3. Vibrations : suitable pads and torque tightening preserve the building's peace of mind .

  4. Drain : favor gravity when possible; provide a continuous slope , fixings and protection against impacts.

  5. Electricity : dedicated power supply, compliant rating and protection; respect the bending radii and separations of the conductors.

  6. Serviceability : Anticipate the access path for maintenance; an inaccessible device costs more to maintain.

  7. Winter : in areas with heavy snow, check the free height and prevailing winds ; avoid accumulation under the unit.

HVAC Maintenance: The Key to Maintaining Performance

We recommend an annual maintenance :

  • cleaning of indoor/outdoor exchangers ;

  • control of pressure switches , fans, connections;

  • drain/watertightness check;

  • update of settings (time slots, silent mode).

Regular maintenance extends the lifespan, stabilizes consumption and maintains the warranty .

AirGreen in Greater Montreal

Our teams cover Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , the South Shore and the North Shore . We install and maintain wall-mounted , multi-zone and central heat pumps, with particular expertise in sites with architectural constraints (condos, plexes, heritage buildings). Our approach: precise diagnosis , transparent quote , careful execution and follow-up after installation.

In short: the installation of this Sharp ZU1 on a paved terrace in the Southwest illustrates our know-how: correct sizing , impeccable execution details and documented commissioning . The result: four-season comfort , silence , respected aesthetics - all with a high performance in line with the expectations of an urban condo.
