Installation of a Sharp ZU1 Wall-Mounted Heat Pump in Outremont (Montreal)

Discreet interior head, controlled diffusion: an exemplary installation in a bright apartment in Outremont

At AirGreen , we have just completed the installation of a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump in an apartment in Outremont . The client's priority: to optimize four-season comfort without compromising the aesthetics of the living room, which is spacious and very bright. The chosen configuration— wall-mounted head in the upper part , close to a large bay window, vertical then horizontal connection path under white capping , Eco Inverter condenser on a flat roof—combines silence , efficiency and durability , while respecting the constraints of the building.

Housing context and performance objectives

The apartment is located on the upper floor of a typical Outremont residential building, with high ceilings , simple moldings and vertical bays equipped with strip blinds . These glass surfaces provide beautiful light, but also generate significant solar gain in summer and heat loss in mid-season. The objective of the project was twofold:

  • Quickly cool the living room and adjoining dining area on hot days;

  • Provide stable and economical supplementary heating in spring and autumn, more efficiently than existing electric baseboards.

The Sharp ZU1 , in the 12,000 BTU version, was selected for its inverter modulation and its low temperature heating capacity , perfectly suited to the Montreal climate.

Interior installation: precision, aesthetics and maintenance

Air positioning and diffusion

The interior head is installed at the highest point of the wall , a few centimeters from the ceiling , in order to promote controlled stratification and efficient horizontal sweeping . The proximity of the bay window helps to break up the hot stratification in summer and to equalize temperatures up to the peripheral areas.

Route of the connections

Three elements stand out visually in the photo:

  1. Vertical downspout sheathed in white capping at the corner of the wall: the refrigeration connections and the power cable are continuously insulated there;

  2. Wide curve with controlled radius to respect the bending limits of copper tubes (prevention of micro-cracks and pressure losses);

  3. Horizontal ceiling treatment over a short segment to the right, allowing access to a single opening in the facade leading to the roof.

This geometry reduces the overall length , limits bends and helps maintain excellent efficiency on the condenser side.

Condensate drain

Gravity drainage is preferred. The slope is constant from the unit to the outlet point, avoiding the use of a lift pump and simplifying HVAC maintenance . The passages are sealed and insulated to prevent interstitial condensation.

Fixing and anti-vibration

The head plate is anchored in the structure (uprights identified by the detector), torque-controlled wood screws, interposition of buffers to prevent the transmission of micro-vibrations to the gypsum. The result: no parasitic noise , even at high ventilation speed.

Features of the Sharp ZU1: comfort and energy efficiency

  • DC Inverter Technology : the machine continuously adjusts its power to match actual demand ;

  • R-32 refrigerant : better carbon footprint and higher yields than R-410A generations;

  • Efficient heating down to −25°C (extreme cold range), relevant for Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, North Shore and South Shore ;

  • Very low noise levels : discreet operation in living room and bedroom;

  • Sharp's own high-density filtration and Plasmacluster treatment, useful against particles and certain indoor pollutants;

  • User-friendly remote control : weekly programming, night mode, auto restart after power off.

AirGreen Methodology: from study to after-sales service

Preliminary study

  • Sizing based on surface area, glazing orientation and envelope;

  • Electrical check (dedicated circuit breaker, cable gauge, ground continuity);

  • Analysis of the optimal route for connections and drains, with priority given to length sobriety and visual discretion .

Drilling, sealing and insulation

  • Clean coring with sheath;

  • Sealing with air barrier/vapor barrier compatible sealant;

  • Continuous insulation of lines to avoid thermal bridges and condensation;

  • Clipped capping , clean cut and aligned junctions: neat finish for a refined living room.

Refrigeration chain and controls

  • Flares calibrated with a torque meter;

  • Nitrogen flushing during brazing;

  • Pressure test then deep vacuum < 500 microns with rise test;

  • Loading according to actual length;

  • Functional tests in cold and hot conditions with control of overheating and subcooling .

Documentation and usage advice

Upon handover of the site, we provide:

  • A commissioning report ;

  • A maintenance guide (cleaning filters, good temperature practices, humidity management);

  • Our team's direct contact details for annual monitoring .

Result: noticeable comfort and impeccable finishes

From the first start-up, the room reaches the setpoint quickly and smoothly. The diffusion is homogeneous , the sound contained , and the integration of the white capping makes the installation almost invisible in everyday use. The customer benefits from stable comfort while reducing the kWh consumed thanks to the Inverter modulation.

AirGreen Tips for Sustained Performance

  1. Filters : rinse/vacuum every 8 to 12 weeks during use;

  2. Instructions : Avoid extreme deviations; let the inverter modulate to maximize savings ;

  3. Winter : maintain clearance around the condenser on the roof, do not obstruct it;

  4. Spring : visual inspection of external connections and capping ;

  5. Annual maintenance : deep cleaning, checking of refrigeration parameters and sealing .
