Installation of a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie

Four-season comfort in a Montreal living room: our careful installation of a Sharp wall-mounted headboard

In this typical Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie home, we are installing a Sharp ZU1 series wall-mounted heat pump (new generation R-32 ). The client's goal: to improve the comfort of a south-facing living space, gain in silence and efficiency, and reduce the energy bill without major ductwork. Our AirGreen team is responsible for the design , installation , and commissioning according to the best HVAC practices applicable in Montreal and Greater Montreal.

The context of the piece and the constraints of the site

  • Interior location : wall head above a clearance, near a corner return window .

  • Shortest route : exit to the outside through the right wall of the head, which minimizes the length of lines and limits pressure losses.

  • Working height : standard under-ceiling, ideal for uniform diffusion and for keeping maintenance simple (easily accessible filter).

  • Aesthetics : path in the top right corner of the room for a discreet appearance and clear access to the service hatches.

Why the Sharp ZU1 is suitable for this project

Next-generation efficiency and refrigerant

The ZU1 series operates on R-32 , a modern refrigerant that allows for better seasonal efficiencies and a reduced load compared to older generations. In heating mode, the performance curve maintains an excellent level of comfort in cold weather , which is perfectly suited to Montreal winters.

Silence and air quality

The Sharp wall-mounted fan's design prioritizes low noise and even distribution thanks to a wide-opening flap. Regular maintenance of the washable filter optimizes air quality and the longevity of the unit.

Capacity flexibility

The ZU1 series covers the usual power of a Montreal living room (typical range 12–18 kBTU depending on the load). We systematically size on the basis of the surface area , orientation , envelope and internal gains , to avoid oversizing which generates short cycles and discomfort.

Our HVAC installation method on this site

1) Preparation & tracing

We validate the mounting template on a solid structure (upright behind the plasterboard or appropriate anchors), then we check the evacuation slope of the condensate drain. Positioning close to the corner allows for free blowing and avoids any air recycling against the window lintel.

2) Drilling and technical exit

  • Through hole of approximately 65–70 mm, slightly inclined outwards to ensure gravity drainage of condensate (no pump required in this configuration).

  • Installation of a bulkhead and a vapor barrier , then protection of the frigolines (insulated refrigeration pipes) against abrasion.

3) Refrigeration and electrical connections

  • Short lines (< 3 m in this case), brazed/flared according to manufacturer's recommendations, with torque controlled by dynamometer.

  • Communication and power cable sized according to the length and capacity of the unit, with clear marking for future maintenance.

  • Deep vacuum (≤ 500 microns) and nitrogen leak test before opening the valves.

4) Installation of the outdoor unit

The condenser is installed on the outside side corresponding to the outlet wall to reduce the length of lines, with clearances respected (suction/blowing) and positioning protected from roof drops . Depending on the site, we favor brackets clear of the ground or base on anti-vibration slab for reliable winter service.

5) Commissioning & settings

  • Start-up under supervision, control of pressures , evaporation/condensation temperatures , and intensity .

  • Adjustment of blowing parameters according to the volume and layout of the furniture in order to avoid dead zones .

  • Customer training: cleaning filters, proper use of auto/heating/air conditioning modes , time programming.

Route and finishes

  • Direct outlet to the right of the head, in the corner, for minimal travel and reduced heat loss.

  • Estimated short total link length , which improves responsiveness and COP in winter.

  • Gravity drain with continuous outward slope: simple, reliable and silent solution.

Integration into space

The wall head is positioned high on the wall , away from obstacles and away from the window , which prevents air short-circuiting and limits direct sunlight on the probe.

Result: comfort, savings and discretion

After balancing, the living room benefits from a rapid temperature reduction in summer and stable heating in mid-season and cold weather. Electricity consumption is reduced thanks to the variable-speed compressor and more efficient R-32 . Noise levels remain very low, which is ideal for Montreal's urban housing .

Grants and local compliance

We assist our clients in guiding them towards available grant programs when the configuration and performance are suitable (high-efficiency heat pump, Quebec climate criteria). We apply RBQ rules , clearance requirements and good installation practices for safe and sustainable installations in Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , South Shore and North Shore .

HVAC Use and Maintenance Tips

Good daily practices

  • Keep the setpoint stable to promote modulation and avoid jolts.

  • Use dehumidification mode on humid days for increased comfort.

  • Leave the unit free of any obstacles within 1.5 m of the front.

Preventive maintenance

  • Clean filters every 4 to 8 weeks depending on usage.

  • Annual inspection: heat exchange , tightening , condensates , sealing , and control of refrigeration parameters .

  • Clearing the outdoor unit in winter (ice/snow) to preserve air flow .

What we bring extra at AirGreen

Honest sizing and advice

We size each heat pump according to the actual load of the room, not according to a "one-size-fits-all" power. The Sharp ZU1 series is particularly interesting for living rooms in Montreal condos and plexes thanks to its efficiency and silence .

Finishing and follow-up

Our teams focus on clean finishes , short paths and clear documentation . After commissioning, we provide follow-up : seasonal checks, maintenance reminders, and assistance in the event of a later addition of a second zone or an insulation upgrade.
