A better-tempered Montreal kitchen all year round: installation of a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted head, integrated to the millimeter
In Verdun, duplex and triplex kitchens are often bright, open to a backyard, but exposed to temperature variations and heat gain in the late afternoon. In this project, we installed a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump in a renovated kitchen, with sage green walls, white moldings and a full-height storage unit. Our goal: to ensure stable four-season comfort , even air circulation , and aesthetic integration that respects the space constraints.
Client background and objectives
The owner wanted:
-
limit summer overheating due to lateral sun and cooking appliances;
-
reduce humidity and the feeling of heaviness during heat waves;
-
benefit from a quick heating boost on cool mid-season mornings;
-
maintain a clean visual line , without invasive trunking or visible cables.
After a technical visit and simplified load calculation for the kitchen-dining area (standard ceiling height, large openings, exposed brick facade), we recommended a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted head of suitable capacity, coupled with an outdoor condenser cleared of winter snow.
Why the Sharp ZU1 series in a Verdun home?
The ZU1 series ( R-32 refrigerant) meets the needs of Montreal urban housing:
-
Fine modulation inverter to maintain a stable setpoint without thermal yo-yo;
-
Cold climate heating capabilities up to typical island winter temperatures;
-
Linear blowing with adjustable blades, ideal for hugging the ceiling and diffusing air along the walls;
-
Very low noise level from the interior head, essential in an open kitchen communicating with the living room;
-
Energy efficiency to reduce electricity bills compared to electric convectors alone.
These advantages, combined with precise positioning, give an immediate feeling of comfort without direct air currents on the occupant.
Layout: accuracy of placement above the upper box
We positioned the head in the upper part , just above a brown wall box, near the exit leading to the courtyard. This choice is not insignificant:
-
it frees up the cooking area and prevents recirculation of greasy effluents ;
-
it guarantees an air flow along the ceiling , which descends naturally, for uniform diffusion;
-
it facilitates gravity drainage of condensate to the outside, without a pump;
-
it limits the length of refrigeration lines (≈ 2.5 to 3.5 m), a guarantee of performance and reliability.
We checked the clearances around the head so as not to hinder the air intake by the proximity of the box. The vanes are adjusted to sweep the room without blowing directly onto the preparation area.
Refrigerated path and finishes: discreet and durable
The connections are made through the rear wall towards the courtyard:
-
single drilling with sheath and peripheral sealing;
-
continuous insulation of lines to prevent condensation in summer;
-
UV-resistant white exterior capping , suitable for facade materials;
-
galvanized wall brackets for the condenser, raised from the ground to prevent snow accumulation and improve defrosting;
-
continuous drain slope for noise-free and backflow-free drainage.
Inside, the discreet power path follows the high angle of the room, in line with the molding, for a clean visual reading . The assembly complies with RBQ/CSA standards and good residential HVAC practices.
AirGreen installation protocol: quality control at every stage
Our certified teams follow a proven protocol:
-
Site protection and tracing of installation axes.
-
Nitrogen pressurization and differential pressure gauge leak test .
-
Deep vacuum draw to the required threshold and vacuum resistance confirmed.
-
Flared fittings tightened to the prescribed torque ; flange torque check.
-
Electrical check : circuit breaker size, cable section, continuity, grounding.
-
Commissioning : measurements of blowing temperatures , intensity, stability, and adjustment of the shutters to optimize the sweep.
-
Delivery to the customer : instructions for use by season, reminder of HVAC maintenance operations.
Managing the constraints of a kitchen
Installing a head in a kitchen requires some additional precautions:
-
Airflow regulated to avoid direct blowing onto the hob and hood;
-
More regular filter maintenance (4 to 6 weeks in summer) to manage oily particles;
-
Machine sensors protected from point heat;
-
Height chosen to contain deposits and simplify cleaning.
This approach limits fouling, preserves efficiency and reduces perceived noise .
Comfort achieved: from controlled coolness to precise heat support
As soon as it is switched on, the kitchen gains:
-
a rapid lowering of the temperature during cooking sessions;
-
dehumidification which makes the air lighter during heat waves;
-
in winter, a gentle addition which eliminates the gaps between the kitchen and adjacent rooms;
-
remarkable stability thanks to Inverter modulation.
The occupant can cook, chat and work at the counter without being bothered by the noise level .
Maintenance and longevity: our recommendations
To maintain performance:
-
rinse the filters more often than in the salon (in the kitchen, frequency is key);
-
clear the outdoor condenser of plants in summer and snow in winter;
-
plan annual maintenance : operating pressures, insulation checks, tightening, blowing temperatures, electrical inspection;
-
maintain reasonable settings (23–24°C in summer, 21–22°C in winter) to allow the machine to modulate.
These actions extend the lifespan and preserve the expected savings .
Grants and Eligibility
Recent R-32 wall-mounted heat pumps , such as the Sharp ZU1 with the appropriate capacity and meeting Energy Star and cold climate heating criteria, may be eligible for energy efficiency programs . We support our clients in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore with eligibility analysis, documentation and file preparation.
Practical advice before installing in a kitchen
-
Precise sizing : take into account the contribution of cooking appliances, sunlight and existing ventilation.
-
Head placement : favor a high wall, far from steam plumes , with flow along the ceiling.
-
Gravity drain : to be favored as a priority; a condensate pump is only considered as a last resort.
-
Hood : check that the blowing does not interfere with the capture of fumes.
-
Maintenance access : maintain clearances around the facade for cleaning the filters.
Why AirGreen for Verdun and Greater Montreal?
-
Mastery of local typologies : plex, exterior stairs, brick facades, backyard access.
-
Careful execution : discreet finishes, optimized lengths, compliant HVAC installation .
-
Complete support : brand and capacity selection, installation, HVAC maintenance , monitoring.
-
Local availability : field teams covering Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, North Shore, South Shore .
Project review
This Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump installation in Verdun ensures precise comfort in a demanding kitchen, without compromising aesthetics or ergonomics. Thanks to a short path , a gravity drain and an adapted blower setting , the room remains pleasant in all seasons, while reducing operating costs . It is the illustration of an AirGreen approach: technical, discreet, and focused on the actual use of the occupants.
