Installation of a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension

Four-season comfort and healthier air: a Sharp ZU1 perfectly integrated into a Villeray duplex

At AirGreen , we have just installed a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump in a duplex in the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension neighborhood. The client's goal: to achieve efficient heating in the winter , precise air conditioning in the summer , and superior air quality without disrupting the aesthetics of the home or the daily use of the rooms. The Sharp ZU1 series— R-32 refrigerant, Eco Inverter compressor, and Plasmacluster system—meets these expectations exactly, in addition to offering quiet operation worthy of family environments.

Housing context and choice of location

The duplex has standard ceilings and medium-sized living areas. We positioned the indoor head in a family room, high up and centered on the wall , to create a uniform airflow without blowing directly onto the seating areas. This placement promotes proper stratification in heating mode and limits cold spots near the floor.

Outdoors, the Sharp Eco Inverter condenser is installed on a raised aluminum support fixed to a stable paving stone. This choice guarantees:

  • optimal ground clearance for snow and runoff water;

  • reduced vibrations thanks to anti-vibration pads;

  • easy access for HVAC maintenance and future work.

All refrigerant connections follow a short, direct route through the load-bearing wall: fewer equivalent lengths, less pressure losses and therefore better efficiency . The UV-resistant white casing blends into the light-coloured façade, whilst protecting the insulation and the condensation drain.

Sizing and energy performance

Before any installation, we perform a thermal load calculation based on the envelope, orientation and use of the room. Here, the required load corresponded to ≈ 12,000 BTU/h , perfectly covered by the ZU1 range . Inverter technology continuously adjusts the power to avoid on/off cycles and maintain a stable temperature with energy savings .

Key advantages of the Sharp ZU1 series:

  • High efficiency (Energy Star profile) and reliable operation in extreme cold, adapted to the Montreal climate.

  • Quiet operation indoors and outdoors, ideal for bedrooms and study areas.

  • Plasmacluster : emission of positive and negative ions to reduce allergens and suspended particles , beneficial for homes sensitive to air quality.

  • R-32 refrigerant : reduced global warming potential compared to R-410A, better environmental balance .

  • Precision remote control and intelligent modes (dehumidification, frost protection) to adapt to mid-seasons.

Key steps in HVAC installation

  1. Identification and marking
We validate the clearances around the indoor head and the condenser: free air circulation, 30 to 45 cm above the ground for the outdoor unit, no immediate obstacle in front of the air intake/discharge.

  2. Fixing the inner plate
Perfectly level installation, anchored in the structure. The through drilling is carried out with a controlled slope towards the outside to promote gravity drainage and protect the wall.

  3. Routing of links
The insulated copper pipes and communication cable follow a capped protected path to the condenser. Estimated length: 1.8 to 2.5 m , limiting losses and simplifying maintenance. A service loop is left for future operations.

  4. Installing the condenser
The Sharp Eco Inverter unit sits on a raised stand with anti-vibration spacers . Flare fittings are torqued and then deep vacuumed to remove non-condensable moisture and air.

  5. Leak tests and start-up
Vacuum control, measurement of blowing pressures and temperatures. Motorized shutter adjustments to prevent drafts in occupied areas.

  6. Finishing and advice
Seals at the crossings, collars on the drain, provision of an HVAC maintenance guide. Validation with the customer of the air flow , seasonal modes and instructions .

Execution details visible on the project

  • Indoor unit : slim profile, horizontal shutter ensuring ample diffusion; positioning that preserves furniture and wall decoration .

  • Outdoor unit : beige Sharp condenser, distinctive Plasmacluster logo ; location protected from falling ice from the roof, side clearance respected for service.

  • Condensate drain : gravity with continuous slope and protected outlet; no pump required, therefore reduced risk and minimal noise .

  • Electricity : protected dedicated line (compliant circuit breaker), secure control wiring in the enclosure.

  • Aesthetics : aligned white capping , stainless steel fixings ; discreet screws and seals for clean integration .

Results for the occupant

  • Stable heating in the depth of the room without cold layers on the floor.

  • In summer, rapid air conditioning with effective dehumidification during humidity peaks.

  • Low noise level : perfect for reading, teleworking and sleeping.

  • Improved air quality thanks to Plasmacluster and regular filtration , appreciated by families prone to seasonal allergies.

Recommended maintenance and best practices

To maintain the performance of a heat pump :

  • Clean/vacuum the filters every 4 to 8 weeks (more frequently if there are animals or dust).

  • Clear snow and leaves around the condenser; leave 45–60 cm free on the front and sides.

  • Annual inspection by AirGreen: verification of pressures , heat exchange , sealing , electronic calibration and cleaning of the internal exchanger.

  • Seasonal modes : use Auto Inverter to smooth out consumption; in humid mid-seasons, use Dry for comfort.

  • Remote control : avoid setting too low in summer (22–23°C is sufficient) and too high in winter (20–21°C), which optimizes the bill .

Pitfalls to avoid when undertaking a similar project

  • Connection routes too long or in siphon : loss of capacity, oil poorly returned to the compressor.

  • Ground-level exterior support : exposure to snow and ice, difficult maintenance.

  • Condensate pump not justified : added noise and maintenance; favor gravity when the architecture allows it.

  • Undersize or oversize : the ZU1 range comes in various capacities; only accurate load calculation ensures comfort and durability .

Grants and territory served

Thanks to its high efficiency and reliable operation in cold weather, the Sharp ZU1 is generally eligible for high-efficiency heat pump grant programs in Quebec. Our team assists customers in Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , the North Shore and the South Shore in preparing supporting documents and directing them to the right programs.

Why AirGreen

We combine field engineering , careful execution and after-sales service . For this Villeray project, the client benefits from a documented commissioning , a maintenance plan , and monitoring during the first heating season to confirm the most economical settings.
