Installation of a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension

A discreet interior head, perfectly positioned for consistent comfort and real savings

At AirGreen , we take as much care in the selection of equipment as in the installation of the indoor head . This installation in an apartment in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension illustrates our approach: a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump (ZU1 range, R-32 refrigerant) , installed at the top of the wall , in the warm corner of the room, for uniform diffusion and quiet operation all year round in Montreal , Laval and Longueuil as well as on the North Shore and the South Shore .

Client background and objectives

The accommodation, typical of Montreal plexes, presented:

  • a living room opening onto a corridor,

  • plaster walls with tight angles,

  • standard ceiling heights , suitable for installation in high areas.

The occupier wanted:

  • reliable additional heating in winter and efficient air conditioning in summer,

  • a very low noise level ,

  • a neutral aesthetic without visible cables,

  • simple HVAC maintenance , with accessible filters.

After thermal survey and examination of possible air flows, we recommended a Sharp ZU1 in high wall mounting , with a capacity calibrated to the room (approximately 12,000 BTU depending on the estimated sensitive load), ideal for spaces of 35 to 55 m² depending on the envelope and sunlight.

Why the Sharp ZU1 range for this project

  • R-32 (A2L) refrigerant : better volumetric efficiency and reduced GWP compared to older generations, benefiting consumption and the environment.

  • Inverter technology : fine modulation, temperature stability and reduced operating costs.

  • Cold climate performance : maintains heating capacity under our frequent winter temperatures.

  • Quiet : Low turbulence indoor fan, ideal for a living room or bedroom .

  • Potential eligibility for grants when performance profile meets required thresholds.

Choosing the location: the art of directing the air

The high wall location , as close to the ceiling as possible , is not a coincidence. We aim for:

  • a longitudinal diffusion towards the living area, with a horizontal shutter which sweeps the room,

  • a free air intake , without obstacles less than one meter below the facade,

  • reducing hot air recirculation in winter,

  • a short route for refrigeration connections to the outside, limiting pressure losses and intervention time.

The head is deliberately offset from the angle by a few centimeters in order to avoid the "wedge effect" (disturbed air return), while maintaining careful visual integration .

Technical details of the interior installation

  • Equipment type : Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump (wall-mounted indoor head).

  • Power supply : dedicated outlet to the electrical panel, disconnection at the condenser, low voltage communication between units.

  • Refrigeration connections : continuously insulated annealed copper, conforming bending radii, controlled tightening torque , leak tests carried out with dry nitrogen then deep vacuum .

  • Condensates : gravity drainage , regular slope, non-return at the crossing, insulation of sections in temperate zones.

  • Finish : discreet white capping , clean wall penetration with vapor barrier restored to preserve the integrity of the envelope.

Result: no visible cables , no vibrations, a discreet unit that blends into the room.

Technical details exterior side (summary)

Even though the photo shows the indoor unit, our outdoor configuration follows our Montreal standards:

  • Support in wall brackets or on frames depending on the site,

  • Rear/side clearance for proper airflow ,

  • Sufficient elevation to avoid snow and facilitate defrosting ,

  • Disconnect box within reach, UV sheath on the insulation, careful tightening and interference suppression.

Commissioning: AirGreen method and controls

  1. Nitrogen pressure tests (stability ≥ 24 h if required by the construction site context).

  2. High vacuum to a low target level and lift test to check for moisture.

  3. Opening of factory valves and load control according to the actual length of the lines.

  4. Functional running-in : heating then air conditioning, recording of supply/return temperatures , intensities and overheating/subcooling .

  5. Calibration of the shutter and air flow according to the geometry of the room.

  6. Acoustic checks and explanations to the customer ( maintenance , filters , modes ).

Perceived comfort and results

  • Rapid temperature rise in the off-season, stable maintenance in winter.

  • Gentle air circulation thanks to the orientation of the shutters, limiting stratification under the ceiling.

  • Low noise level : the machine is barely noticeable in steady state.

  • Aesthetics : clean lines, no visible conduits, integration into the color of the walls.

Good usage practices (client)

  • In winter , favor heating mode with a stable setting (20–22°C) to allow the inverter to modulate.

  • In summer , aim for a moderate setpoint (23–24°C) to maximize energy efficiency .

  • Clean filters every 4 to 8 weeks depending on usage.

  • Keep 1 m free in front of the headboard and avoid thick curtains which deflect the jet .

  • Schedule annual HVAC maintenance : exchanger cleaning, electrical check, condensate inspection, verification of refrigeration parameters.

What we systematically avoid

  • No need for multiple drillings : a short, direct path limits thermal bridges.

  • Uncontrolled siphon loops : risk of odors and stagnation.

  • Elbows too tight on copper: pressure losses and premature wear.

  • Loose wiring : sources of noise and failures.

  • Insufficient clearances around the head: reduced performance and deceived sensors.

Grants and Compliance

High-efficiency wall-mounted heat pumps like the Sharp ZU1 (R-32) may be eligible for certain financial assistance programs in Quebec, depending on the housing configuration and performance criteria. We support our customers in Montreal , Laval and Longueuil , as well as the North Shore and South Shore , to document the installation and gather the necessary parts for the application when applicable.

Why AirGreen

Our specialized HVAC teams master the constraints of Montreal buildings : plaster walls, tight angles, clean penetrations, roofs exposed to frost. We deliver durable , clean installations optimized by measurement. This Sharp ZU1 in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension illustrates this standard: four-season comfort , silence , energy efficiency and impeccable finish .
