A neat installation on a wooden balcony for optimal four-season comfort
At AirGreen , we recently completed a GREE Flexx Ultra R32 central heat pump installation in a typical home in Montreal's Lachine neighborhood. The project aimed to provide consistent thermal comfort year-round , while ensuring maximum energy efficiency and careful integration into a limited residential space.
Project context: balance between performance and aesthetics
The client was looking for an energy-efficient solution capable of providing heating in the winter and air conditioning during Montreal's increasingly hot summers. The space available for the outdoor unit was limited to a wooden balcony overlooking an alley , typical of homes in the Southwest and Lachine regions. We therefore opted for an installation on a raised support to preserve air circulation, reduce vibration noise and avoid any accumulation of snow in winter.
Equipment selection: the GREE Flexx Ultra R32
The GREE Flexx Ultra R32 was the ideal choice for this project. This new generation central heat pump , operating with R-32 refrigerant , is distinguished by:
-
Stable performance down to −30°C , perfectly adapted to the Quebec climate;
-
Superior energy efficiency (SEER up to 18 and HSPF above 10);
-
Its Inverter technology offers precise temperature control and quiet operation;
-
Its compatibility with provincial grant programs for high-efficiency appliances.
Technical details and installation configuration
The external compressor was securely fixed to a galvanized metal structure , itself anchored to the wooden floor of the balcony. This type of support guarantees increased mechanical stability , while allowing good evacuation of condensates.
-
Clearance height : 30 cm above the floor for optimal air circulation;
-
Integrated sound insulation under the anchor feet;
-
Refrigerant lines protected by a gray aluminum capping , harmonized with the structure;
-
Gravity drainage to the exterior, avoiding the need for a condensate pump.
The indoor air management system was installed in the basement, connecting to the existing ductwork. The system was carefully calibrated to optimize airflow and comfort in all rooms.
Technical challenges and solutions
One of the major challenges of this project concerned the vibration and structural stability of the wooden balcony. To address this, our team designed a custom steel support , allowing the weight of the unit to be distributed without excessively stressing the existing structure. In addition, special attention was paid to the minimum distance from the brick wall to ensure free air circulation.
Final result: efficiency and discretion
The result is a robust, discreet and efficient installation , perfectly integrated into the architecture of the building. The client now benefits from a complete central heating and air conditioning system , ready to face the harshest winters while reducing annual energy consumption.
