Installation of a Gree wall-mounted heat pump in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie

In Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, many houses and condos are spread over two levels with narrow stairwells and high ceilings. This type of architecture is charming, but it often complicates the distribution of heat in winter and coolness in summer.

In this project, our AirGreen team installed a Gree wall-mounted heat pump in a high recess at the top of a staircase. The goal: to stabilize the temperature on both floors while maintaining the aesthetics of the space.

A strategic location in a high-ceilinged staircase

In the photo, you can clearly see the Gree indoor unit fixed very high on the wall, with a ladder still in place: this is a sign of work at height , in a narrow volume.

We chose this location because it sits at the meeting point of warm air rising from the ground floor and cooler air from the upper floor. By positioning the wall-mounted unit in the heart of the stairwell , the heat pump can:

  • blow the air conditioning downwards in summer to cool the ground floor;

  • push warm air upstairs in winter to limit stratification and cold zones.

The unit is perfectly centered in the recess, resulting in a very clean visual appearance. The refrigerant pipes, condensation drain, and wiring have been concealed behind the wall, without any visible trunking, to maintain the clean lines of the decor.

A Gree wall-mounted heat pump adapted to Montreal's climate

For this project, we recommended a new generation Gree wall-mounted heat pump, approximately 12,000 BTU , ideal for a stairwell open to a living space.

Key features of this Gree product line for a residential client in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie:

  • Inverter compressor : the machine continuously modulates its power according to the actual demand, which reduces temperature variations and electricity consumption.

  • Efficient heating function in winter : the heat pump continues to heat efficiently even in cold weather, reducing the use of electric baseboard heaters or other backup systems.

  • Silent operation : ideal in a staircase open to living areas, so as not to disturb daily life or sleep.

  • Precise temperature control : the remote control (and, if needed, the Wi-Fi control options) allows you to easily adjust the comfort according to the time of day and the season.

A high-level installation that requires method and safety

Installing a wall unit this high is not simply a matter of “hanging a box”. In this type of configuration, our team follows several key steps:

  1. Wall structure check
    We ensure that the wall can support the weight of the device. A Gree mounting plate is securely anchored to the studs, guaranteeing long-term stability.

  2. Height and accessibility management
    The work is carried out from a stable ladder, and sometimes with a second technician to secure the unit during installation. Accurate leveling is essential for proper condensate drainage.

  3. Condensation drain path
    In a stairwell, a continuous slope must be provided for the drain pipe to prevent any water backflow. We directed the drain towards the back of the wall, ensuring that gravity was applied along its entire length.

  4. Passage of refrigeration lines
    The refrigerant lines pass through the wall to reach the outdoor unit, which is usually mounted on a wall bracket or pedestal in the yard or on a balcony. Bends are kept to a minimum to optimize efficiency and extend the system's lifespan.

  5. Dedicated power supply
    A dedicated electrical line, with appropriate circuit breaker and external disconnection, ensures the safety and compliance of the installation according to Quebec standards.

Four-season comfort for the whole house

Once the Gree wall-mounted heat pump is in operation, the benefits are quickly felt:

  • Summer : cold air is blown downwards into the stairwell and then diffuses into the living room and other rooms. The temperature becomes much more even, without stuffy rooms on the ground floor.

  • In winter , the heat pump extracts heat from the outside air and distributes it to the stairwell, naturally heating both levels. This reduces reliance on electric baseboard heaters and softens cold spots near doors and windows.

Occupants thus benefit from stable comfort all year round , with a very gentle airflow sensation thanks to the motorized shutter which directs the airflow.

Energy savings and added property value

By replacing or supplementing traditional electric heating with a Gree wall-mounted heat pump, the owner of this house in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie:

  • reduces its electricity consumption related to heating;

  • benefits from a two-in-one system (heating and air conditioning);

  • increases the attractiveness of the property on the market, a real plus for energy-conscious buyers.

The seasonal performance coefficients of modern heat pumps allow for several kilowatt-hours of heat for every kilowatt-hour consumed , resulting in tangible savings on the Hydro-Québec bill.

A clean, fast, and turnkey construction project

As with all our projects, we have:

  • protected the surfaces (stairs, walls, floor) during the work;

  • drilled the minimum number of openings necessary;

  • tested the system in heating and cooling modes;

  • explained to the customer the operation, basic maintenance and recommended frequency of filter cleaning.

The result: a discreet, efficient and secure installation , perfectly integrated into the architecture of the house.
