In this project, we assisted a family in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie who wanted to improve the comfort of their ground and upper floors while reducing their electricity bills. Their choice: a Gree wall-mounted heat pump , installed in the heart of the living space, in a typical Montreal two-story house with a central staircase and an open-concept living and dining area.
A typical Rosemont house with a central staircase
The house has a long ground floor:
-
an entrance hall leading directly to the staircase to the upper floor;
-
an open passage under the central beam;
-
a living room and dining room at the rear, bright and already well furnished.
This type of layout is very common in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie: the rooms are arranged in a row, and the staircase acts like a chimney, quickly drawing in heat… or coolness. The goal was therefore to position the Gree wall-mounted head unit in a strategic location to serve both purposes:
-
the ground floor (living room, dining room, hall);
-
the stairwell, which then distributes the air conditioning to the upstairs bedrooms.
Choosing a Gree 12,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump
For this project, we recommended a Gree wall-mounted heat pump of approximately 12,000 BTU , perfectly sized for a medium-sized ground floor with an open staircase.
Why Gree?
-
Heating performance adapted to Montreal winters, with good capacity maintenance when the mercury plunges.
-
High energy efficiency , allowing for reduced consumption compared to electric baseboard heaters.
-
Silent operation , essential in an open living space like this.
-
Multiple modes (heating, air conditioning, dehumidification, ventilation) for four-season comfort.
The Gree heat pump thus becomes the main system for the comfort of the ground floor, while also providing a valuable supplement to the upstairs bedrooms.
A location at the heart of the air circulation
The photo clearly shows the Gree wall-mounted head unit installed above the central opening , just before the stairwell. This placement is not accidental.
Optimize air distribution
-
The unit is installed high up, near the ceiling , to promote the mixing of warm air in winter and cool air in summer.
-
By blowing air towards the living room and hallway, the air conditioning naturally distributes itself towards:
-
the main living area;
-
the staircase, which brings air up to the upper floor;
-
the entrance hall, often cooler in winter due to the frequent opening of the door.
-
The result: cold areas near the entrance and stuffy rooms upstairs are avoided during heat waves.
Respect for the decor and architecture
The Gree unit is centered above the beam that separates the hall and the living room, which:
-
respects the architectural lines of the house;
-
frees up the living room walls for furniture and paintings;
-
makes the heat pump discreet, in a space that is already technical (ceiling lighting, beam, staircase).
The visual result is understated: a white band above the opening that blends into the wall.
Technical installation details (but not visible!)
Although the photo mainly shows the wall-mounted head, several technical details were taken into account:
-
A hole is drilled behind the unit , towards the outside, to allow the refrigerant lines, condensation drain and electrical cable to exit as discreetly as possible.
-
Insulated refrigeration lines protected by an external cover, to ensure the durability of the system despite Quebec winters.
-
Proper slope of the condensation drain , to prevent any water leakage inside.
-
Dedicated electrical connection , compliant with code, pulled from the main panel with appropriate circuit breaker.
Outside, the Gree compressor is installed on anti-vibration mounts, at a safe height from the ground to protect it from snow and facilitate snow removal.
Comfort felt by the occupants
After commissioning, the occupants noticed several improvements:
-
More uniform temperature between the hall, the living room and the upper floor.
-
The feeling of "hot air" in the stairwell disappears , thanks to better control of air circulation.
-
Lower electricity bills , as the heat pump takes over from the electric baseboard heaters for most of the heating season.
-
Quiet operation , which allows you to watch television or work in the living room without being disturbed by noise.
The number displayed on the front of the heat pump indicates the temperature setting, easily adjustable with the remote control or, depending on the model chosen, via a Wi-Fi application.
A four-season solution for Rosemont homes
In a neighbourhood like Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, where many houses are brick, narrow, and multi-storey, the Gree wall-mounted heat pump is a particularly attractive solution :
-
It is a better alternative to window air conditioners, which are noisier and less efficient;
-
It offers truly economical heating in mid-season and winter;
-
Its high wall installation allows for maximum comfort across multiple rooms with a single unit.
