Installation of a Gree wall-mounted heat pump in a Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie apartment

In this typical Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie apartment, with its high ceilings, long central hallway, and period woodwork, our clients were looking for a four-season comfort solution that would respect the apartment's character. Their goal: to effectively cool the apartment in the summer, supplement the main heating system in the winter, and eliminate noisy, old window air conditioners, all without cluttering the rooms or damaging the wood finishes.

We recommended they install a new generation Gree wall-mounted heat pump , approximately 12,000 BTU, perfectly sized for this large Montreal apartment.

A Montreal apartment with period charm

The project is located in a Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie multiplex: hardwood floors, solid wood doors, moldings around the frames, a narrow hallway leading to the bedrooms and the drawing studio. This type of layout makes adding a central ductwork system very complex and expensive: it would require opening up walls and ceilings, which would compromise the original aesthetic.

The Gree wall-mounted heat pump then emerges as the ideal solution: a single compact, discreet indoor unit capable of distributing fresh or hot air to several rooms via the hallway, without major construction work.

Why a Gree wall-mounted heat pump?

Gree is a global leader in residential wall-mounted heat pumps. For this project, we opted for a recent model Gree wall-mounted heat pump (inverter technology, modern refrigerant, high energy efficiency), offering:

  • An excellent performance/price ratio for this type of Montreal apartment.

  • Fine modulation of power thanks to the inverter compressor, which avoids frequent on/off cycles.

  • Very quiet operation, essential in a corridor open to the bedrooms and creative space.

  • A high-performance heating mode to support the main system during the colder months of mid-season and early winter.

  • Advanced features (smart defrosting, dehumidification mode, timer, etc.) for customized comfort.

Result: a single air conditioning + heating system that works for the occupants 12 months a year.

Interior installation details

The Gree wall unit was installed above the door frame in the central corridor. This positioning was not arbitrary:

  • It allows air to circulate naturally to adjacent rooms when the doors remain open.

  • The high height ensures even air circulation and avoids direct drafts at occupant level.

  • The device visually integrates into the area already framed by the door and moldings: the eye is drawn to the wood rather than the machine.

We carefully adjusted the wall bracket to ensure the unit was perfectly level and met Gree's recommended clearances. The artwork and sketches hanging on the wall were protected during the installation: no dust on the drawings, no stains on the wood floors.

The condensate drain was designed with a continuous outward slope to ensure reliable gravity drainage without the need for a pump. This reduces the risk of additional noise and long-term maintenance.

The refrigerant lines and wiring were routed as discreetly as possible, directly to the exterior wall. Once the cover was replaced, only a small, perfectly sealed service opening remained visible, preserving the interior aesthetics.

Installation of the outdoor compressor (courtyard side)

Outside, the Gree compressor was mounted on a wall bracket , at a good height to keep it clear of snow and ice accumulations typical of Montreal winters. We have:

  • Respect the necessary clearances for air circulation around the unit.

  • Added silent blocks to limit the transmission of vibrations to the building structure.

  • The compressor was oriented to facilitate service interventions and natural defrosting in winter.

The refrigerant lines are protected by a rigid, neutral-colored sheath that blends in with the building's brick and protects the pipes from UV rays and impacts.

Commissioning, adjustments and advice for occupants

Once the installation was complete, our AirGreen technicians proceeded to:

  1. Vacuuming and leak testing of the refrigeration circuit, to guarantee the absence of leaks.

  2. Verification of operating pressures and temperatures according to Gree specifications.

  3. Initial remote control programming : recommended modes for summer (cool / dry), for mid-season (auto) and for winter (heat with adapted setting).

We also took the time to explain to the occupants:

  • How to adjust the setting to maximize comfort without over-consuming.

  • How to orient the flap to direct the airflow towards the main rooms.

  • How to clean the washable filters of the indoor unit and how often to do it.

These personalized explanations are essential to get the most out of the Gree wall-mounted heat pump on a daily basis.

Comfort, silence and energy savings

From the very first days of use, the occupants noticed:

  • A significant drop in indoor temperature during heat waves, without the noise of a window fan.

  • Much more stable comfort, without constant “hot/cold” thanks to the machine's modulation.

  • Improved air quality : the heat pump continuously filters the air while operating, which is particularly appreciated in a creative environment where papers and materials generate fine dust.

  • In winter, it provides effective support to the existing heating system, reducing overall energy consumption and better distributing heat throughout the apartment.

Depending on the exact profile of the dwelling and the programs in force, this type of installation may also give access to certain subsidies or financial aid (energy efficiency programs and transition to high-performance equipment).
