In Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension, backyards are often compact, with wooden decks built over storage areas or basement access. In this typical Montreal home, we had to integrate a Gree wall-mounted heat pump without encroaching on the outdoor living space or compromising the yard's aesthetics. The solution: install the outdoor unit under the deck , out of sight… and protected from inclement weather.
A challenge of installation in a narrow courtyard
The client wished to take advantage of:
-
of more economical heating in winter ,
-
efficient air conditioning in summer ,
-
while retaining full use of its terrace and courtyard.
The foundation wall, basement openings, and terrace structure limited conventional ground-level installation options. Therefore, we opted for a suspended installation on wall brackets , directly attached to the concrete foundation, in the open space beneath the terrace.
This configuration allows:
-
to clear the courtyard floor ,
-
to protect the soil membrane against vibrations ,
-
and to offer comfortable access for maintenance, thanks to the removable panel in the skirt of the terrace.
The chosen solution: Gree Inverter R-32 wall-mounted heat pump
The heart of the system is a Gree wall-mounted heat pump with inverter technology and R-32 refrigerant , designed for the Quebec climate. This type of unit is particularly well-suited to homes in the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension area.
-
Efficient heating for a large part of the winter, while significantly reducing the consumption of electric baseboard heaters.
-
Gentle and consistent air conditioning during summer heatwaves, with power modulation that avoids sudden temperature changes.
-
High energy efficiency , thanks to the Inverter compressor which continuously adapts its speed.
-
Compact size , ideal for small spaces such as under a terrace.
Inside, a Gree wall unit ensures the distribution of hot or cold air in the main room, with precise control of temperature and fan speed.
A discreet installation under the wooden deck
The Gree outdoor unit is installed on sturdy metal brackets , fixed to the foundation. Below the unit, we have maintained sufficient clearance to facilitate the drainage of defrost water and air circulation.
Several details make the difference:
-
The terrace is equipped with a sliding/opening panel that allows easy access to the heat pump for annual maintenance.
-
The floor below is covered with anti-slip tiles , making the space usable in all weather conditions.
-
The refrigerant lines and wiring are neatly routed along the wall , protected in conduits and connected to an outdoor electrical box located near the unit.
The result: from the courtyard and the terrace, the heat pump remains virtually invisible. You can enjoy the comfort… without seeing the machine.
Ventilation, snow, and noise: everything is taken care of.
Installing a heat pump under a deck requires careful planning. We've checked several key points:
-
Front clearance : the opening under the terrace provides sufficient air volume for the fan to capture and expel air freely, without excessive recirculation.
-
Clearance height : the fan is placed low enough to be completely unobstructed, but high enough not to be blocked by snow accumulated near the house.
-
Weather protection : The wooden structure and the terrace above protect the heat pump from direct rain, hail and sun, which helps to extend its lifespan.
-
Noise reduction : housing the unit under the terrace, against the foundation wall, creates a slight acoustic barrier for neighbors and for the occupants of the house.
We also took care to comply with the manufacturer Gree's recommendations for minimum distances around the unit, in order to preserve the performance and reliability of the system.
Everyday comfort and energy savings
Since the installation, the owner has benefited from:
-
of stable comfort in winter , even when the temperature drops;
-
of quiet air conditioning in summer, without the hum of a compressor directly under the windows;
-
of a reduced electricity bill , the Gree heat pump covering most of the heating needs.
The location under the terrace also allows the rest of the yard to be freed up for gardening, a dining area or a play area, which is particularly appreciated in a dense neighbourhood like Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension.
