Installation of a Gree wall-mounted heat pump on a flat roof in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie

In Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, more and more homeowners are taking advantage of their flat roofs to install discreet, efficient heating and cooling systems perfectly suited to Montreal conditions. That's precisely what we did here: we installed a Gree Inverter wall-mounted heat pump using R-32 refrigerant , designed to provide year-round comfort for an urban dwelling while respecting the roof membrane and the building's aesthetics.

A typically Montreal project: flat roof, membrane, and neighborhood

The building has a flat roof made of elastomeric membrane , very common in Rosemont's plexes. This type of configuration imposes several constraints:

  • protect the membrane against point loads and perforations;

  • raise the unit to protect it from water, snow and ice;

  • minimize vibrations and noise transmitted to the dwellings below;

  • maintain secure access for maintenance.

Our team therefore designed an installation that respects these constraints while optimizing the performance of the Gree heat pump.

A Gree Inverter R-32 wall-mounted heat pump, ideal for Montreal's climate

The heart of the project is a Gree wall-mounted heat pump with Inverter technology , using R-32 type A2L refrigerant, which is more efficient and more environmentally friendly than older refrigerants.

This type of system offers several advantages for housing in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie:

  • Efficient heating in winter : the heat pump continues to deliver heat even in very cold weather, drastically reducing reliance on electric baseboard heaters.

  • Gentle air conditioning in summer : Inverter regulation precisely adjusts the power, which avoids sudden cold snaps and temperature variations.

  • Very good energy efficiency : by modulating the compressor speed, electricity consumption is optimized throughout the year.

  • Quiet operation : an essential point in a dense area where buildings are close together.

The system is sized to meet the actual needs of the dwelling, taking into account insulation, orientation and the volume to be air-conditioned.

An elevated installation that protects the roof and the machine

The photo clearly shows that the Gree outdoor unit is installed on a four-legged aluminum stand , itself placed on distribution plates and treated wood beams .

This setup has several advantages:

  • Membrane protection : the plates under the beams distribute the loads and prevent any perforation or puncture of the roof.

  • Unit elevation : the heat pump is kept above accumulations of water, snow and ice, which prolongs its lifespan and facilitates drainage.

  • Stability and wind resistance : the beams and support ensure a solid anchorage, important on a roof exposed to gusts.

  • Simplified access for maintenance : the working height is comfortable for our technicians, which facilitates periodic checks.

This type of structure is a standard at AirGreen when it comes to installing a heat pump on a flat roof in Greater Montreal.

Carefully installed and well-protected refrigerant connections

Another visible detail of the installation is the routing of the refrigerant lines and electrical wiring , which run along the vertical facade before entering the building.

We have :

  • insulated and protected the duct using a sheath covered with black and white tape, which protects against UV rays and weathering;

  • respected the recommended bending radii for copper pipes in order to preserve the performance and reliability of the refrigeration circuit;

  • separate and protected the condensate drain (small visible white pipe), so as to ensure free flow and prevent any stagnation of water on the roof;

  • Careful attention was paid to the wall penetration (behind the unit) in order to maintain the air and water tightness of the building envelope.

The result is a conduit passage that is clean, discreet and easy to inspect when needed.

Four-season comfort for the occupants

Inside, the Gree wall-mounted heat pump now provides:

  • stable and comfortable heating in winter, without temperature fluctuations;

  • efficient and quiet air conditioning during hot periods;

  • better temperature distribution than with baseboard heaters or a simple window air conditioner;

  • precise control thanks to the thermostat/wall control, allowing temperatures to be programmed according to living schedules.

For the occupants, this translates into increased comfort , a reduced electricity bill and the possibility of enjoying the accommodation in all seasons, even during heat waves or extreme cold.
