Installation of a Midea28 wall-mounted heat pump on a flat roof in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie

In Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, the flat gravel roofs typical of Montreal apartment buildings are ubiquitous. This type of building offers excellent installation opportunities for wall-mounted heat pumps, provided the roof structure and membrane are properly protected. In this project, we installed a Midea28 wall-mounted heat pump on the roof of an apartment in the area to provide our clients with year-round comfort while preserving the building's integrity.

Context: a top-floor apartment requiring efficient air conditioning and heating

Our client occupies the top floor of a brick building with a flat, gravel-covered roof. As is often the case in Montreal, the apartment was heated solely by electric baseboard heaters, without air conditioning. The result:

  • very hot in summer, especially during heat waves;

  • High electricity consumption in winter;

  • marked discomfort in rooms most exposed to the sun.

Because the street-facing facade is highly visible and subject to aesthetic constraints, installing a condenser on the facade was not ideal. The best option was to utilize the flat roof to install the outdoor heat pump, thus keeping the interior living spaces clean, quiet, and comfortable.

Choosing the Midea28 wall-mounted heat pump

After analyzing the heating needs of the dwelling and the occupants' lifestyles, we recommended a Midea28 mini-split wall-mounted heat pump in a single-zone configuration, ideal for:

  • a medium-sized apartment on the top floor;

  • an open living space (living room, dining room, kitchen);

  • efficient operation in both air conditioning and supplementary heating during the winter .

The advantages of the Midea28 range:

  • High-efficiency inverter technology, which allows for continuous power adjustment;

  • Reliable operation in cold weather, down to approximately −30 °C ;

  • Excellent energy efficiency, helping to reduce electricity bills;

  • Very low noise level, both inside and outside.

Installation of the Midea condenser on the flat roof

The photo clearly shows the Midea condenser installed on the roof, above the gravel membrane. Several important technical elements are in place to ensure a durable, safe, and compliant installation.

1. Elevated structure and membrane protection

Rather than placing the unit directly on the ground, we have:

  • used an elevated aluminum support , allowing the condenser to be kept at a good height relative to the gravel and snow accumulation;

  • distributes the loads using support blocks placed on insulating bases (high-density foam panels), in order to protect the roof membrane against perforations and punctures;

  • treated wooden beams were added as spacers, for maximum stability and better weight distribution.

This approach reduces vibrations, protects the membrane and facilitates rainwater runoff and snow removal.

2. Strategic positioning on the roof

The Midea28 condenser is installed:

  • at a safe distance from the edge of the roof and the parapets;

  • set back from the visible ventilation outlets on the roof;

  • with sufficient clearance on all sides to allow optimal airflow around the unit.

This positioning is crucial for:

  • maximize the performance of the heat pump;

  • limit the noise felt inside;

  • to facilitate future maintenance interventions.

3. Management of refrigeration lines and cabling

The refrigeration lines and electrical wiring run down to the dwelling, following the roof structure and parapet, then the masonry. The photo shows:

  • the insulated refrigeration pipes in a black sheath, securely fixed and protected;

  • the electrical wiring neatly routed to the dedicated power supply.

Everything is securely fastened to prevent:

  • friction caused by the wind;

  • the deterioration of the insulation;

  • water infiltration around penetrations.

A dedicated circuit breaker and adequate protection have been added to the electrical panel, in accordance with the applicable code.

Interior installation: targeted comfort in the living area

Inside, we installed a Midea28 wall-mounted head in the main room of the house, ideally positioned to cover:

  • the living room;

  • the dining room;

  • open-plan kitchen.

The advantages of this positioning:

  • homogeneous air distribution in the most used area;

  • easy access for maintenance (filter cleaning, inspection);

  • an optimal compromise between aesthetic discretion and efficiency.

Thanks to continuous power modulation, the Midea28 maintains a stable temperature without unpleasant drafts, whether used for air conditioning or supplemental heating.

Air conditioning and heating performance in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie

Our clients' needs were clear:

  1. Cooling effectively in the summer , despite the frequent Montreal heat waves on the roofs of plexes;

  2. Reduce heating bills in winter by decreasing reliance on electric baseboard heaters.

The Midea28 wall-mounted heat pump perfectly meets these two objectives:

  • In summer, it offers fast and efficient air conditioning of the main rooms, even when the sun is hitting the roof directly.

  • In winter, it provides economical heating down to very low temperatures, allowing for a significant reduction in the use of baseboards and overall electricity consumption.

In a top-floor apartment like this one, the gain in comfort is particularly noticeable: no more stifling evenings in July and sudden temperature changes in January.

Specifics of a heat pump installation on a flat roof

Installing a wall-mounted heat pump on a flat roof in Montreal requires specialized expertise. At AirGreen, we pay particular attention to the following points:

  • Respect for the roof membrane : suitable supports, insulating footings, no intrusive fixings in the membrane without justification and rigorous sealing where necessary;

  • Weight and snow load management : unit height and support designed to avoid critical accumulations;

  • Accessibility for maintenance : the unit is easily accessible for inspection, cleaning and functional testing;

  • Noise reduction : positioning and supports that limit the transmission of vibrations to the building and the surrounding area.

This project in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie illustrates our way of working: a tailor-made solution, designed as much for the comfort of the occupants as for the sustainability of the building.

The tangible benefits for the customer

A few weeks after the Midea28 was put into service, the client has already informed us of several improvements:

  • Immediate comfort in the living area, even on very hot days;

  • A more stable and uniform atmosphere from one room to another;

  • Anticipated reduction in energy costs thanks to more efficient heating during the shoulder seasons and in the middle of winter;

  • Housing value enhancement , an important asset in a sought-after area like Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie.
