Installation of a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump in Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve

In typical Montreal backyards, every square meter counts. In this project in the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district, we were commissioned to install aSharp wall-mounted heat pump on a covered balcony, while preserving circulation space and the quiet of the occupants.

Our AirGreen team therefore designed a discreet, safe installation perfectly suited to the Montreal climate, opting for a Sharp ZU1 Eco Inverter 12,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump , ideal for an apartment/condo type dwelling.

Context: a Montreal apartment with a covered balcony

The project is located at the rear of a typical duplex:

  • covered balcony overlooking an inner courtyard

  • Exterior cladding in beige vinyl ,

  • access door leading directly into the apartment,

  • close proximity with other balconies and metal staircases visible in the background.

The client wanted:

  • air-condition the main living area in the summer .

  • to have a high-performance auxiliary heating system in winter ,

  • maintain a functional balcony (clear passage, space for chairs and storage),

  • limit noise pollution for yourself and for the neighbors.

After analyzing the configuration and heating requirements, we recommended a high-efficiency Sharp wall-mounted heat pump , installed high on the balcony wall.

Equipment choice: Sharp ZU1 Eco Inverter wall-mounted heat pump

We have selected a Sharp ZU1 Eco Inverter 12,000 BTU , a residential wall-mounted heat pump designed to offer:

  • excellent energy efficiency in both air conditioning and heating modes .

  • Inverter technology allows for continuous power adjustment according to demand.

  • quiet operation, particularly important in a shared balcony environment,

  • an ideal compatibility with the typical surface areas of a 4½ or 5½ Montreal apartment with a semi-open concept.

This Sharp heat pump model is ideal for:

  • The living room and adjacent rooms cool down quickly,

  • to provide stable heating even at very low outdoor temperatures

  • reduce electricity consumption compared to traditional baseboard heaters or convectors.

Balcony installation details: discretion, security and performance

The photo clearly illustrates the chosen implementation strategy.

1. Outdoor unit mounted high on wall brackets

The Sharp outdoor unit is:

  • fixed to sturdy wall brackets securely anchored in the structure behind the vinyl cladding;

  • positioned above the balcony door in order to free up floor space;

  • installed high enough to avoid snow accumulation and accidental impacts (moving objects, furniture, etc.).

This configuration allows:

  • to keep the balcony fully usable;

  • to limit vibrations and noise transmission using anti-vibration pads ;

  • to provide excellent air circulation around the Sharp condenser.

2. Natural protection thanks to the balcony roof

The balcony is partially covered by a metal roof structure , which offers several advantages:

  • protection against direct rain, hail and some snow;

  • reduction of unit fouling;

  • extension of the lifespan of the capacitor and electronic components.

However, we made sure to respect the minimum clearances recommended by Sharp to ensure adequate ventilation, despite the presence of the roof.

3. Neat refrigeration and electrical connections

To the right of the unit, you can see the electrical disconnect box required by the code. The refrigerant lines and wiring are:

  • passed behind the coating and/or through a sheath for a clean finish,

  • securely fastened to prevent friction and noise in strong winds,

  • designed to remain accessible during future interviews.

This approach guarantees both aesthetics and ease of maintenance .

Key steps in installing a Sharp heat pump

1. Analysis of needs and the electrical panel

Before any installation, we have:

  • evaluated the electrical charge available at the panel,

  • validated the circuit breaker rating required by the Sharp heat pump.

  • determined the best route for the electrical circuit between the panel and the balcony.

2. Positioning the inner head

Inside, the Sharp wall-mounted head unit is installed in the main living room:

  • at a height, to promote air stratification and homogeneous diffusion;

  • away from obstacles (beams, columns) to avoid dead zones;

  • with a condensation drain directed safely to the outside.

3. Drilling, routing of connections and fastening

Next we have:

  • drilled through the wall with a slight slope for the natural drainage of condensation water;

  • past the refrigeration pipes, communication cables and drain to the outside;

  • fixed the outdoor unit onto its supports, carefully checking that it was level and secure .

4. Vacuum sealing, testing and startup

As with all our Sharp installations:

  • the refrigeration circuit is evacuated to remove moisture and air;

  • we perform a complete leak test ;

  • We carry out pressure and current checks before starting definitively.

Once the system is running, we measure:

  • the temperature of the air blown in air conditioning mode and in heating mode,

  • the stability of continuous operation,

  • and the perceived noise level on the balcony and inside.

Benefits for the customer in Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve

Since the installation, the customer has enjoyed numerous advantages:

  • Controlled summer comfort : the apartment remains cool even during the heat and humidity episodes typical of Montreal.

  • Efficient heating in winter : the Sharp wall-mounted heat pump takes over from the baseboard heaters, reducing the electricity bill.

  • Balcony still functional : no equipment on the floor, the space remains available for outdoor furniture.

  • Minimal noise disturbances : Sharp's Eco Inverter technology and high wall mounting reduce noise for the customer and neighbors.

  • Added value to the home : a modern and efficient heat pump is an important asset on the rental market and for resale.
