Installation of a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump in Plateau-Mont-Royal

In the Plateau-Mont-Royal neighbourhood, Montreal's typical flat roofs offer an ideal space for installing high-performance wall-mounted heat pumps, provided the work is carried out carefully and methodically. In this project, our AirGreen team installed a Sharp Eco Inverter wall-mounted heat pump for a residential unit, with the outdoor unit installed on the roof to maximize comfort while respecting the building's aesthetics.

Context: a client who wanted four-season comfort

The owner wanted:

  • A heating and air conditioning solution for a top-floor apartment.

  • An energy-efficient system, capable of reducing electricity bills compared to portable convectors and air conditioners.

  • A visually discreet installation, with no visible unity in the courtyard or on the facade.

  • A reliable device to cope with Montreal winters and summer heat waves.

The Sharp Eco Inverter wall-mounted heat pump, from the recent residential range, has established itself as an excellent choice: inverter technology, high seasonal efficiency, quiet operation, and perfect integration into a dense urban environment like the Plateau-Mont-Royal.

The chosen system: Sharp Eco Inverter wall-mounted heat pump

We installed a Sharp wall-mounted mini-split heat pump , consisting of:

  • of an indoor wall-mounted head (not visible in the photo) installed in the main room of the dwelling, for uniform air distribution;

  • of a Sharp Eco Inverter outdoor unit (compressor), installed on the flat roof.

Key features of the Sharp system:

  • Eco Inverter technology : the compressor speed continuously adjusts to the actual heating or cooling demand, improving comfort and reducing on/off cycles.

  • Excellent energy efficiency (indicated by the EnergyGuide label affixed to the condenser), allowing the customer to benefit from substantial savings on heating costs.

  • Advanced air filtration , with Sharp's Ion/Plasmacluster technology, which helps reduce airborne dust and certain allergens.

  • Reduced external noise level, ideal in an urban environment where coexistence with neighbors is important.

For this type of unit in a Plateau dwelling, we generally aim for a capacity range of around 12,000 to 18,000 BTU , sufficient for the majority of average-sized apartments, while maintaining good performance at low temperatures.

Installation details visible in the photo

The photo shows several technical elements that demonstrate the quality of the installation:

  1. Outdoor unit on an elevated structure

    • The Sharp condenser is installed on a robust aluminum structure , itself placed on wooden beams with blue supports.

    • This configuration allows:

      • to clear the unit from the roof to prevent snow and ice buildup;

      • to facilitate the drainage of condensation water ;

      • to limit the transfer of vibrations to the roof membrane.

  2. Perfect upgrade

    • A spirit level is placed on top of the condenser to check that it is horizontal.

    • A level unit is essential for proper compressor operation, adequate drainage, and the longevity of the device.

  3. Protection of refrigeration lines and wiring

    • The refrigeration lines, communication cable and power supply are grouped together in a black bundle, neatly routed across the roof.

    • This orderly routing facilitates maintenance, protects the pipes and prevents premature wear.

  4. Compliance with clearances around the condenser

    • The Sharp unit is installed in such a way as to maintain sufficient clearance at the front and sides, which ensures good air circulation and therefore optimal performance.

  5. Protected roof membrane

    • The supports are designed to distribute the load and limit pressure points, in order to preserve the integrity of the white membrane of the flat roof.

Project progress on the Plateau-Mont-Royal

Here's how we carried out this project from start to finish:

1. Technical visit and sizing

We first conducted a tour of the property:

  • taking measurements of the parts;

  • analysis of insulation, orientation and solar gain;

  • verification of roof access and structural constraints.

This step allowed us to properly size the Sharp heat pump and confirm the feasibility of installing the outdoor unit on the roof, respecting the manufacturer's standards and best practices in HVAC.

2. Choosing the location of the wall-mounted head

Inside, the wall-mounted head unit was positioned so that:

  • to distribute air evenly throughout the main living area;

  • avoid blowing directly on the occupants;

  • limit the length of refrigeration pipes up to the roof.

Intelligent positioning of the wall-mounted head increases comfort and overall system performance .

3. Drilling, routing of lines and exit to the roof

Next we have:

  • made a controlled opening in the wall to run the refrigeration lines, the communication cable and the condensation drain;

  • insulated and protected the pipes according to standards;

  • ensuring perfect sealing at the outlets, essential for the durability of the building and energy efficiency.

4. Installation of the Sharp structure and condenser on the roof

On the flat roof:

  • we assembled an elevated aluminum structure with treated wood crossbeams;

  • checked the position using the level (visible in the photo);

  • fixed the Sharp Eco Inverter outdoor unit to the structure, using the anchor points provided by the manufacturer.

The objective: a stable, durable installation that is resistant to winds, snow loads and freeze-thaw cycles of the Montreal climate.

5. Connections, vacuuming and commissioning

Finally, our certified technicians have:

  • carried out the mixing of the copper pipes ;

  • performed a thorough vacuuming to remove moisture and air from the circuit;

  • checked for leaks;

  • proceeded to commission the Sharp heat pump, with verification of pressures, intensity, blowing temperature and proper operation in heating and cooling modes.

We took the time to explain to the client:

  • optimal remote control operation ;

  • the different modes (heating, air conditioning, dehumidification, auto);

  • good usage practices in winter (clearing snow around the unit, etc.).

Results for the client

Thanks to this Sharp wall-mounted heat pump installation in Plateau-Mont-Royal , the client now benefits from:

  • offering consistent comfort in both summer and winter;

  • reduced electricity bills , thanks to the high efficiency of Eco Inverter technology;

  • of a silent system, both inside and outside;

  • of a discreet installation, invisible from the street, because the outdoor unit is on the roof;

  • improved indoor air quality , thanks to advanced Sharp filtration.
