An installation optimized for the comfort of a Montreal duplex
At AirGreen , we regularly work in Montreal plexes where urban density and red brick architecture pose particular challenges. Here, in the Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie neighborhood, we installed a Sharp ZHU1 wall-mounted heat pump alongside an existing Gree system. This project perfectly illustrates how our teams adapt HVAC solutions to the realities of Montreal buildings with ground-floor garages and brick facades.
Sharp ZHU1 Features
The Sharp ZHU1 is one of the recent models using R-32 refrigerant, known for its energy performance and lower environmental impact. Available in several capacities (12,000 to 18,000 BTU in this specific case), it provides:
-
Stable performance even in very cold weather (down to -25°C);
-
High energy efficiency, reducing electricity costs;
-
Compatibility with Quebec subsidy programs (Hydro-Québec, Maisons Plus Vertes, etc.);
-
Quiet operation, ideal for dense urban environments.
Constraints and solutions provided
The installation was carried out on the rear facade of the duplex, above a closed garage . The main constraints were:
-
Working height : the equipment had to be securely fixed more than 2.5 m from the ground;
-
Wall bracket : we have opted for robust galvanized brackets , capable of supporting the vibrations and weight of the unit;
-
Wiring and refrigeration connections : hidden in discreet light-colored capping , running along the brick wall to the interior.
We have taken care to maintain a natural slope for condensate drainage, allowing gravity drainage without the need for a pump, which limits future maintenance and extends the reliability of the system.
Coexistence with an existing installation
A Gree heat pump was already installed nearby. This type of configuration is common in Montreal duplexes, where each unit is equipped separately. We took care to:
-
Respect the minimum clearances between the two units to ensure optimal airflow;
-
Synchronize the pipe runs to maintain a harmonious appearance on the facade;
-
Check that the vibrations and defrost cycles of the two machines do not generate resonance in the masonry.
Benefits for occupants
Thanks to this installation, occupants benefit from:
-
Four-season thermal comfort , without depending on central electric heating;
-
A reduced energy bill , the heat pump covering the majority of heating and air conditioning needs;
-
From a system eligible for financial aid , which accelerates the amortization of the investment;
-
Sound tranquility, since the outdoor units are sized and installed to limit noise pollution.
