Optimized 4-season comfort in a Montreal apartment with complex circulation
At AirGreen , we have just installed a Tosot wall-mounted heat pump in an apartment in Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce . The apartment has a layout typical of buildings in the area: a narrow hallway , a framed passage between the hall and the main room, and a French window opening onto a balcony. The owner's goal is clear: to achieve efficient heating in winter and gentle cooling in summer , without losing space or compromising aesthetics.
The choice of indoor unit: above a passage, without compromising on air
The indoor unit was positioned above the passageway leading to the living room. This height allows:
-
to exploit the natural stratification of the air to recover calories in heating mode;
-
to avoid any obstruction by furniture;
-
to maintain the necessary clearances around the device for maintenance.
Particular care has been taken in the orientation of the oscillation flaps : in air conditioning mode, we direct the flow horizontally then slightly towards the ceiling to promote the Coandă effect and project fresh air deep into the room, despite the presence of the doorframe. In heating mode, the fins descend to sweep the bottom of the volume and improve temperature uniformity.
Brand and series
The solution chosen is a wall-mounted Tosot, Inverter range . This technology automatically varies the compressor speed , which reduces on/off cycles, lowers consumption and reduces perceived noise . Depending on the capacity chosen (9,000 to 12,000 BTU/h in the majority of apartments), the system comfortably covers the main room and the hallway.
AirGreen Site Constraints and Technical Responses
1) Narrow passage, door and moldings
Positioning above the passage requires tight tolerances. We have:
-
checked the lateral clearance for opening the front and removing the filters;
-
controlled the vibration when opening/closing the door;
-
added anti-vibration pads and a metal anchor in a solid rail behind the gypsum.
2) Condensate management
The difference in level between the unit and the outside outlet allowed us to use gravity drainage . The pipe is insulated and has a constant slope (>1%) towards the outside to prevent any backflow. We prevent odors by installing an anti-siphon elbow and sealing the hole.
3) Refrigeration and aesthetic path
The refrigeration lines (insulated copper) and the communication cable take a short route to the exterior wall on the balcony side. Inside, a white cap aligns with the top of the doorframe to remain discreet. Outside, the duct runs vertically down to the condensing unit, capped and fixed every 40–50 cm.
4) Power and protection
The heat pump is powered by a dedicated 240 V circuit , protected at the panel. We systematically carry out:
-
checking the cable gauge and length;
-
grounding ;
-
the installation of a compliant circuit breaker and, where applicable, a disconnection box near the outdoor unit.
5) Vacuuming and sealing
Before commissioning, we carry out a deep vacuum and a nitrogen leak test . This step ensures long-lasting performance and preserves the compressor .
Outdoor unit: quiet and long-lasting, even in winter
The Tosot condenser is installed on the balcony side on galvanized wall brackets with neoprene pads . We comply with:
-
air intake/exhaust vents ;
-
management of defrost water (clearing of the balcony floor and directed flow);
-
the orientation opposite sensitive areas (bedrooms, neighbors).
For the winter period , we remind you of the good practices for using a wall-mounted heat pump :
-
keep the unit clear of snow and frost ;
-
avoid closed fairings which restrict the air;
-
program an automatic defrost mode and do not interrupt it.
Result: measurable comfort and reduced bill
Upon commissioning, the customer notes:
-
rapid reduction of humidity and a uniform feeling of freshness in the main room;
-
stable heating without jolts or overheating on the ceiling;
-
a very low noise level , suitable for apartment living.
Thanks to inverter modulation, the heat pump adapts its power to actual demand. Result: controlled electricity consumption , especially in mid-season when the device operates at low speed for long periods.
AirGreen Tips for Wall Installation Above a Passage
Correctly orient the shutters
-
Summer: shutters slightly upwards, horizontal sweep to push air to the back of the room.
-
Winter: shutters down to keep out the heat .
Preserve maintenance
-
Leave enough space to open the front and remove the filters.
-
Provide a stable stool or safe access during maintenance.
Treat the drain
-
Favor gravity ; if not possible, install a quality condensate pump with silencer and alarm tray.
Limit line length
-
The shorter and straighter the path, the better the performance. A smooth curve and clean bending avoid pressure drops and fluid noise.
Think about the air circulation of the accommodation
-
Keep interior doors ajar to allow airflow to reach adjacent rooms.
-
Supplement, if necessary, with transfer fans or an air exchanger for fresh air.
HVAC Maintenance: The Recipe for Lasting Performance
-
Filters : monthly cleaning during periods of intensive use.
-
Batteries (evaporator/condenser): gentle brushing and neutral product once a year.
-
Condensate : Inspection of pipe and slope before summer.
-
Electricity : Check the tightness of the connections and the UV insulation outside.
-
Updated remote control programming (realistic target temperatures: 22–23°C summer, 20–21°C winter).
AirGreen offers maintenance plans tailored to apartments in Montreal, Laval , Longueuil , North Shore and South Shore , with a detailed report after the visit.

Express Fair: Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Place the unit too close to the ceiling : risk of air recycling and reduced efficiency.
-
Forget the drain odor trap : odors may rise.
-
Refrigeration lines too tight or bent abruptly : noise and pressure loss.
-
Undersized exterior supports : vibrations and noise pollution.
-
Neglect the orientation of the shutters in heating/air conditioning mode.
With AirGreen, each point is checked , documented and validated during commissioning.
