An exterior integration designed to last and for the Montreal climate
In this project, we are installing a Zephyr wall-mounted heat pump to cool and heat the main living areas. The chosen location—high up on the wall, under the roof drain—allows for the required clearances and prevents snow and leaf debris from flying in. We mount the condenser on galvanized brackets with anti-vibration pads , which reduces the transmission of vibrations to the masonry and prevents interior noise pollution.
The refrigeration path exits behind the indoor unit, rises into the wall cavity, and then joins the outdoor unit via the side bay. Outside, the insulated copper lines are gathered into a service loop (section visible in the photo), convenient for maintenance operations and pressure readings. The insulating sheath is UV-resistant and protected at the contact points to prevent abrasion against the brick.
Why a Zephyr mural for a house in Chomedey?
-
Four-season comfort : in air conditioning mode in summer and as supplemental/main heating in mid-season and moderate cold, the heat pump maintains stable comfort with fine control of airflow.
-
Energy efficiency : compared to a window air conditioner or electric convectors, a properly sized heat pump reduces consumption and lowers the electricity bill .
-
Silence : the external fan and inverter compressor limit sudden increases in speed; installation on pads and compliance with clearances under the drain reduce noise reflection.
-
Easy maintenance : Clear access to panels, a service loop , and a comfortable height make seasonal inspections easy.
Key technical details of the installation
Supports and waterproofing
-
Galvanized steel wall brackets , anchored in the brick joints to preserve the facings; level controlled for good oil return from the refrigeration circuit.
-
EPDM pads inserted between the unit and the brackets for vibration decoupling.
-
Wall penetrations protected by sleeve; sealing return inside with vapor barrier to avoid compromising the insulation.
Refrigeration and electrical connections
-
Nitrogen brazed deoxidized copper; continuous insulation with UV-resistant finishing tape on exposed areas.
-
Service loop : it absorbs thermal micro-movements and avoids stress on flare fittings.
-
Nitrogen pressurized , deep vacuum (≤ 500 microns) with strength test; additional charge adjusted if actual length exceeds factory charge.
-
Dedicated power supply with circuit breaker at the main panel; waterproof connection box positioned within easy reach.
Implementation and clearances
-
Rear and side clearance respected for suction/evacuation; blowing directed towards the free zone to avoid recirculation of air under the sewer.
-
Position at a safe height: ground clearance against snow accumulation and mowing, but sufficient distance from the ventilated soffit to preserve attic ventilation.
Drainage and protection
-
The condensate drain from the indoor unit (house side) is gravity- fed with a continuous slope; outside, we plan a controlled drip to avoid marks on the brick.
-
Pre-equipment of a crankcase heating cable if required by the manufacturer for cold peaks.
Sizing and performance: our approach
Before installation, we perform a simplified load calculation : air-conditioned area, facade orientation, quality of insulation (ventilated attic visible under soffit), airtightness of upstairs windows. This diagnosis guides the choice of the Zephyr's BTU capacity and the distribution of the indoor unit's air vents to avoid short cycles and ensure effective dehumidification in summer.
The high mounting and the length of the connections —typically between 6 and 10 m for this configuration—maintain excellent seasonal efficiency (SEER/HSFP according to the AHRI sheet provided to the customer). We provide a commissioning report indicating the stabilized pressures, the blowing temperature and the electrical readings.
AirGreen Safety, Compliance and Quality
-
Compliant circuit breaker and grounding ; compliance with conductor gauge according to the nameplate.
-
Mechanical protection of the cables to eliminate any risk of shearing on the brick edge.
-
Torque tightening of flare fittings, oil-resistant caps, dust caps.
-
Identification of lines (liquid/gas) and power supply for rapid subsequent interventions.
-
Final photos and serial numbers for warranty registration and, if applicable, for applicable grant programs .
Best practices and pitfalls to avoid (AirGreen feedback)
-
Proximity to a ventilated soffit : never stick the condenser under the soffit; the hot exhaust air could enter the attic. We maintain sufficient vertical clearance and direct the flow.
-
Poorly supported refrigeration loop : A loop that is too tight will strain the flares. We provide a generous loop with flexible fasteners and anti-abrasion sleeves.
-
Undersized fixings in the brick: the chosen anchors are adapted to the support and placed in the joint to limit the risk of cracking.
-
Interior drain without slope : we validate the gravity slope and add a mini-pump only if the configuration requires it.
-
Cables exposed to UV : visible sections are sheathed ; bending radii are respected to avoid freeze/thaw fatigue.
Recommended HVAC Maintenance Schedule
-
Spring : gentle cleaning of the external battery, tightening of the fasteners, checking of the buffers and the service loop .
-
Early summer : wash/vacuum the internal filters every 4–6 weeks during heavy use.
-
Fall : drip inspection, check electrical connections, defrost test.
-
Winter : Clear the area in front of the unit in case of blowing snow; avoid piling up ice cubes under the drain.
An AirGreen maintenance plan ensures consistent performance and extends equipment life.
Deadlines, neighborhood and aesthetics
Work on this type of home is generally carried out without heavy scaffolding : a light cradle or roof ladder is sufficient. We warn neighbors when we are working near the lot boundaries and we limit noise (pipe cutters, brazing) to the agreed times. Upon request, we provide a capping in the same color as the cladding to hide visible connections and standardize the facade.
Grants and documentation
For households in Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , the North Shore and the South Shore , certain high-performance wall-mounted heat pumps may be eligible for energy efficiency programs. Our team will assist with preparing the application: AHRI form , proof of installation, photos, detailed invoices and advice to optimize eligibility based on the required BTU capacity and seasonal outputs .
Result: immediate comfort, peace of mind
The Chomedey home now benefits from consistent cooling in the summer and economical heating during the off-season. The installation on anti-vibration brackets and the careful attention paid to the refrigerant connections ensure discreet operation and quick access for each maintenance visit. It's this type of detail—unobtrusive but decisive—that allows an HVAC system to keep its promises for many years to come.
