An interior head positioned above the front door to limit air infiltration and stabilize the temperature of a Montreal plex.
Housing context and objectives
In this typical Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension plex, the entrance opens directly onto the living area. Frequently opening the door let in hot air in summer and cold air in winter, creating areas of discomfort and humidity peaks. The owners wanted four-season comfort, discreet operation, and integration that respected the original aesthetics (moldings, wall sconce, woodwork in the vestibule).
Why we choose a Zephyr wall-mounted heat pump
We installed a Zephyr wall-mounted heat pump for its fine modulation, contained acoustics, and compactness. Inverter technology continuously adjusts the power to maintain the setpoint smoothly; the same machine provides air conditioning and supplemental heating , ideal for Montreal where temperature variations are marked. Filtration improves air quality and limits humidity variations in the vestibule and adjacent room.
Installation above the door: controlled “air curtain” effect
We place the interior head at the top of the frame , a few centimeters from the ceiling. This choice responds to three challenges:
-
create a horizontal airflow along the ceiling to circulate the accumulated heat without blowing directly onto the occupants;
-
reduce infiltration during passages thanks to a controlled air blade effect;
-
preserve circulation in the entrance where wall space is limited.
The level is laser-set; we maintain proper clearances for maintenance and free opening of the shutters. A discreet ceiling cover hides the reservation behind the device for a clean finish.
Refrigeration path and drain management
A single, gently sloping hole passes through the exterior wall. Insulated copper connections, the communication cable, and the drain cord pass through this hole.
-
Gravity drain : the natural slope evacuates condensation without a pump, eliminating noise and additional maintenance.
-
UV capping : on the outside, a white capping aligns the lines to the condenser, while protecting the insulation.
The short path limits pressure losses and refrigerant top-up. Flares are made at controlled torque; we perform a deep vacuum and a leak test before final charging and commissioning.
Condenser location: backyard, silence and maintenance
The condenser is installed in the rear yard on anti-vibration brackets . This solution:
-
keeps noise emissions away from street windows;
-
maintains good air clearance to preserve performance;
-
protects the unit from shocks and facilitates defrosting in winter.
We keep about 300 mm of clearance under the chassis for snow and provide a service passage for cleaning the exchanger.
Power supply and compliance
The equipment features a dedicated panel circuit , an easily accessible external disconnect , and UV-resistant conduit. Grounding, polarity, and voltage drop under load are verified. All operations comply with the Quebec Construction Code and manufacturer's guides.
Commissioning: settings adapted to an entrance
We configure:
-
horizontal sweep so that the flow runs along the ceiling and “breaks” the air column near the door;
-
moderate ventilation in cold mode to dehumidify without drafts;
-
the defrost curve in heating mode for mid-seasons and slightly negative days;
-
the temperature probe to avoid premature shutdowns due to stratification near the ceiling.
A pressure , superheat and subcooling check validates the refrigeration balance. Customers receive our operating instructions and the HVAC maintenance schedule.
Result: immediate comfort and measurable savings
In summer, progressive dehumidification stabilizes the entrance and the adjoining room; the sensation of heat when opening the door drops significantly. In mid-season, the heating mode covers a significant portion of needs, reducing the use of electric baseboard heaters. Modulating operation limits start-ups, and therefore noise and consumption.
Best practices for a head near a front door
-
Keep the temperature stable (23–24°C in summer, 20–21°C in winter in the living area).
-
Avoid obstructing the suction with jackets, frames or shelves.
-
In summer, choose Auto with medium speed; in winter, limit the shutter angle to send the hot air further without recirculating to the ceiling.
-
Clear the condenser area (snow, leaves) and do not install a screen too close which would cause the air to recirculate .
HVAC Maintenance: Simple and Planned
We recommend:
-
annually : cleaning of the internal exchanger, checking of the tray and drain, inspection of the condenser (fins, fan, connections), checking of the electronic parameters;
-
every 4 to 8 weeks during intensive periods: rinsing and drying the filters .
Regular maintenance protects the compressor, maintains seasonal efficiency and keeps indoor air healthy.
Mistakes to avoid in an entry
-
Install too low: risk of direct flow onto occupants and suction of traffic dust.
-
Forgetting the drain slope: water stagnation and odors.
-
Minimize side clearances: difficult maintenance access and increased noise.
-
Leave a gap around the hole: air infiltration and loss of efficiency.
