A necessary intervention to breathe new life into a unit stifled by filth
At AirGreen , we regularly service central heat pumps clogged with dust, pollen, and debris accumulated over months. This week, our team traveled to Saint-Constant , on Montreal's South Shore, to perform a complete cleaning of a heavily obstructed outdoor condenser . The photo above perfectly illustrates the machine's initial condition: the coil fins were covered with a thick gray film, preventing proper airflow and compromising the system's efficiency.
Symptoms observed before our arrival
The client contacted us after noticing:
-
 A noticeable decrease in the efficiency of its heat pump;
-
An unusual fan noise , a sign of increased engine strain;
-
And higher energy consumption on the last electricity bill.
Upon inspection, we found that the condenser coil was almost completely blocked , restricting heat exchange. This type of fouling prevents heat dissipation, causing overheating and premature wear of the components.
Our professional cleaning process
Safe dismantling and preparation
We started by disconnecting the power supply and removing the top protective grille . Then, a preliminary mechanical cleaning removed the leaves, insects and debris stuck between the fins.
Gentle pressure washing of the coil
 Using our controlled water jet washing equipment , we carried out a complete cleaning of the coil . We exclusively use biodegradable and non-corrosive products , specially formulated to dissolve grease and dust without damaging the aluminum.
This step is crucial to restore free air circulation and optimize heat exchange .
Checking the drain and connections
We then inspected the condensation tray drainage , which is often neglected, to prevent any accumulation of stagnant water. Finally, the electrical connections and the fan were checked to ensure everything was functioning correctly.
Result: restored performance and a satisfied customer
After the final rinse and complete drying, the heat pump was restarted. The differences were immediate:
-
Airflow has been restored ;
-
The noise level has decreased ;
-
 And most importantly, the blowing temperature has returned to its optimal values.
Thanks to this cleaning, the unit now operates with increased energy efficiency and a longer lifespan . The customer immediately noticed improved indoor comfort and a reduction in outside noise.
Why regular cleaning is essential
A poorly maintained central heat pump can:
-
Consume up to 25% more energy ;
-
Accumulate mold and bacteria that are harmful to indoor air quality ;
-
And ultimately lead to a costly breakdown .
At AirGreen, we recommend annual professional cleaning of the condenser and internal components. Our team is trained to service all types of HVAC systems—residential or commercial—while adhering to safety standards and manufacturer recommendations.
