A complete overhaul of the outdoor unit of a heat pump
At AirGreen , we recently performed a complete cleaning of the outdoor unit of a central heat pump in a residence in Sainte-Julie , on Montreal's South Shore. The client had noticed a decrease in heating and cooling efficiency , accompanied by unusual noise coming from the outdoor fan. These signs clearly indicated an urgent need for maintenance.
Diagnosis: accumulation of dirt on the blades and fins
Upon our arrival, the outdoor unit showed several signs of fouling:
-
The fan blades were covered with a film of dust and greasy deposits.
-
The condenser fins showed a visible accumulation of dirt and polluting residue .
-
The fan motor showed traces of moisture deposits and slight splashes of mud.
-
The customer had also noticed that the device was running longer than before to reach the same internal temperature.
These symptoms are typical of a lack of seasonal maintenance: a dirty fan reduces heat exchange capacity, forcing the heat pump to work harder.
AirGreen cleaning process
Our team carried out a methodical, step-by-step cleaning to restore the heat pump's performance.
1. Securing and preparing
We first cut off the power supply and cleaned the area around the unit to prevent any cross-contamination.
A biodegradable cleaning product has been prepared for washing the blades and the coil.
2. Washing the fan blades
Using a soft cloth and a low-pressure water jet, the blades were completely degreased and rinsed , removing oily residues that impede airflow.
The central hub was then dried manually to prevent premature oxidation.
3. Condenser cleaning
We applied a mild alkaline cleaner designed specifically for HVAC coils, leaving it to work for a few minutes before rinsing with clean water.
This treatment made it possible to free the fins and restore the full heat exchange capacity .
4. Mechanical verification and performance tests
Once the cleaning is complete, we have:
-
Checked that the fan fixings were tight .
-
Measured the rotation speed and discharge temperature.
-
Checked the refrigerant pressure after restarting.
Everything turned out to be as expected, and the heat pump returned to optimal operation.
Results: restored performance and quiet operation
The final result was more than satisfactory:
-
The noise level of the outdoor unit has decreased significantly.
-
The customer noticed a faster and more consistent improvement in indoor temperature .
-
The device now consumes less energy , proof of improved efficiency.
In addition to cleaning, we recommended an AirGreen seasonal maintenance program to the client, ensuring the system's durability and preventing breakdowns.
The importance of regularly cleaning outdoor units
Although often overlooked, the outdoor unit of a heat pump plays a vital role in the overall performance of the system.
An annual maintenance check performed by a professional allows for:
-
To prevent the compressor from overheating.
-
To extend the lifespan of the fan motor.
-
To improve indoor air quality through cleaner air exchange.
-
To reduce electricity costs.
