Central heat pump cleaning in Terrebonne

An exterior unit neglected by vegetation

At AirGreen , we were recently called to Terrebonne , on Montreal's North Shore , to perform a complete cleaning of a central heat pump located at the rear of a residence. The client had noticed that their unit was becoming noisy and seemed less efficient on hot days, despite recent internal maintenance.

Upon arrival, our team observed that the outdoor unit was partially obscured by vegetation : shrubs were almost touching the protective grille, restricting the airflow necessary for proper heat exchange. Furthermore, the top of the heat pump had a layer of rust , and the condenser fins were clogged with dust and pollen accumulated over the seasons.

Inspection and diagnosis before cleaning

Before proceeding with the washing, we carried out a thorough inspection :

  • Checking the upper fan , whose rotation was slowed by deposits on the blades.

  • Examination of electrical connections and the cut-off box , to ensure the safety of the intervention.

  • Observation of corrosion spots on the upper metal surface, caused by humidity and lack of periodic maintenance.

This analysis allowed us to develop a customized cleaning plan , aimed at restoring the full efficiency of the heat pump without compromising its components.

AirGreen Professional Cleaning Steps

1. Clearance of the perimeter and preparation

The first step was to trim the surrounding shrubs and clear a space of at least 60 cm around the unit. This clearance ensures optimal ventilation and prevents overheating.

We then cut off the power supply and protected sensitive components before proceeding with the cleaning.

2. Gentle rinsing and degreasing of the fins

Using a low-pressure water jet device , we rinsed the exterior of the heat pump to remove debris and dust.
The condenser fins were then cleaned with a biodegradable cleaning product designed to dissolve grease without damaging the metal. This treatment restored the heat exchange surface , which is essential for energy efficiency.

3. Fan cleaning and rust treatment

The upper fan , slightly dirty and oxidized, was disassembled and cleaned using a soft cloth and a mild rust remover.
We then applied a protective layer to slow down corrosion and extend the life of the device.

4. Drain and wiring check

Finally, we inspected the condensation drain and electrical connections . No obstructions were detected, but a slight readjustment of the cables was made to improve safety and appearance.

Results after the intervention

Once the cleaning was complete, we restarted the heat pump and performed performance tests. The results were immediate:

  • Improved airflow and reduced fan noise.

  • More stable blowing temperature .

  • Increased energy efficiency , reducing the operating time required to reach the desired temperature.

The customer was impressed by the difference, both in terms of quiet operation and the comfort felt inside.
