Cleaning an outdoor heat pump in Sainte-Thérèse

A damaged fan and an accumulation of dirt: a typical case in Sainte-Thérèse

At AirGreen , we were recently called in for a complete cleaning of an outdoor heat pump at a residence in Sainte-Thérèse , on Montreal's North Shore. The client contacted us after noticing unusual noise and vibrations coming from their outdoor unit. Upon arrival, an initial visual inspection revealed the cause: one of the fan blades was cracked and unbalanced , compromising the system's efficiency and causing a dangerous long-term imbalance.

This type of problem is common when dirt, dust, and debris accumulate on the ventilation system components. In addition to affecting performance, this can lead to premature motor wear and compressor overheating .

Diagnosis and preparation before cleaning

Before beginning the cleaning, our technicians carried out the following steps:

  • A complete inspection of the turbine and fan housing to assess the severity of the crack;

  • A check of the evaporator and condenser fins , which showed traces of greasy dust and polluting deposits;

  • A check of the electrical connection and the fan motor , to ensure that no anomaly was caused by a prolonged imbalance.

After securing the power supply, we removed the damaged blade and undertook a thorough cleaning of the outer compartment , including the grids and the protective structure.

Cleaning steps applied

The cleaning process took place in several meticulous stages:

  1. Partial dismantling of the protective casing to access the internal areas of the heat pump.

  2. Application of a biodegradable detergent specially formulated for HVAC systems, without chlorine or corrosive agents.

  3. Low pressure rinsing to remove accumulated deposits on the fins and drainage channels.

  4. Manual cleaning of the fan (excluding damaged blades), followed by wiping with an anti-static cloth.

  5. Antibacterial sanitization of the entire compartment to prevent mold growth.

We also replaced the cracked fan blade with a compatible part, following the manufacturer's recommendations to restore the system's balance and performance.

Final result and benefits for the client

At the end of the procedure:

  • The system's noise level has returned to normal;

  • The expelled airflow has regained its initial power;

  • Energy consumption has been reduced thanks to smooth and efficient ventilation;

  • The client noted a significant improvement in interior comfort and thermal stability .

Our technicians emphasized the importance of a complete annual maintenance check to prevent this type of damage. A simple preventative cleaning would have avoided the fan cracking, caused by the imbalance resulting from dirt buildup on the blades.
