Cleaning a wall-mounted heat pump in Pointe-Claire

Balcony intervention to ensure performance and longevity

At AirGreen , we know that maintaining outdoor heat pump units is just as crucial as maintaining indoor units. Recently, our team worked in Pointe-Claire , on the West Island of Montreal , to perform a complete cleaning of the outdoor wall-mounted heat pump for a client living in a condominium.

Before the intervention: an outdoor unit exposed to the elements

Installed on a balcony, the customer's heat pump had suffered the effects of several seasons. Atmospheric dust , pollen residue , and traces of moisture had accumulated on the fins and the structure. This dirt, although barely visible to the naked eye, hinders air circulation and significantly reduces the unit's energy efficiency .

The customer contacted us after noticing that the unit seemed noisier and less efficient on hot days, a sign of partially obstructed heat exchange.

Step 1: Inspecting and securing the workstation

Before any cleaning, our technician performed a complete visual inspection of the heat pump. No signs of refrigerant leaks were detected, but a thin layer of dust covered the rear grille and the heat exchanger fins.

The work area, located on a tiled balcony, was secured to prevent any splashes or falling tools. The power supply was disconnected to ensure safe cleaning in accordance with the manufacturer's standards.

Step 2: Deep cleaning of the fins and housing

The cleaning process involved several successive steps:

  • Gentle vacuuming of the grilles and fins using a fine nozzle to remove surface dust without deforming the aluminum slats.

  • Application of a biodegradable cleaner specially designed for heat exchangers, allowing the dissolution of grease and fine residues.

  • Low-pressure rinsing to avoid mechanical damage while removing contaminants.

  • Cleaning the exterior casing , which is often exposed to rain, particles and salt (especially in urban environments).

  • Wipe and dry completely before putting back into service.

The technician also checked the condition of the condensation drain , which is often neglected, to ensure smooth drainage and prevent any water stagnation.

Step 3: Final checks and performance testing

Once the unit was perfectly clean and dry, powering it back on allowed for a complete functional test.
The results were immediate:

  • Reduction of fan noise .

  • Colder air at the condenser outlet.

  • A more stable operating cycle , a sign of better heat transfer.

The customer noted that the heat pump now reached the desired temperature more quickly and with less effort .

Why regular exterior cleaning is essential

The outdoor units of wall-mounted heat pumps operate year-round, exposed to rain, wind, pollen, and urban pollution . Annual professional cleaning ensures:

  • To optimize energy efficiency and reduce electricity consumption.

  • To protect internal components against corrosion.

  • To avoid overheating caused by obstructed ventilation.

  • To extend the lifespan of the compressor and the ventilation motor.
