A meticulous intervention to restore the efficiency of a residential wall-mounted heat pump
At AirGreen , we were recently called in for a complete cleaning of a wall-mounted heat pump in a Saint-Laurent apartment in Montreal. The client had contacted us after noticing a drop in performance from their system: the heat pump was still producing cool air, but less powerfully than before, and a slight musty odor was emitted when it was turned on.
Initial diagnosis: clogged filters and fins
During our inspection, we noted several signs of accumulated dirt inside the unit :
-
Filters clogged with dust and household fibers, limiting air circulation.
-
The heat exchanger fins were clogged , which reduced the heat exchange capacity.
-
Traces of moisture and brownish residue visible on the lower flap, typical of a prolonged accumulation of dirt.
-
Partially blocked drain , risking water leaks on the wall.
We also measured the blower temperature using an infrared thermometer : it read approximately 7.3°C , a reasonable value but slightly higher than what a well-maintained unit should produce under the same conditions. This confirmed the need for thorough cleaning .
Steps for cleaning a wall-mounted heat pump
Our team carried out a complete maintenance check, following the manufacturer's recommendations and AirGreen best practices:
-
Safe dismantling of the front panel and filters
The filters were carefully removed and then washed in warm water with an eco-friendly detergent. We prioritize biodegradable products to protect the health of the occupants and the environment. -
Deep cleaning of the evaporator and fan
Using a low-pressure jet and a specific HVAC heat exchanger cleaner, we removed dust, grease, and the beginnings of mold. The fan blades, often neglected, were rinsed and disinfected. -
Antibacterial disinfection and deodorization
A disinfectant treatment was applied to all internal surfaces to eliminate bacteria and fungal spores , while also neutralizing bad odors. -
Condensation drain check
After a thorough rinsing, we tested the water flow to ensure the pipe was completely clear , thus preventing any future leaks. -
Reassembly and final performance test
Once the system was reassembled, we resumed measuring the air outlet temperature: it had dropped to 4.9 °C , a sign of restored thermal performance and improved energy efficiency .
Results: purified air and restored comfort
After the procedure, the client immediately noticed a marked improvement:
-
The outgoing air was colder and better distributed .
-
The musty smells had disappeared.
-
The noise level of the unit had decreased, thanks to the removal of dust from the fan.
-
The overall energy efficiency of the system has been optimized, which will help to reduce electricity consumption .
The importance of regular cleaning
A wall-mounted heat pump, like any HVAC system, inevitably accumulates dust, spores, and microorganisms over the seasons. Without regular maintenance, this leads to:
-
A decrease in heating and air conditioning performance ;
-
An increase in energy consumption ;
-
A deterioration in indoor air quality .
At AirGreen, we recommend annual professional cleaning , ideally before the summer season, to prolong the life of the device and ensure optimal comfort throughout the year.
